I work in an mini NYC (White Plains) and during Christmas about 20 different people must have come up and given me sob story about how they needed to get money so they could buy their kids gifts. What the fuck? Don't panhandle me on my lunch hour while I'm trying to get my shit done.

Do I feel bad? Not a bit.

On a related note, I don't think I've ever seen a homeless asian.

we had one who we had to get banned from the property/call the police because he kept digging through all the outdoor trashcans in the shopping center daily even after being told to stop.

Funny you mentioned asians. My Asian friend said that once while we were on a drive and not five minutes later we passed one. I've never seen a homeless eskimo.

I live in the middle of St Louis and wake up to bums in front of my house all the time. I never give them money because they won't leave if i do.

There's this crazy looking African American thing that calls itself the "Black Barbie" and gets mugged for 50 cents every morning and needs 50 cents from you or me to catch the bus home. You'd think if you were going to prowl around the same street every day you would come up with a different story occasionally.

Every time I go to downtown Seattle, some black guy helps me park. I'll find a spot, and since you have to parallel park everywhere and its hard to see sometimes, he just stands there and waves you into the spot or tells you when to stop. I don't get a choice, if there's a guy there, he'll always help. And then I have to tip him. I give him a dollar since I'm easily guilt tripped, but I don't cave in when he asks for more.

It's pretty clever, too, because you can't really tell him you don't need his help unless you roll down your window and yell "Get out of my way hobo, I don't need your help!" which I'm not about to do.

I'd say it's evenly balanced among the races from what I see here.

The white homeless are usually dressed in camo and they have been selling giant pixie sticks right off the highway.

Bosnian homeless hide behind fast food intercom signs.

Black homeless hunt the grocery store.

Haven't seen any other races of homeless in St Louis...

The homeless here usually ask for chicken or a quarter. I had this one lady tell me I was gonna see her in my dreams because I didn't give her anything.

I have no source links but I know I've read a story about a dude who makes upper5/lower6 figure salary and would go out on the weekend in ratty clothes and come home with like hundreds of dollars, just from standing on a corner with a sign


And that is pretty much why I never give money directly to beggars. I'll offer to buy them something though, especially if we're right nearby a restaurant or such. I also rarely if ever donate to the salvation army santas and stuff, for two reasons: easily mugged, and not easily tracked/reported as donations. Any charitable contributions I make are by check or CC for recordkeeping and so I know my money at least made it into the hands of the intended organization.

A 55-ish year old dude who looked homeless (leathery sunburned face, scraggly) but in otherwise good health approached me at the ATM at an upscale shopping center a couple days ago.

He said, rather aggressively, "Do you have any money to help a Vietnam vet get some food?"

I don't really give money to beggars, so I said my usual "No, I'm sorry."

The guy immediately snapped back "FUCK YOU and I HOPE YOU DIE!" and stormed away.

First time for everything.

There's a crazy bag man that goes through people's trash cans to dump your garbage and steal the bags, a Jamaican crackhead that makes voodoo dolls out of old socks, a ghetto sage that tells stories for change by the corner store, and an old lady that used to wear a heavy coat year round. The old woman died about a year ago and they found ~$70,000 lined in her coat.

I used to give homeless folks money every now and then, but can't remember the last time I did in the past year.

This one time, I was outside a McDonald's waiting for the bus and this homeless white dude (supposedly 'nam vet) tried to sell me a cell phone for 70 cents. I refused. A black homeless guy had just walked out with his meal in a bag and the white guy got up, arms flailing in his face saying, "nigger get the fuck out of my sight." They exchanged some angry words and eventually some blows. The white guy gets layed the fuck out with a blow to his forehead. He fell backwards onto the bike rack behind him, and it missed his neck by an inch. Ambulance was called, but the white guy had regained conciousness and walked off.
