Nah the reality of 2.5 mil would cancel out the overplayed.

Also, it just occured to me that Texas doesn't have a state income tax, so that lady is really going to the bank.
Uncle Sam would still take a nice chunk though wouldn't they? Probably be left with 1.6-1.7m if they look a lump sum, or a bit more if they took the annual payment option.

It's not really that much money if you think about it. Not enough to quit your job, anyway. Even assuming you kept the same lifestyle (maybe pay off loans/mortgage, buy a new car) and invested the money and her current job was 50k/yr, the money would dry up in 10-15 years.

Personally I'd just take a part-time job somewhere that I liked to cover the daily bills, and spend a lot of time traveling around with the winnings!

I'd like to keep working if I hit it big, but wouldn't you lose most of your paycheck in income taxes ? All the winnings money has to bump you up to a higher tax bracket.

Maybe stick to charity or volunteer work if that's true, or just find a job that pays extremely well.

Lump sum Lotto winnings aren't taxed the same as salaried incomes, so no, it wouldn't bump you into another tax bracket. Pay all the taxes up front and be done with it.

The levy on lotto or fortuitous winning is pretty steep up to 50%.

Yeah, if/when she comes into work for the last time, I'll ask her how much the tax was.

that is true, but getting the sum in payments does count toward annual income, no?

There is no way I would stop working all together for 2mil. While yes, its a shit ton of money, I would just act on it as if I had just received a nice bonus check (or so I can say since I don't have it). But to logically think about it that money wouldn't last long enough to just go jobless and have no experience 20-30years down the road when you are out of money. If anything, you'd fuck yourself over so bad.

Probably open another store or two (already have two) or completely renovate our current ones.

    Huh?

Unless I am doing the math horribly wrong, you could get 6% easy off of 2mil.

If you can't live off of 120k single something is the matter with you.

While generally it seems like the people who win this shit are not the smartest investors though so I do understand somewhat.

    On topic:

When I was working at UPS I would always say I had a test to study for or some group was meeting.

I know a lot of things that I would do if I won but "I'm on my way to Austin" is not one of them. Sounded strange to me.

I think one of the first things I would do is show up at the airport and ask for the first international flight out (within reason of course. )

You can't cash a 2.5 million dollar ticket at the grocery store. She was going to Austin to collect her winnings and fill out the necessary paperwork I'm sure.

Back when I still worked at the hospital I called my boss 45 minutes after my shift started and had this conversation
    Me: Hello?
Boss: Where the hell are you? you're late!
    Me: I'm in the hospital...
Boss: That's a lie, I haven't seen you this morning get down here now...
Me: No, wait, I'm in the hospital...
Boss: Then get down here, or I'll cut your break...
Me: (goddammit) I'm at the hospital I...
    Boss: You already said that...
Me: I'M IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM WITH AN INJURED BACK YOU INTERRUPTING SON OF A...
Boss: Oh! why didn't you say so?! Make sure you run your medical papers down to use your sick leave. You don't want to be late on that.
    Me: (not even listening)
