I will rarely if ever give money to panhandlers. If I do give them something, it is actual food.

I'll never forget one time I was out and about with my grandma and cousins during Christmas-time (Background: We were doing a charity thing where we would visit families and give them gifts with one of us dressed as Santa, and we also had bags of fruit as well to give to the families). So we had a bunch of extra fruit left, decided to go drive around and hand some out to homeless folk. That little endeavor became interesting when I gave one guy a bag of fruit, he was all happy, opened the bag, got pissed off, and threw the fruit back at our van while cursing at us.

I have no idea what the hell he thought I gave him or much of what he said as I was laughing way too damned hard.

Here in Portland, OR all the homeless are white kids in their 20s. There are A TON of them, too. 2-3 on each corner of a city block that has a grocery store. You can't enter or exit a Whole Foods, Safeway, Fred Meyer, or Trader Joes without 2-3 homeless kids staring at you with their lame signs or them asking you for money.

I straight up ignore them, never make eye contact, and pretend they don't exist. Thank god for iPods, because it gives me a reason to act like I don't know they exist.

Sometimes they'll get so pissed off if you ignore them or tell them no. Its scary how violent they can be. I think they should be trucked out to the wilderness where they can pick berries and shit or something.

The real kicker is that most of these homeless (in Portland, OR) are homeless by choice and have wealthy families. They become homeless because they're just so "against" America capitalism and consumerism.

The fact is that most of them can call up their family and get picked up in a Mercedes or BMW and taken out to a steak dinner.

I always give the same answer when approached, "Sorry, I don't have any change on me." It always works, but I'm waiting for one to reply with, "Well, do you have any bills?"

If they did that, I might just peel them off a couple.

Obviously wealthy people pretending to be poor isn't the norm and no one said they think every beggar is rich so everyone can stop with the retarded comments about it. But a professional beggar can make tons of fucking money depending on where they live and how good they are. I actually remember seeing a show about this on television and the guy they were interviewing was banking nearly 60k a year. If I was making a lot of money begging I would keep it at too, why not, who gives a fuck what people think. I'm also gonna bet its a psychological problem with a lot of beggars too, begging is almost an addiction to some of them. The only time I gave a beggar money was because he was with his elderly dad, it was just after Christmas, and it was raining.

A friend of mine who just moved out of washington state tells me of a lake where such youngsters with a particularly vile mean streak will dump their used needles directly into the water. It's like they want you to have hepatitis. I'm guessing sociopathy runs strong in a lot of these young bums and the drugs just makes it worse.

A 55-ish year old dude who looked homeless (leathery sunburned face, scraggly) but in otherwise good health approached me at the ATM at an upscale shopping center a couple days ago.

He said, rather aggressively, "Do you have any money to help a Vietnam vet get some food?"

I don't really give money to beggars, so I said my usual "No, I'm sorry."

The guy immediately snapped back "FUCK YOU and I HOPE YOU DIE!" and stormed away.

First time for everything.

The same thing happened to me outside of Fred Meyers in Alaska. He didnt say "Fuck you and I hope you die" but he gave me a nasty look and said whatever. I had a 3yr old in a shopping cart full of food and 7 months pregnant so I wasnt in the mood to deal with him lol. After he walked away a lady drove up and asked if I gave him money. After I told her no she told me good because he just asked her as well.

In Pioneer Square, Seattle, WA, I had a homeless guy ask me for change and I said no. Then he asked me for a cig, and I was like fine here have a cig leave me alone. He took the cig and then started chewing me out.

Shouted at me that I would help him kill himself (via cigarette), rather than help him feed himself.

I was a little shocked at that point and speechless, so I just told him to fuck off and kept walking.

It makes me think he could have been a graduate student doing research on how people treat poor people or something. Fucking sociology majors... and fucking deros. Ugh.

Yup. This is my experience in Portland, OR. Walk through downtown there are homeless people everywhere. In early morning there is this church where almost every inch around it is filled with homeless people sleeping. Closer you get to Burnside (main road going through town), the more actual panhandlers you see. I wonder if other cities have such a large problem. Guess that's what you get when you close down the state mental institutions to save a few bucks.

Edit: I missed Vuitton's post apparently ^^. He covered a lot of Portland problems. I worked in a convenience store in downtown for a while and you rub shoulders with all kinds. Street kids are quite a problem. They smell like shit and try to pay in all pennies. I wouldnt say they are rich or anything, though perhaps they come from money somewhere. The High School I went to was also in downtown and many of the kids there were in drugs as well. Guess they have to end up someplace eventually.

Overall, Porland is real white-bread, so perhaps people in the NE see a different racial split in their homeless. Also, lol at AoE's picture. In many ways it is true. As much as I respect asceticism, I would like to see better hygiene. Kinda reminds me of Dylan's Like a Rollin' Stone.

Just wanted to post here my favorite home town hobo. Henry Earl, also known as James Brown, mostly because of his dancing(which is amazingly good, and even better if you buy him beer). This guy was on the jimmy kimmel show, has over 1000 public intoxication arrests and is extremely entertaining. If there was a "whos got talent" for homeless people, hed be all over it, grand champ.

i saw a chick begging for money at an intersection at a canadian tire/sobey's parking lot entrance. it's a very long red light for people trying to get onto the main street leading out.

she had a sign that said "disability check coming, need gas/money to feed kids"

I don't give money to any of them.

The only time I think I've given anyone anything was when I was visiting some friends in San Fransisco. We were eating at some Mexican place and a lady came in and asked us if we had any leftovers, we ended up buying her a quesadilla or something.

On a related note: I used to work in a big box store. Was a cashier, pushed cards, did pretty much whatever was needed. Was going into work one day and in the parking lot some dude walked up to me, had this long story about how his wife was pregnant and his car was out of gas and he needed a few bucks to get home. I told him I didn't have any cash on me, but some other people leaving the store gave him a five. An hour later I go out to push carts, and he's still there asking for money, and I watched 3 more people give him some cash before I told the cop in the store.

I was leaving the mall Tuesday and the same guy came up to me with the same story ("my car ran out of gas can you spare me a couple bucks to get home?"). I quit the job over a year ago.

I remember when I was 17 this guy who must have been 25 asked me for some money for food. We both knew full well that food wasn't even near the top of his shit to buy list so I sat down and rolled a spliff with him. While I smoked the first half we chatted about how he ended up the way he was and shit, then I gave him 2s and went happily on his way. The bloke seemed happy just to be treated like an actual human being for a change.

Pretty much every begger where I'm from is white apart from this one black guy called Crazy Ricky who's just... well completely fucking nuts. Bounce's around town pestering people for money fucking constantly drinking Red Stripe and shouting in Jamacian.

My mom taught me young not to give money to beggars because they will spend it on something they shouldn't such as drugs. Instead she usually just walked them to a corner store and bought them a roll or something, worth the dollar you would have given them anyway. I follow this idea to a tee, I won't give money to a stranger if I'm feeling generous I simply provide for them in a different way.

We have this one corner on my home where every other homeless guy alternates every hour. Its one of those intersections where the streets are some what narrow so it puts the homeless right up close to your car while you wait. I used to give them whatever change I had in my truck up until I saw the fuckers pressing the crosswalk button every time the signals changed. Ugh shit sent me over the edge.
