Title sums it up really. Do you know anyone that does? Also, is it as frowned upon as buying gil in FFXI?

Yeah it's as frowned upon, and even more pointless. I briefly considered trading FFXI gil from my dormant account for WoW gold, but it's so easy to make gold in WoW at 80, it struck me as a waste of time.
Why would you need to buy gil in WoW? The game can't get any easier than WoW.
If it's your first character you will be tempted I'm sure, but if you level dual gathering professions (herb/skinning) you'll never hurt for gold, ever. Buying gold is completely pointless. Doubly so on a PvE server where farming is effortless.
Buying gold in this game is the dumbest thing I swear anyone can do. Either it buys you an item that will be replaced within a few weeks (either because you're leveling up or because you find something better in a raid) or you're more or less accelerating a given process such as a tradeskill from taking a week (at worst) down to taking 1-2 days. The time it saves you is laughable and you receive no tactical advantages for it, so why anyone does it is beyond me.
If I have time when I see people begging for money in Org, I tell them I know someone who will give them plenty of money and I'll be happy to show them where he is...then I walk them to their nearest quest hub and point out the quest npcs >_>
Best thing to do is open the trade window like your going to give them money, put in 20000g then go afk for 30 minutes. You get some cracking whispers from doing that.
lol yeah I've done that too, I try to be at least semi-empowering to them rather than just jerking them around unless they keep begging repeatedly (especially if its in tell).
I've had people in the barrens even just open trade windows up without even talking first...I close them and literally have been responded to with WTF GOLD PLZ!!
Some people.
There's really no need anymore. I mean, there wasn't really much point to it back in the day but at least then you could, say, power level Engineering for the goggles for a boost back into end game. In WotLK, heroics are doable the day you hit 80, each one gives a decent epic, decent blues and lots of badges. The first tier of content is embarrassingly easy (I've killed Sartharion 25 with 11 alts) and you could quite comfortably step into them the day after you hit 80. Consumables are stream lined to the point where their cost is minuscule.
If you're talking about buying gold to help level up or buy a mount or something, there's still no point. Take Herbalism or Mining with Skinning and sell ALL your drops rationally and you'll have enough money to buy what you need.
Yeah with dual gathering profs you will do fine. I spent a few days getting my Mining/Herb to 350ish for Northrend before going there at about 70. By the 3rd day I had made close to 5k gold just from leveling the two of them together in zone where there were herbs and ores. By the time I was 77 I had over 8k gold and easily got my epic flyer and then had about 5k gold by the time I was 80 and was able to buy some nice BoE to get started. After that gold is pretty much a luxury, there is no real use for it beyond speeding up an already fairly fast process.
First character = start gathering professions
2nd = level other stuff (not eng or jc)
like.. skinning -> LW
or mining -> BS
herbalism -> alchemy
you make so... much.. insane amount of money in wow its ridiculous.
I pretty much only raid, and farm to make "stuff" for raiding, I don't even spend time really doing dailies except for professions and I've got 7 epic flying mounts + eng bikes ...
Buying gold in FF is understandable because of the bad game design, buying gold in WoW is just a "huh?" kind of thing because the game isn't designed around money.
I guess if you're that impatient casual player who really needs all those BiS items from AH, but if you aren't raiding to get them, what are you doing it for ? Standing in dala in pve gear? meh.
Yeah, along the lines of what everyone said here. It's really dumb. No item in the game is terribly expensive, and most of the time there are BoE items that are better than you can obtain in raids. While leveling, you can easily go 1-80 without ever visiting the AH (much unlike FF, which expects you to have certain buyable gear every level) as the quest rewards and random drops are sufficient.
One day I was bored and decided to go out and do some quests in a zone I hadn't been to while leveling. I made about 2000g in a few hours, without any rare/world drops or anything like that. Why anyone would ever buy gold for WoW is beyond me. In time it takes you to buy gold and get it delivered you could easily double what you get.
idk. this is my "first character." On this server anyways and I'm doing engineering and it hasn't been too bad so far. I know it's not going to make money, but I want rocket boots
Impossibly stupid. Makes me wonder why theres so many gold selling spam in trade and my whispers. Just that many retards i guess. In 2 weeks i had made 16k gold just having mining/herbalism. My guild is completely blown away by it. Suddenly i'm the "rich guy". I dunno, maybe the masochistic way i had to survive in FFXI for years gave me more patience, but it was way easy. I can't understand why anyone would need to buy gold.
I thought it was shitty in FFXI, though I can certainly see its appeal, considering how FFXI is set up. However, it's completely mind-blowing that anyone would ever feel the need to in WoW. Gold is the easiest shit to come up with, ever - even with a casual gaming schedule and just one gathering profession (I did skinning + leatherworking off the bat) I still made my first 1000 gold before level 30, and continued to profit while staying geared all the way to 80.
the only thing gold is for is repair and flasks, thats about it. and mount training
People buying gold before TBC was laughable to me, considering I moved to WoW from the hellhole of FFXI economy in 2003-05. The game back then was a vacation compared to FFXI moneymaking etc.
If you buy gold now though, with all these dailies and high gold amounts coming from instances/quests/etc, then you clearly should go back to a harder game to open your eyes at how fucking faceroll moneymaking is in WoW. Seriously, anyone who buys gold in this game sucks ass. They hand you loads of gold with about almost everything you do ingame. And if you're not 80, then you're really not in need of any gold. Just get 80 and gold will fly into your mailbox every time you log in.
Blizz is working on destroying JC... wonder whats next!
Buying gold is bad, that's why I sell it.
Word.
