As I said earlier, I think that sanctions are an immoral way to try to force another country to do what you want. The one idea that I had not thought of to try to force North Korea's hand was brought up by Australia's foreign minister in an interview on NPR that I listened to last night: block the government's access to foreign banks. This is actually a strategy that has been used before against them and is the one thing that actually made the top officials reconsider their actions and it makes sense. Apparently, the top officials keep most of their money in foreign banks and so by shutting down their access we're no longer hurting the poor innocent citizenry (at least not directly) of North Korea we're bankrupting the rich top officials who all keep their money in foreign banks. I think this is a solid plan that should certainly be tried before we do any more penis waving.

do you really think they'll bomb SK over bank accounts? They've had the capacity to kill a lot of South Koreans for years and years now, and there's certainly been previous times where they've threatened to under the auspices of "acts of war" by someone else, but the fact still remains that a military action causes them to lose in the end.

KJI is likely only a few years away from dying. He is currently working to plant one of his sons in power after his death. Realistically, if he can not prove to the elite of the country that keeping a Kim in power is best for them, he's hooped. If the powerful feel that they are being turned into paupers because KJI is antagonizing foreign powers, it's possible he could do the unthinkable to consolidate power internally.

I heard that the US split them up (big surprise there, huh?), but i'm neither certain of that nor do i know anything more about the entire issue.

tldr :

- Germany falls in world war 2, US wants USSR to invade Japan (starting with Korea, which was under Japanese control at the time) to help end war.
- USSR does so, invades Korea, stops at 38th parallel as instructed.
- WW2 ends, USSR still has "control" of Korea north of 38th parallel, US troops in the south.
- After the war, they agreed to split the country along the parallel for various political reasons.
- Cold War begins, North is backed by USSR/China, South by US/Japan/etc.

Sorry no pictures or songs, but yeah, thats the gist of how they became split. Someone then had the brilliant idea of re-unifying the country, which lead the North to invade the South in 1950. US intervenes on behalf of the south and counterattacks, China backs the north and counter-counterattacks, which ends up back where we started at the 38th parallel dividing the country in 1953. /end

The easy guide to why there are two Koreas:

In 1895, Japan defeated China in the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–5, and their Japanese forces remained in Korea.

In 1938, Korean and its literature were banned from schools and conscription began.

One WWII later, Soviet forces arrive in Korea on August 10, 1945 and remain north of the 38th parallel. On September 9, 1945, the American forces show up and formally accept the surrender of Japanese forces south of the 38th parallel.

During deliberations on how to deal with conquered nations, the wishes of the Korean people to be free of foreign interference were not considered. The 38th parallel became the splitting line, because of convenience more than anything - it was already the demarcation between occupation zones in the Korean peninsula.
