Explain to me why this is really any more dangerous than typical flu strains? There has been absolutely _NO_ evidence to the contrary. Any disease has the potential to become a problem, this is not special at all. Standard Avian Flu had far greater potential to be the destroyer of worlds.

This is true, the current "avian" flu that's limited right now geographically is much much more deadly than the current H1N1 swine flu.

While this is a bad flu bug, it's nowhere near the 1918 strain and the conditions surrounding this strain are completely different, which the dude in the video fails to take into account. It's important not to underestimate the flu but when the dude in the video suggests that the current flu will reinfect 5 people per case when all the data shows 1.3 new infections per case he's crying wolf and overreacting. He's comparing everything to spanish flu, which is a huge leap at this point and just not in line with the data as of yet.

Stay prepared, keep an eye on the southern hemisphere, wash your hands, but seriously civilization isn't going to grind to a halt. *If* the virus mutates rapidly then the game changes, but that's the case with ANY new flu virus.

I'm willing to bet a fair amount of people on this board were alive during the last pandemic, in which the government made a vaccine but after 30 hospitalizations due to the vaccine people were more worried about the vaccine than the flu.

So the guy who had problem with gout has died. There seemed to had been a 2 week cooling down in the number of cases in NY, but suddenly another cluster appears, and 1 person dies out of it in NY, who didn't have any respiratory problems (only previously known to have gout). Could this mean that the second wave is already starting (new mutation).

This assistant principal guy seemed to be a good guy really, loved by his family (son and wife), and the kids at his school/ faculty liked him too.

H1N1 FLU EYED IN ARKANSAS MAN'S DEATH

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Pulaski County's coroner said investigators are probing whether a 28-year-old offshore oil worker's death may have been caused by the H1N1 flu.

Coroner Garland Camper told The Associated Press that the man died Saturday morning at a Little Rock hospital after suffering from flu-like symptoms for six weeks. Camper said samples taken from the man tested positive for several strains of flu, requiring his office to explore the possibility H1N1 flu played a part in the death.

Dr. James Phillips, the state's epidemiologist, said the man's case would be incredibly unusual for the H1N1 flu. However, Phillips said the samples will be sent along to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta for testing.

Camper declined to identify the man. The man's body will undergo an autopsy on Monday.

Arkansas has had six confirmed cases of H1N1 flu since the outbreak began.

Do you realize we will sink deeper into a perpetual global financial crisis if this flu isn't stopped. Right now there's no way to contain this flu, but there are ways to mitigate it. The government has done a good job in informing people about ways to keep clean and all, but they haven't even began to make the vaccine yet.

All they've been doing is gathering the eggs/other materials required to make the seed strain, and they've isolated the strain of the virus, as preparation. Making the vaccine should have begun like 2 weeks ago, but they're still deciding if it's wise to spend money on making the vaccine, or if they should watch the "Southern Hemisphere a little bit first." Their flu season already started couple weeks ago, and peaks in July.

The vaccine can take 4-6 months to make with the technology we have today, because we produce "egg-based vaccines, rather than cell based ones." Tomorrow, they're doing the autopsy on the Arkansas man that I mentioned above, because his case seems to be the most interesting case so far, could be multiple flu's that killed him at once if he was "sick with flu-like symptoms for 6 weeks."

I mean the CDC has already said that the cytokine storm you initially proposed was probably not a cytokine storm and now you're proposing a new mutation already? There is literally zero evidence to support this. If you go by the books, right now this is a "mild" strain, and that is all that can be said *right now*.

Honestly, the worst thing that could happen right now is if people continue to say stuff like "Our islands are doomed if H1N1 reaches here" and cry wolf so that between seasons the public loses interest and a healthy fear of the flu. Or, worse, everyone freaks out and goes to the hospital when their cat sneezes. When the next serious flu epidemic/pandemic arises, and if this epidemic becomes a serious pandemic, we need people to be aware and conscious about the risks involved so they *don't* immediately think of the 2009 swine flu "pandemic" as the worst that could happen and they laughingly take their vacation in mexico regardless of the risks.

We are between seasons right now in the northern hemisphere, we should be prepared with a vaccine and watch the southern hemisphere. Right now, this is a mild flu strain that has traveled far and that is it. *IF* it mutates, and *IF* the mutation spreads rapidly and kills more effectively, then we will obviously restrict travel and deal with it as the need arises. This may not happen for a long time. The flu surveillance system we have in place is very very good and extremely modern with respect to past epidemics, but still underfunded. That being said this is something we are getting a very very good handle on. ALL flu strains are SERIOUS and carry a risk of DEATH. At this point noone is overlooking this epidemic and the CDC, WHO, and yes even private scientists are doing their best to keep track of it.

the best resource available for lay audiences is the following blog, Effect Measure which is a collaboration with people who actually work in the public health sector from different disciplines, they have lots of free open access articles for you to fret over, CNN and youtube should not be primary resources.
