The thread title made it sound like a crowd of people were circled around the scene just staring. At first I thought this happened in Japan. What 20 year old chills out and gets drunk with homeless people?

What's fucked up is that the "victim" decided to have a drink or two with a hobo. You really can't go doing that sort of thing with strangers.

Yeah, that's definitely the messed up part. The rape isn't bad at all in comparison, right? They got what they deserved for hanging out with another human being in broad daylight, in a place frequented by dozens of other people regularly, and not expecting anything terrible to happen.

It's a good thing people in the US are almost universally opposed to saying things like "hello" when they walk by total strangers in the street, too. They might get bent over a park bench and raped if they tried to be polite like in other countries. And they'd deserve it just as much.

Except they wouldn't, and you're a fucking idiot.

Hanging out with bums may not be the smartest thing, but an optimist would like to think they're normal people just the same. This isn't exactly like someone meeting a guy in a dark alley in the middle of the night and not expecting to get raped.

Only funny cause it's surprisingly true despite being sarcasm!

Given that anywhere between 20% and 40% of homeless suffer from some form of mental illness that's going clearly untreated, hanging out with one goes beyond 'not the smartest thing' into 'asking for trouble.'

She didn't ask to be raped but she took some pretty stupid fucking risks.

That doesn't change the fact that an optimist would hope to be dealing with one of the 60% who aren't, and that doing it in the middle of the day isn't the same as loitering in a dark city corner during the night.

Was it very smart? No. Was it as absolutely boneheaded as can be? No, I wouldn't say that, either.

I live in the "Home of the Homeless," and I see crazies of all manner at least several times a week. It's pretty cool that Raegan let them all out, really. Fantastic. He was a great governor. It's not at all delicious irony that he eventually lost his mind to Alzheimer's.

    So, moving on.

There have been a lot of times where I've been waiting somewhere for something and have really had no choice but to "hang out" with a homeless person, as they wouldn't go away, and wouldn't stop talking to me. Some have even followed me onto buses and the like. Have I ever been sexually assaulted? Yes, though never raped.

Whether this person should've been getting drunk in public or not is something that's already being argued on another thread here in General Discussion, coincidentally. Whether they should have faith in humanity or not -- I'd certainly like to hope that they could.

I lived in SF for a long time and one thing that you learn in a city is to have street smarts. Now yes you should be optimistic and yes you should have faith in people, no you should not be oblivious to dangers and go about acting on that optimism. It is a horrible thing that happened to her and the guy is responsible 100% and it was horrible that no one helped her. However it was a very boneheaded thing to do to go get drunk with a homeless person. As a fairly fit mid 20's male I felt uncomfortable just hanging out with the homeless people downtown SF not because I am a prude but because I have seen a lot of violent things on the street between homeless people and I do not trust that nothing would happen.

In my experience the types of homeless people who are normal down on their luck people try to move to outlying areas in a city. They try to set up a nice camp somewhere. The homeless people that hang out downtown or in a park in the middle of a city are either on drugs or have some sort of mental illness. I know this is a generalization because this is based off my personal experience in SF.

Do we know that the person specifically planned to go there and get drunk with homeless people? Or did they simply want to get drunk in the park, regardless of who was there? Without knowing all of these things, I'm not about to assume that the person was entirely stupid. There's also the matter of it being the middle of the day in a public place, which has been emphasized a few times.

If they chugged down beers with homeless guys on the regular, then I'd agree with you. They made a stupid decision. If they were getting drunk in a park and there happened to be homeless guys in the area, I don't agree at all. It's next to impossible to avoid going to any kind of a park here without homeless people being around at all times.

One does not play wheel of fortune with one's own safety. If I cross a street without looking both ways I expect to get hit, even if the odds of the people driving on it are 60% likely or more to hit their brakes and stop. Hanging out with the homeless is inherently dangerous, especially given the culture of mental illness + substance abuse that runs pretty wild in that sector of the population. Given the details of the story it does look like she took candy from a stranger and paid the price. I'm sorry I judged her behavior as stupid but don't say there's nothing to learn from this. Optimist or not, you have to possess the ability to make educated fucking decisions about 'hey maybe this isn't a good idea to trust this man.'

That is a very valid point. If she went there to get drunk and happened to be around the homeless people that is one thing. If she went there without the intention of drinking and happened to sit down and drink with the homeless dude when he offered that would be extremely stupid. Also the middle of the day seems like it should be safer but in a big city with a lot of strange people that is not the case at all and you always have to be aware of your own safety. Like I said walking down the street in the middle of the day in SF I would have to be aware of my surroundings and aware of the people nearby.

I like how we're portraying going to the park to get wasted as not stupid...as long as we didn't intend to do it with homeless people.

    Boggles my mind.

Had she been with at least one friend looking out for her none of this would have happened. It's a damn shame but yes, it's still true in 2009 that 20 year olds think they're invincible.

Kohan: So, I'm walking down the street of my neighborhood, and decide it's a nice day, so I take a walk in the park. I'm feeling like a drink is in order, and some fabulous homeless fellow offers to share some of his elixir with me. So, after a little bit, my judgment is impaired. And the fact that the majority of homeless are mentally neglected totally doesn't register in my mind. It's like that other poster said, taking candy from a stranger.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Faith in humanity? Yeah to do the right thing, but you don't put yourself into the position to be screwed with. What kind of retard does? Clearly, this "victim", but seriously, use your goddamn brain.

But zomg you can never blame the victim, no matter how stupid they are, because they're teh victim and you're a nazi if you blame them.

Sorry but this bitch was stupid to begin with. She probably mentioned it to the guy messing around, the bum being drunk probably took it seriously and proceeded to take action. Now she's the apparent victim because she decided to cock tease some pussy-starving bum when they were both drunk as shit.

Not too far-fetched considering who the fuck drinks with random homeless strangers in broad daylight to begin with.

'He forced her to receive oral sex.' I guess I know a lot of women that want to get raped.

Also. Yes. She is stupid. You don't sit down and drink with homeless people.
