Low-man Kirin

I'm interested in doing some low-man things with friends to avoid joining a big endgame LS at this point, and I was thinking about sky and Kirin. I know Kirin could be easily 6-10 manned after the summons, but I was wondering what the lowest number anyone had ever heard of it being done with without any Aegis or Gjallarhorn stories.

I'm not looking for a 10 min TP burn--a 2hr slow kill would be okay. Just looking for as low numbers as possible.

The simple answer is going to be, "What's the fewest you can handle the adds with?"


Theoretically with a stack of RR hairpins and infinite time, you could do it with 3 people, someone to tank and kill, rdm to heal and help kite, blm to sac kirin + adds for an hour while you kill off the adds 1 at a time and eventually actually kill him...


More realistically, add a kiter, 2 rng, and maybe a smn, hope you can kill the adds fast enough and be prepared to sac for a bit if you can't.

Believe my ls has done it with 12. whm ktes kirin (yea a whm) while everything else kills the adds.

a good dd backbone and some blms is all you really need for adds. just be sure to stun seiryu (you've gotten to kirin i'm sure you know this already) and suzaku. occasionally stun byakko. then have your "tank" pt pick up the whm and take over kiting kirin while melee and blms take him down. Won't take 2hrs (at least it shouldn't) we usually do it in 30-45 min.

Edit: Basically anything can kite kirin btw. Just make sure they do not act on him, just pop and run, and you can cure bomb them as much as you like and shouldn't get hate. At least that's how we do it, though having a whm kite means they can cure themselves so that's good. might want an additional member in the kiting pt to erase the kiter regardless of if you have a whm kiting.

Put a good NIN/DRK on Kirin kiting duty, give him a RDM, and by the time the pops are dead he'll have capped hate and everyone can go nuts right from the start.

PLD/NIN Kiter + RDM/WHM Kite Assist

PLD BRD WHM RDM/DRK BLM BLM

BLM BLM SAM RNG for adds.


Just be ready for a long fight.

If your job options are severely limited, I think the lowest and arguably hardest setup my old ls has done it with looked like this:

Kite: PLD/NIN. 1 person in the party, fuck hate control, just stay alive.

Add Kite if a second pops before first dies: Rdm/Blm

Main: Pld, Pld, Whm, Rdm, Rng, War
Main2: Thf, Sam

The add kite supported main alliance and enfeebled the current pop, and kited around the second if one popped before main got it down. We had no brds or blms in the ls at the time, was pretty proud of the kill. But yes, your two kiters have to be really self-sufficient. And it will take a long time.

I have kited kirin with my war/nin and another member with his red mage plenty of times and I can say I have not had any issues.

So basically any job with some form of damage absorbtion + a RDM kiting, and then a TP burn PT and a BLM or two on the summons should take care of it?

We just did a Kirin on Friday with 12 people and a dual box. Our whms kept d/cing so it wasn't as smooth as we would have liked, but the only "problem" we had was Suzaku; our tank didn't get out of range in time for his CS. Steup was:

Kiting Nin Rdm

Pld Whm Whm Rdm

Kite: NIN/DRK -- RDM/WHM

BRD/WHM -- WHM WAR WAR PLD MNK THF---(THF didn't fight, was left outside for TH.
BRD/WHM -- WHM RDM SAM RNG(The WHM and RDM were two boxed by the SAM)
That was for our latest run, didn't plan to low-man.. but thats what we got left with. We killed minis, and then just fought kirin straight up until we took too much damage/healers needed MP, and we kited again. AF hit us pretty good but a fair number of us survived, and recovered pretty easy.

A good pup/sch can be a boon for taking kirin down semi reasonably quick, and you can have them swap to whm auto to help heal the mini gods if you don't need more damage but are low on healing, or blm auto to nuke the mini's if that's what you require. My oniwaka parsed 16.58% on kirin last time using dark/thunder/fire maneuvers, and he was missing 2 fine tuning merits and 4 auto melee skill merits still. He beat two diabolos's too. :3

The highest anyone got other than him was a highly geared/merited blm for 9.49%, so you can get an idea how how good automatons are for this, as they dont have trouble hitting for higher than 0.

Other than that, healing is pretty important for mini gods, not as much for kirin himself provided your kiter isn't stupid and their healer erases them asap after bind/wakes after sleep. the biggest threats are kirins 2 hour and the mini gods, and maybe stonega IV if someone sucks at kiting. having a dedicated person call out who has hate with an /as <t> followed by <t> has hate macro really helps too.

Oh, and dia > bio for this, in case you get a weird mage wanting to lower his regen. Kirin's defense is so high the lowered defense from dia is a huge boon to killing him quickly.

^Your BLMs probably sucked then. Just because they get resisted on every single nuke using full damage gear and spells like Tornado II/Aeroga III doesn't mean PUP is a better DD for Kirin.

Not to say they're "better" by any means, but for some reason pets don't seem to have much ACC issue on Kirin. I remember in like early 05 the group I was running with had a career BST, he'd stick Carrie on from the very start, and she'd keep him down to 98-99%, and didn't appear to miss much at all.
