I'd be happy enough if they make a proper ps3 port, that is, a PC-esque high-res FFXI without choppy gameplay.
X360 port was horrible. I had to face to the walls in first person mode to be able to stun shit properly and crowded areas like Whitegate were horrible. This was back in 2007, however.
About PC's, I remember running FFXI on a Pentium 550~, 768 MB RAM, GeForce MX200 32 MB Video RAM computer and it was running rather good on that junk. You'd expect the game to run flawlessly on newer computers with budget cards but FFXI is a DirectX 8 game and simply can't use the resources of newer cards as good as a new engine.
I wasn't running shit in the background and I don't recall setting a partition size(assuming it takes the default PS2 HDD size, right?)
I dunno, they may have improved it; it's been a year since I logged in on it. I somehow doubt it's working fucking with since I have the game on 360 and PC as well.
Why would they put a dying game on yet another console? They're trying to kill it, remember?
So, the rumor now is that their next MMO is going to be PS3 exclusive!
I guess they never learn. Gotta love their persistence though!
*EDIT* READ STRESSED RUMOR TEXT!
In terms of consoles, yeah they might make it ps3 exclusive for a couple of years. They'll definitely release a PC version, though.
There was an interview with the Star Onions guy, that's it.
People would be better off building a $5-600 PC and hooking it up to their TV, and get better results than another port can provide.
For those of us gaming on consoles though, it's a big convenience to not have to deal with issues PC users do, like driver updates or incompatabilities, and background software interfering with the game. Even the PC port of THIS game suffers from driver issues, such as the one forcing me to use a driver for my card from 2005, which still causes graphical glitches like game terrain geometry deforming and causing spikes to appear in most maps in random places. Otherwise, I have to spend even more money to upgrade my machine with a hard-to-find AGP card better than the one I already have, for the sole purpose of playing this game, or I have to build an entirely new computer. Besides this game, my computer does everything I want to do as well as I need it to do it, and it's not a very bad machine by current standards. A console version is much more convenient and easier to simply get running, without having to tackle other problems on the machine.
but what if you wanted to play a different game? boned, etc
granted, I have no trouble playing ffxi on most systems, but I dont have very difficult to find gear in my laptop, its crappy, but it works. sort of.
The biggest problem I see with a PS3 version of FFXI is that PS3 updates will matter when logging on (Can bypass them and update later for PS2 games, but PS3 games require the updates).
I thought driver problems are long gone. I update my nVidia 8800GTX (Win XP) drivers every couple of months and dont have any problems. As far as i know, only nVidia cards had driver problems.
I did do it once and had the game running fine. Then SE broke it when they released WotG and my frame rate went to hell. I contacted them about it and they linked me to a driver version from 2005 saying I would get no support unless I was using that driver version, because they don't support newer versions. Fixing the problem when a company patches their game is a headache, and you don't deal with that on a console, because everyone has the same hardware, and thus the same problem, so it gets fixed faster.
Even with the driver version they told me to use, I get crap like 5 FPS in Qufim with weather turned off, special effects turned off, shadows turned off, and footstep effects turned off, just by being in a 6 person party fighting a pugil. With a newer driver though, I'd be at like 1 FPS in that situation, and 12 in my mog house.
For the record, my machine is a 3 GHz Pentium 4 HT with 3 GB of RAM and an AGP Radeon 9600 Pro, running WIndows XP Pro SP3. It shouldn't be running this bad, and it wasn't before WotG.
Even with supported drivers, many people get polygonal artifacting or weird texture tears. With all this talk of a PS3 version, can someone who plays on a PS2 tell us if that's "a feature, not a bug"?![]()
Never had that issue on PS2. Started getting it on PC when WotG forced me to downgrade my graphics card drivers.
So much fun being main WHM for Mammet CoP 2-5 fight and having 6 FPS with all effects off, all textures compressed, and running at 640x480 overlay resolution and 256x256 background resolution...
