Controller issues

Recently started playing FFXI on the PC (used to play on 360), and due to not being able to find a hard copy anywhere I bought and downloaded the 2008 edition from gamesplanet. Everything installed fine, and works fine within Vista (didn't need the POL patch thing). But for some reason all the USB controllers I have tried will not work with XI. I have installed all the drivers etc, and both the XI and POL config recognize and allow me to program the control buttons, but ingame the controller doesn't work. It works in PlayOnline, but not in XI, and it's driving me insane. What's really frustrating is the configs recognized the controller, and it's definitely working as it works in POL, but it just will not work in XI.

Anybody have an supposed fixes/solutions? Like I said, I've tried numerous controllers, and they all work on the configuration apps so they are obviously recognized by the system/game. And yes, the gamepad box IS ticked...

Oh yeah, another minor annoyance. The official windowed mode doesn't seem to work for me. Even with the box ticked it still boots into fullscreen (POL is windowed, however).

I use a standard wired 360 controller to play on my pc. just dl and install a program called XBCD. You can it here Xbcd 360 Install Guide
After u dl it completely remove all the controller drivers and install them from there. The site tells you exactly how to do it.
Once you have the driver installed it will read XBCD gamepad or something. then go to your start menu and open your playonline folder > Final fantasy XI > final fantasy XI config. from there select gamepad settings and u can map your buttons exactly like they are set up when playing on 360.

If your windowed mode isnt working try installing windower. Its a great program. Windower [Windower.net]

this shouldn't be the problem, but it'd be interesting if it was

hit F8 on startup and disable device driver signature enforcement or whatever its called

other than that, i can't think of anything else off the top of my head
