I love the argument from people about not giving money to homeless people, because they will spend it on booze. Like people with houses don't spend their money on booze. Give me a break. If you had no money and no job, and you lived on the street or in a shelter, you'd spend the fucking money on drank, too.

Some people are lucky enough to be born with middle class families who will take them in when they're down on their luck. Some aren't. Some people don't have support circles to fall back on. If those people don't deserve a goddamn drink, who does?

The difference is people with homes work to get their drink on. As a side note, I remember in high school we'd get a bum to buy us a case of St. Ides Tropical from the liquor store in return for one or two quarts from the case.

One guy pulled a razor on us when we gave him the money and said he's keeping it and we just started laughing at him and said good one and how funny he is, he played along and laughed and got us our case anyways.

On a related note, I don't think I've ever seen a homeless asian.

Living in the ATL there are literally homeless people on every corner. you get pretty used to it after awhile. i actually find it weird when i'm on vacation and there aren't homeless people around. overall they really aren't bad, they actually aren't lazy, most just have mental disorders and can't hold a job down in our society. That's why you see a lot of vets because they have post traumatic stress disorder. so they won't rob you, they are just crazy and probably intoxicated. i never give them money, but i give them fast food sometimes. They are pretty cool to hang out with sometimes, talking to a crazy person is always fun.

On my way to class there was always this one guy who I would see, eventually I ended up buying him lunch every once in a while once I got out of class. Really nice guy just going through hard times.

I donate to the poor through organizations, but I've never directly given a homeless guy money.

Once in downtown LA there was this guy like helping people park, telling them how far they can back up and such, maybe he was homeless... maybe he wasn't. I gave him a couple bucks.

Nah that's just the old korean ladies, they usually live in your neighborhood or whereabouts. They ain't homeless, just bored, resourceful, and woke up early.

There's a homeless guy in Raleigh named Chester, dude is a fucking riot, has some awesome stories. He'll help you out for a bit of cash too, a lot of times he'll go around and help sweep up and take the trash out at bars for a little bit of money.

Always has a huge grin on his face, and if you give him $5 he'll prophesy for you, although he always tells you how great your life is going to be, never has any bad news.

Every social worker I've talked to has said you shouldn't give them stuff because it causes the ones who have real problems that are causing them to be on the streets to not go to shelters where they will get treatment/help because they see no point in doing so if they can get adequate food/cash panhandling.

That's not actually the argument I primarily hear. The real argument is "if I give them money, the'll be back tomorrow for more. With friends."

There is a point because they often need psychological help or treatment for any addiction they may have.

On the serious side, I always give money for some reason. Even when I'm 80% sure the person isn't even homeless I still give em an A for effort.

I had a friend who helped a homeless guy by giving him new clothes and setting him up with a job interview. The guy blew him off and never went to the interview.
