So, what's your plan to deal with NK then? Diplomacy has failed, sanctions have failed, aid with strings has failed. While regrettable that taking out the NK power base will involve civilian casualties, this is a far better option than NK launching a nuke at Tokyo or Seoul, and a million times better than Jong-Il giving the methods to create atomic warheads to other authoritarian governments.

I simply do not see a peaceful resolution of this quagmire. I am really surprised China isn't doing too much to prevent another war in the korean peninsula seeing its hands are tied with combating the recession and stimulating the economy. A conventional war has to be the least of its interest.

I think there is probably a lot going on behind the scenes, but China has worked privately very hard for a peaceful situation that hasn't worked out for them. Now that China is being public, we'll see a change in NK, most likely.

    I got an idea:

Seriously though, more letters of warning aren't going to do much to stop NK. Diplomacy here should be used for the surrounding countries of NK.
If Russia and China are with us on this one, then it's over before it starts otherwise, I'll be downstairs, continuing work on my fallout shelter, and stacking cans of Dinty Moore.

wwbd? Beckwin continues dealing with the shenanigans by largely ignoring it, as has been the protocal for the past decade; all the comments about Seoul and Tokyo are a bit worthless because if we attack NK, those cities are not gonna be very safe... Think of it this way: if NK attacks, Seoul is fucked. If we attack, Seoul is also fucked. If we "glass" Pyongyang, you've still got a shitton of artillery going off on Seoul plus whatever nuclear potential they have. It takes all kinds of stupid to be the one taking the initiative in wiping out up to 20 million people.

Beef up missile defense systems if needed, but pursue diplomatic avenues. Since NK has just gone the full 9 by testing nukes and methods of delivery, SK and other nations that have been sending aid have ample ground to stop doing so until a UN team can dismantle and monitor the country's weapons programs. China also has legitimate interests in NK not going apeshit, because China needs the US (and to lesser degrees, SK and Japan) to maintain it's mode of economic growth (heavily export based) so it can fully modernize and develop it's own middle class to then shift towards a service and technology economy. China doesn't give a shit about old grudges with the Japanese or the greatness of the Juche and the Kims.

While I find the DPRK's amazingly circular logic in some respects amusing (hey, we're being dicks and not respecting the spirit of the armistice - what's that, you don't like that? OK ARMISTICE OFF LOL SEE YOU IN HELL), I really do wish someone would sit down and have a long chat with the North Korean leadership.

I'm not talking diplomatically. I mean, professional help. I hear psychoanalysis is a lot cheapter than uranium for resolving inferiority complexes.

Ok, but all forms of diplomacy have failed. What next?

EDIT: I'm not espousing the Yankee Fuck yeah-ism here. I am legitimately saying diplomacy in all forms has utterly failed and must be abandoned as a main tactic for dealing with NK.

Beckwin is totally right, can't stop trying the diplomatic way, because is the only way, NK is just trying to see how far can put pressure to SK and USA, i am almost sure NK government last thing they will do is to start a war or a nuclear attack over any country on the region, although i see this coming close as what was the missil crisis with Cuba, i feel bad for people of both koreas, living under those conditions is just terrible for anyone.

part of diplomacy is not taking their trollbait and launching an offensive attack.

They are using diplomacy as a cover for continuing to develop nuclear weapons. Once they have them(ICBMs etc), they hold all the cards. We won't be able to do anything because they will just say "ope, we bomb u nao" which you can already see emirging in this situation. Diplomacy obviously isn't working. If china and Russia signed on board there is no reason not to put them in their place. They are going to keep building on what they have until we deal with the situation.

they don't hold all the cards because they're still ridiculously poor and frankly that's one of the reasons they pull these stunts- to have something to bargain with for more aid. SK sends a lot of aid north because they don't want koreans to starve and at the same time think they might be safer assuming NK would for once hold up their end of the bargain.

and again, did you completely miss what I said about an attack resulting in a lot of deaths no matter which way you cut it? Guns aimed at seoul aren't really gonna be bothered by China and Russia not giving them moral support.

I really don't see how NK holds any cards right now.

If they launched a missile at SK/Japan, they'd be glassed by SSBNs before it even landed.

That's right now. If they keep going in the way they are how long before they can hit Washington or other cities? They are going to keep testing their missiles and bombs regardless of what we do. When that's the case everyone will kowtow to them because they don't want to start shit with someone with nukes.

    aka, beckwin's current argument.

you're acting like not wanting to mess with someone who has nukes is a particularly new or dangerous concept. heaven forbid if a totalitarian government gets nukes that could hit the US, we will most certainly perish! lern2history

like I keep saying, it's nothing but bravado and bargaining chips. they want nukes so they can't get pushed as easily/have more regional leverage; it's just like Iran- don't take the trollbait.

^Exactly. The problem is its not just that NK has these things but NK makes all of its money off the export of weapons and by them having them, iran and friends also have them. North korea has developed pretty much every missile that Iran has. When they have ICBMs so does the rest of the world. But that's not the point.

That's the problem. North korea has been doing this for decades. When do we tell them we are done with it? They keep pulling the same fucking trick and we keep falling for it. Enough is enough. If China and Russia are on board (which seems to more and more be the case) we need to bitch slap them in some way. I don't know if that's a full on invasion of the country. Any war is bad. But there has to be a way, even if it means doing a full blockaid on their country to make them knock the shit off.
