What lesson is to be learnt from this? To never speak up ever? To be one of the quiet, unthinking masses?

The lesson to be learnt is how adults can over-react in situations due to stress and how to deal with it when they do. Also, the lesson can show him/her what to do if ever found in a similar situation.

I taught kids in South Korea for three years. There is no more stressful teaching environment than teaching English in South Korea to teenagers who hate you just because you're a foreigner and because they don't give a shit about learning English. There's still no reason to go ape when you're stressed out.

Dumb response by the teacher is a dumb response. This person is handling it pretty well, and it would be interesting to see what happens if he took it further.

Go for the law suit, civil or not, kids can sue their parent's for getting put on punishment, i'd do it just to see would/could come of it. And this isn't anywhere remotely close to the 'fire in a movie theatre' subject. DO IT use you're american rights to fight the man!

Just enjoy your vacation and leave it be. Teacher was probably having a shitty day, or maybe he viewed it as you were making fun of the kid who coughed. I never understood out of school suspensions, I always enjoyed them. In school suspension was always a worse punishment for me.

I'd just like to say there's absolutely nothing wrong with a 19 year old (almost 20 in this case) graduating from high school. Better late than never.

That was directed to the person who made the comment about you graduating 'late' not at you.

If I were you I'd be more upset about this.

The lesson learned here is that there are times when it's ok to say certain things, and there are times when it is not. Some people are scared of swine flu (whether it be legitimate or not, leave that to the swine flu thread), and swine flu also has some racial stigma attached to it as well. In a public environment you should always be careful about what you say, and if you aren't be prepared to face the consequences.

Additionally, the OP is not "handling this well". He went crying to an internet forum essentially saying "BAAWWWWW things didn't go my way, I'm going to sue".

Sorry but its total PC bullshit from the same sort of people who cry on and on about their so called right to free speech. A teacher is paid to do a job, just like anyone else, students are essentially his customers. Now if i went off on a client for silly bullshit like this i wouldnt be in business very long. Maybe if the stress is too much for him he may find stacking shelves more appealing.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Only racial if you call it Mexican flu! Calling it swine flu is... antisemitism? ;o

Yeah this pretty much. You started out ok "Lol guys this happened to me, what do you think?" But then saying you'll sue, yeah, overreact much? You know you won't sue, at best you'll go talk to the principal to ask what is up, he'll tell you and that's that.

Still bullshit to be suspended, but it's nothing that you can't easily deal with.

If you start with suspending students for saying 'swine flu' in class, what comes next? What happens if it becomes inappropriate to say you don't like a certain type of food, or colour, or if your favourite number is 5? First comes making a joke about 'swine flu' then comes having an opinion on anything at all.

It's dumb to argue if the guy should take his punishment because the fact that saying 'swine flu' is a 'crime' is idiotic to begin with. Who and what the fellow is are not important, just the fact that anyone got suspended for something idiotic like this is, well, idiotic. Separate the action from the individual. As someone else said, it's PCism out of control.

    Whole thread is dumb!

If I remember correctly, schools are allowed to withhold some of your rights. I remember some teacher explaining this, but I'm not sure. I think it has something to do with the fact that they're responsible for you as long as your in school hours.

Anyone know anything about this? whether it's true or not.

I really really hope you pretend your language is only "Swinefluese" when you return to school.

Fuck your teachers, that's pretty ridiculous. Be like the Swineflu pokemon when you get back, only able to say your own name.

Sounds like your teacher missed his calling as a cop. IE: Egomaniacal douchebag on a powertrip who was picked on 10 too many times in High School and seeks retribution on harmless students.

AGREED! In addition to this, homosexuals shouldn't marry because by allowing the same sex to marry, what's next? Bears and humans, flamingos and deer, ELEPHANTS and CATS?!

Slippery slope argument is dumb. srsly

This is the best line in this thread.

@OP. Take it to the principal/admin yourself. Demand it stricken. Not that a suspension means shit anyway.

Teacher immediately starts screaming at me to get the hell out of his class.
Never had any issues with the teacher, no reason for him to even try to attack me.

Also lol at suing too, but I remember my Civil Law teacher had actually said that it's a breach of my first amendment rights to not allow me to say swine flu.
I still don't get the feeling we're getting the whole story- like I have a suspicion that the class was rowdy that day and this was the last straw- like you were suspended for saying something loudly and disrupting class rather than "OMG HE SAID A DISEASE NAME!". I don't know where your school is but they shut down several schools in maryland for days/up to a week because of confirmed/suspected cases so it IS something they are supposed to take fairly seriously. But whatever, not really what I intended to comment on.

Your civil rights are not really being violated here. Regardless of what you said, at that time you weren't supposed to be saying *anything* because shouting out purple monkey dishwasher would have been equally disruptive. Furthermore, considering the substantial public awareness of the swine flu, you could have incited panic (yea I know, unlikely but whatever). Your first amendment rights state that congress shall make no law prohibiting your free speech. It does not say you can't be kicked out of class for being a loudmouth. You also can't shout fire in a crowded theater. THere are limitations to free speech.

Learn the right lesson here: keep your mouth shut in class and make your jokes on your own time.

I think it's stupid to be suspended for saying Swine Flu in class, but seriously - think about it. The teacher's responsibility is to maintain order in the classroom. You may not be terrified of swine flu, and your teacher may not be terrified either, but what if the rest of the class is? You could cause a panic even if you're joking around.

After walking away from this situation, you need to learn when to joke around and when not to. You would have gotten a similar response if you were huddled under a desk during the missile crisis going "lol nukes". You just don't do it.
