I think the piece that won definitely deserved first place. Some of the other pieces are... Questionable.
My favorite was Monsters of Vanadiel for sure.
The background is a lot of fun, though - if you know all the NPCs there's a lot of commentary on their personalities in the poses and order. I'd like to see that at a higher resolution with no goofy middle drawing.
I was sorry not to see anything from Skyblue Seed
(spoilers in some of the art)Spoiler: show
Which reminds me to ask Otak if there are any copies of the latest fanbook left for order.![]()

I dont know if these judges have ever played this game before. "An epic battle resulting in victory jubilantly claimed by seven valiant warriors of the Goddess... Imbued with striking significance, this work of art truly embodies the contest's 7th Anniversary theme in style. The only thing is, a party is supposed to have no more than six...oh, we get it now!"
First, Corsairs arent Treasure Hunters. Second, that is a party of six: PLD COR SAM DNC MNK SMN...Shiva isnt a party member.
Worked until it didn't.

Other artists we didn't see this year but should have:

I feel some of those "artists we should have seen" aren't very original, especially Skyblue Seed. They just look like anime box/poster/cover-art with some hair/clothes switched to match FFXI characters. Seen it once, seen it a million times. Then the other pieces look like the artist stopped after the conceptual stage and didn't finish them, this kind of thing is what any developers see on a daily basis as their artists sketch up zones/characters/items concepts.
Shit like the Goobbue and the cupcake deserve to win, they take an artistic approach that we don't see every day on our nerd forums.

I wish artist's would draw more scene's of people in town. I personally have always loved the atmosphere of places like Jueno.
This was an entry a LS member of mine submitted:
Spoiler: show
She just recently got BLM to 75 and got to meet Fafnir for the first time. =P Unfortunately, I don't think hers really screams 7th anniversary.
Honestly, I think it's because of it's layout and lack of a "central focus" that makes "7th Anniversary!" as good as it is. Taking a "less-is-more" approach while allowing the eye to wander over the image as a whole and take in the entire scene. Each figure can stand out on their own as being full of personality and life without the need for for a single focal point to anchor everything in. It's got this "snapshot of life" vibe to it that freezes a specific and informal moment of time, where the story being told is fairly clear and simplistic. Where as the one you linked to, while attempting to use the Whm as a focal point doesn't accomplish that task because it's the Sam who draws the most attention (for me at least). Combined with the fact that it's obvious many of them are looking directly at the "camera", so-to-speak, and it just doesn't give off the same feel as the Mythril Place winner. While having similar concepts, the way each image pulls it off is just completely different.
And this isn't even taking into account technical skills, style, finishing, detailing and such, because as seen by previous winning entries, that's not always that important. Both images were done by great artists however and I wish I had both the talent and the motivation to create images like those.
No way they could have traced all of those in the poses and positioning they're in, are ones they that never look like that ingame, like the orc standing on top of the turret, or Sandworm Sucking "his" mobs lol. Plenty of other examples if you look at the depth of it.
Oh snap, Girl Power got axed for some reason, what requirement didn't it fill?
