the range of motion isn't large at all, long hair makes it look like you're moving more than you are..and I don't think I've ever seen anyone with short hair headbang

^That's Samael (from back in the day). Vorph (guitarist/singer) always just uses his body to lead his headbanging. Meanwhile, Mas (bassist) looks like he's going to break his neck most of the time... However, if you really look at Mas, he doesn't move his head that much, but uses his body to swing his hair. Then Xy (drummer) windmills and does "power bangs" or whatever you want to call them, but drummers do that.
I never knew Samael used to be good once...saw them before Obituary once and I had to leave the room because they were just TOO awful. Thanks for the tip though.
As for my "technique"...since I only got into metal a bit late in my life (18 ) I mimicked who got me into it: Slipknot. Obviously that wasn't a good idea since Corey Taylor's neck is almost as big as my whole body, but here's what I mean:

At around :28, when the song starts he does the windmill and I do mine the same way, so mainly from the neck.
I'll try the other method out next week...Machine Head gig.
