You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    Wireless lag spikes

So about a month and a half ago we started getting these annoying lag spikes (nothing was changed). Literally every 3-5 minutes while playing a game, I would lag out for a good 5 + seconds. Which is highly irritating for games (can't cure etc). WE tried buying a new wireless router today to see if it would help. We got a WRT400N today to see if it works, but it's still happening.

Again this probelm started like a month ago, and nothing changed to cause this.

We've tried messing with settings n' moving it around the room, n' such but nothing seems to be working. ;; Any ideas?

I'm guessing it doesn't happen with a wired connection? Does is happen on any other machines? If not for both questions, I'd suspect your machine's wireless hardware/software.

I had a similar issue with my Linksys Wireless Internal Card (WRTG54 v4.1), and it was driving me nuts. I tried anything and everything, I could never fix it...I guess it has to do with Windows (Vista mainly) WZC. I just ended up buying a USB wireless adapter, and that fixed my issue instantly. I'm not sure if you have the same issue as me though, but it sure sounds like it-

omg so I need to post problems on bg right away because magically it always fixes my problem.

It IS windows vista. What's retarded is iono why it just started a month ago, but I guess windows vista every 60 seconds starts searching for "the best internet" which basically lags you out every 60 seconds.

If anyone has started getting lag spikes do this:

    1. Start-> Search box -> type cmd -> hit enter
    2. type: ping yourIPhere -t -> hit enter
    3. Watch it and see if every minute to ten minutes you get an insane spike
    4. If so go here: WLAN Optimizer .NET
    5. d/l that program and install, sucks it always has to run, bit it basically overrides Vista's pinging.
    5. repeat step 2 and 3 to see if the lag spike stops.

Wanted to post this, because this had to have been caused by a recent Vista update or something. We've had Vista for almost 3 years now and it just decided to start doing it.

If anyone else is having a lag problem and is using vista, try out that progam to see if it fixes.

It's weird that it took me a month to finally find that thing ;; been driving me nuts up until then.

I have this very same issue, I've been dealing with this these lag spikes for 9 months.

That optimizer thingy doesn't seem to work, I'm still getting lag spikes >_> gues I'll have to get an USB adapter or something ...

Back when I had these lag spikes or frequent disconnections, I called up my ISP to have them check on their equipment. It took a month before they finally realized that it was happening to the entire building when they could have sent the person to check the amplifier that routed our service

A wireless network card is always going to be better than a USB wifi dongle in terms of spikiness. I used to use a Belkin USB adapter and it would spike about every 10 minutes for 2-3 seconds, so I couldn't really play anything that effectively. I switched to an Abit Airpace network card and everything worked fine afterwards.

Do you have multiple wireless networks in range that you connect to? It could be that Windows thinks you are roaming so it tries to switch the active wifi network from time to time. I think if you delete/disable the network profiles that you don't use the lag spikes will stop.

I used to have a program for XP+Vista that would stop the Wifi adapter from refreshing the available network list, but I lost it when I reinstalled Win7 .

To be honest, it never helped me, though. I guess something works for everyone, though.

Have you checked your wifi card's manufacturer for software? I have to deal with a piece of crap software that deals with the WiFi connection for my Linksys card, but it doesn't have the spikes that WZC offered, which also took me months to figure out on my own. <.<

I used to have this problem back when i hardcore played CS, and the only fix i found was putting the router in my room and wiring it to my PC.

[edit] this was on XP btw, so not a "vista" thing.

My friend said something about port forward/trigger? Anyone know much about this and if it'd help?

idk what trigger is, but theres always port forwarding. google it and youll get a bunch of stuff.

[edit] im not saying that port forwarding will fix it, just saying it might help.

    Some things to try:

Change the wireless channel from its default 6 to something like 11 or 1. Turn off Upnp. Try a different encryption (or none at all) and also drive a different wireless adapter to see if any of those improve it.
