i thought it was just how the images were actually taken that to some extent highlighted the different gases because of how they reflect light at different wavelengths, i mean not quite that highlighted but the paler pictures i thought that's why anyway

When they write vertically it's top-to-bottom, right-to-left. But when they write horizontally it's left-to-right.
