which business major/s will get me farther?

im about to be a sophomore in college and im in the business school. (you dont declare an official major until junior year)
i used to be electrical engineering major but i hated it so the next best thing that interested me is business..
right now im in marketing but i dont really know much about it..
    im considering these majors though:

accounting - stable jobs but i heard its boring though
finance and economics - no idea what jobs these will get me but it sounds interesting
marketing - i wanna do strategic planning and stuff like that.. but im afraid of being a telemarketer or some shit like that
information systems management - sounds interesting since i have IT experience before and i liked it.

    thanks in advanced bg

Don't they have academic advisor for this kind of shit?

Not trying to be a douche or anything, but that's a waaay better place to start than an internet forum.

    Bachelors? None of the above.

If you wanted money, stick with EE.

If you dont want to actually work while getting your bachelors, pick the easiest then go straight for your MBA (can make decent money with an MBA).

The B.A. in business is a super fucking saturated market.

The best option would be to major in finance and economics and minor in Information management.

There's no point in majoring in EE if you hate it. Life is too short and you probably won't have a career in EE after if you don't like it.

Marketing is good but so many people do it its difficult to actually find a career in it. Finance is a little boring but if you are good at it, it can be very rewarding.

But honestly a normal bachelors degree will only get you so far anymore. If you want to have real success get your MBA. According to www.rotman.utoronto.ca/career/stats.pdf the average starting salary hovered around the $80,000 (CDN stats) mark.

I'm in Bachelor of Commerce with a major in marketing - but my degree is more focused on finance than the typical Badmin.

Yep, you WILL NOT get a good job with a BA in business right out of college (statistically speaking, Im sure there are a few people that get good deals, regardless of the degree). If you hate EE, then me and you have very little in common, but you are right to not pursue it. If you like the business world, get your MBA.

80k is about right, but you have to realize that not as many people are hiring right now due to the economy, so be prepared to take a little less, even with an MBA.

Also, bachelors is nothing nowadays. Go to law school, medical school, or get your MBA.

And to be clear of where Im getting my info:

Got my BS in EE/Physics/math -> went on to get a 70k a year job (west coast)-> went to grad school -> make about 15k more with 4 years of grad school done.

Wife got BS in physics -> got same job as me >.> -> went on to 2 years of MBA school -> makes slightly more than me..

Ill probably be changing to Law here after this next deployment, because I am a greedy fuck and dont want to work in a lab for the rest of my life with little to no upward mobility.

When comes to earning potential then the holy grail in business is MBA + CFA, you may not earn as much as a lawyer but it's close. Plus you can be a fund manager one day where the ultimate payout really is.

I have a Masters in Accounting and got a BA in Accounting and Finance. My belief is that unless you want to do investment banking, accounting > finance (for undergraduate at least). There is very little in Finance that I didn't learn in accounting and coming out it will be easier to find a job (the Big 4 recruit like crazy at UGA and other big name schools).

So I'd say do accounting first and then if you had time/opportunity dual major or get a minor in finance/economics. I feel this route will provide you with the best well rounded business education. Marketing is for hot blondes and a dumb degree and I can't speak on much about ISM.

Eh, EE ain't that bad, I chose CE though. They are almost identical but differentiate in like 5 core courses. One of my friends already graduated and is working for CAT. Not a bad gig since he'll be getting about 100k per year ;o

    Edit: See adviser.

Honestly, your B.A. doesn't matter that much. If you want a career in business you should aim for your M.B.A. (masters in business administration). A business undergrad is not required to get into the master program, but it would help you out.

I am an international studies major and will be applying for the international version of the M.B.A. (M.I.M., master in international management). My undergrad is not business oriented, its a social science degree. I will have to take a summer program to get me up to speed for basic business classes if I am accepted. (micro-economics, macro-economics, statistics, ect.)

A lot of people hit it on the head. For an undergrad, it matters more of where you go to school than what your choose as major. The same applies to your MBA, but you will have more leeway. And I have seen people who deliberately chose the easiest undergrad major like philosophy or women studies to aim for a 4.0 GPA so that they can go to the top graduate school. It works.

I'm getting my BS in Finance, in my last year now and I can say with complete honesty that I don't really like it. I want to go into law school, so that's the only reason I've stuck with it. But if it turns out that I don't like law, I'll probably just shoot myself and start all over again!

Accounting is an exceptionally strong field to get a degree in. However, the vast majority of people with accounting degrees have zero clue what they're doing. I can't tell you the number of people we've fired due to their complete incompetence on simple accounting protocols (some with 15+ years experience). So, do it if you like it, otherwise you'll be jumping around a lot between companies.

Pros - Accounting is a recession proof industry. 2008 was our best year in 27 years of existence, and 2009 is already blowing 2008's numbers out of the water. We like to call every Presidential election day, "Job insurance day."

Cons - Accounting has a high percentage of alcoholism, drug abuse, and suicide due to the nonstop deadlines. It's high stress and high frustration, depending what specifically you do. If you have to talk to state departments or the IRS, you'll want to murder people.
