    Electric Shaver Woe's

Well, here is the story. I have been using an electric shaver to trim my beard/goatee for about 4-5 years now. I also use it to "pre-shave" other parts of my face so my regular razors dont get junked up in like 2 strokes.

About a year ago, my 3 year old electric razor met its demise. I never had any problems with it so I looked for the same brand (Wahl) but couldn't find the same model since it was rather old. So I picked up a cheapo thinking they were all pretty much the same. No problems for like 6 months. Then I noticed it would start pulling hairs rather than cutting them. If anybody has ever had this problem, you know it isn't pleasant. Regardless of the length, it would just keep pulling every few seconds. This forces me to go incredibly slow and shaving takes forever. I toughed it out for another 2 months then the piece of junk died anyway.

So I get a new one, a more expensive one that I thought I'd get my moneys worth for (Still a Wahl). However, right off the bat it starts pulling hairs. Now I've been using this one for a couple months and it still does it. I'm not sure whether to blame my face or the shavers at this point. My face is pretty dry all year round which could be causing it. But I'm not sure that is it.

So my question, has anybody had similar problems and if so, how did you remedy it?

I always thought most electric razors "grab" hairs to be cut?

The typical major designs include the foil variety which uses a structure of layered metal bands that partially pull out the hair before cutting off the extracted length and then allowing the remainder to retract below the skin. The other design is the rotary type with circular blade structures, usually three in a triangular arrangement which has the same shaving function.

My bet is that it's your hair.

I've been using electric razors since right after high school (24 now) and haven't gone back since. Just like regular razors you can notice a difference between a cheap one and quality. From my understanding Wahl is a cheap-walmart brand. I've owned remington. norelcos, and brauns and I'd have to say that braun is the shit. The problems your having with pulling hairs is normal with all new razors. Your hair growth adjusts to usage over time. Juts use the trimmer on the side before digging on the thick stuff.

read your owner's manual to see how often you are supposed to replace the blades.
if they are dull then you will get a pulling effect on your hair

I have only been shaving for about 5 years on a daily basis and gone through 5 electric razors, 4 cheap and one expensive. I gave up.. fuck electric razors. I started using Schiek (sp?) quarto's about a month ago. Ya, its expensive over time, but I love the quality and ease of shaving now. I also dont break out with that random zit somewhere on my face anymore. I use a neutrogena for men shaving lotion.

yeah I stopped using electric a long time ago, I use mach 3 turbo, has an additonal gel strip which I find helps on my sensitive skin

I refuse to shave every day, thankfully my hair isn't so dark and dense that I need to; I'm sure my work would like it better if I shaved every other day but I get away with twice a week and I just have light to moderate stubble -- shaving every day would make my skin way too raw

I'm convinced nothing will give me the perfect shave, unless there's some skin product I don't know about, perhaps an old fashioned brush and straight razor would work, I have no idea

Didn't want to make a new thread because I know I'd just be linked the 20 other shaving threads, so I'm bumping what appears to be the most recent thread on this subject.

I am long overdue for upgrading from my old cheap electric razor. I don't want to skimp on it though, I want something good that I can rely on for a long time to come and will make sense to invest a relatively large amount of money into.

Currently I'm torn between the Braun Series 7- 790cc Pulsonic Shaver and Philips Norelco arcitec 1060 Men's Shaving System. Obviously the Phillips Norelco will be a bit cheaper (~$60) but when I read reviews and such Braun is just praised so highly and there are more amazon reviews for it. If anyone has personal experience on the subject or with either razor specifically I'd appreciate any input on the matter to tip me one way or the other.

    Thanks in advance.

I used to get really bad razor burn/bumps from electric razors, but I haven't had a problem since I picked a decent electric that can be rinsed/operated wet and got a good shaving gel to use with it. It seems a little weird to use shave gel with an electric but it def. helps with the pulling, or seems to.

Rinsing your blades out every time you use the razor and replacing them every 6 months seems to help too.

Been using this for the past year.

Uing this for any areas that need detail.

    Probably will stick with the combo until either;

    A. Can afford laser hair removal.
    B. Something else comes out thats better for replacement.

I currently don't get any stubble/missed areas (specifically with the Arcitec). Also don't have any problems with ingrown hairs/etc. As long as I keep the blades cleaned or polished in between shaves. I've never had a problem.

To note, I just use the Gil/Fusion gel that is formulated for clear skin.

I'm in the market for a new electric and looking for one that will last me a long time. Bonus if it gets as close to using a razor as possible. Any good suggestions?

I've been using the same Braun Syncro for the past 5 years, never lets me down; only things I've had to replace are the blades (18mo), the cleaning solution (like 3mo? I don't track, I just replace the cartridge when the light tells me to), and the cleaning stand (one-time replacement there, and it was only recently that I had to do so; the unit worked fine but the snap-in that would trigger the cleaning broke and wouldn't hold the razor in...easy $40 replacement on ebay)

Which model is the Arcitec and what do you use along side it? The only razor I've had I never replaced the blades on or maintained it besides rinsing it after using it. Like gels, lubricants, upkeep, etc. what am I looking at with it? It is the cheaper option and if it performs well that's all that matters really, the Braun just looked cool because of the self-cleaning functionality.

I use a 10 dollar b eard trimmer from target and "pre-shave" with that on the lowest setting and then actually shave with a gilette mach 5 fusion turbo xx holyshitcutyourhair. It works and I get a damn good shave, but literally the next day I'm already growing stubble. My skin is really sensitive too so I can't shave everyday, or even twice a day. I normally shave Sunday night, Then again on Thursday morning but I hate having to wake up early for work. I would like to get laser hair removal but I don't know if one day I'll end up wanting to grow a beard or something =/

To anyone who has problems with shaving with a straight razor, try this:

    It's quite good.

Used shave secret about a year ago. If you have problems with acne, or even mild acne at that. You definitely want to avoid using it. I'm not saying its a crappy product, because it does what its supposed to. But it will horribly clog your pores, even if you try to use a cleanser afterward.

Huh, never thought about that. Thanks for letting me know, if I ever recommend it to anyone else I'll let them know about that side effect ;o
