OLYMPIA, Wash. – A 66-year-old woman with terminal cancer has become the first person to die under Washington state's new assisted suicide law, an advocacy group said Friday.

Linda Fleming, of Sequim, died Thursday night after taking drugs prescribed under the "Death with Dignity" law that took effect in March, said Compassion & Choices of Washington.

The organization said Fleming was diagnosed last month with advanced pancreatic cancer. She would have had to have been diagnosed by two doctors as terminal in order to qualify for assisted suicide.

I wonder what her general condition was, to know her as a person in this situation. I want to be a hospice nurse, so I'd be working with the terminally ill anyways, and had flirted with the idea (and all of the controversy) of being a nurse in a place that managed this kind of outcome.

This. Nothing is more inhumane than forcing a person to live in extreme pain and suffering against their will for the remainder of his or her life. Glad to see a law like that on the books in WA.

I think the brand of assisted suicide should be taken away from this. There is more pain in some diseases than people can, and should have to deal with. It was completely ignorant of us to allow it to go unsolved for so long. This is the path to the future.

Although, were I to have a terminal illness, causing me immense pain, I would wallow in it, and die from it, not a cocktail of drugs. Unless, that cocktail was of my own creation, and caused me great pleasure first.

jeez, doctor handing someone couple of pills or an injection to die over next few mins is one thing. couldn't handle smothering someone though

he might be telling the truth. where i use to work at the hospital there was several times a month where, we would smother people whom where going to die very soon (i'm talking about the 75+ and no famliy ones). They would have used drugs, but they keep track of that. And it's almost sad to say you would get in more trouble for taking the drugs out of the bottles then you would get for smothering some old bat.
