I'm definitely a fan of Oakley. My younger brother manages a Sunglass store and he always brings home really awesome sunglasses that the reps give him. Oakley is by far my favorite. I personally have 2 pair for myself. Can't remember the "model" name of them though. >.<

they're just really stylish. I can see why some people don't like them, but for all the talk of knock-offs, I haven't seen anything in any of the stores I've been to that does them right. some are obviously trying, but they just aren't Oakley and never will be. I'd love to find a $50 pair that's perfect for me and doesn't feel cheap, believe me. I'd rather not buy Oakley if I could get the same thing at a better price, I'm far from a brand whore.

    necro buuuump

so I finally took the plunge. I bought two pairs, one $20 pair of aviators from American Eagle for camping, heavy drinking, etc. any time I think they may get lost.

I wasn't impressed with the selection at either of the Oakley stores I went to, but I did run into a pair of Ray-Bans that were fucking awesome. my friend who came with (as I needed a fashion consultant) loved them too, so I went for it. $170 or so but worth every penny when I look in the mirror. I fucking love them.

so yeah... conclusion: Oakley is overrated unless that style really fits you, but Ray-Bans are a timeless classic and completely worth it.

each head shape has specific types of shades that would look good

I'm a gay guy but I figured, when you're spending $200 on what is basically an accessory (let's be honest, I'm not buying them for the eye protection) it's good to have a second opinion.

that's why I bought the Ray-Bans, they were the only pair that both myself and my female friend agreed on - a sure sign they were the right pair. hell anytime you're making a purchase that big you should have a second opinion from someone whose sense of style you trust.

edit: and they are polarized, so that's nice

I bought a pair of custom oakelys a week ago and the frame is on back order until monday but i can't wait to get them, got them polarized as well because I have a feeling I'd regret it after I had them.

My solution to the polarized/nonpolarized was to get a frame that allowed me to change out the lenses really quick and easy. The glasses I have even came with smokey polarized rose non-polarized and clear. They come in very handy during the winter for that reason. I also might get a yellow lens for them too.

I always have purchased more expensive sunglasses. Cheap glasses for one are typically just plastic. The Expensive ones also feature things that I like such as dual anti-reflective surfaces so you dont have light scatter from behind you into your eye. It makes them much easier to look through. They also have scratch resistant surfaces. Even people who try my glasses can tell the difference.

I also purchase expensive glasses because I take care of my shit. I have -2- non visible scratches on my glasses after 8 years. I have also never lost anything.. ever. I honestly can't remember anything that I've ever lost or misplaced.

These are my Maui Jim 'Beachcomber' glasses. bought them in 2001 and I think they still make/sell the exact same pair. Classic

I got a cheap pair of Wayfarer's on Ebay... but I wear normal glasses too, so I just sprung for the transition lenses as well.

All right, halp me out BG!

Since reading this thread I decided to look for a nice pair of sunglasses. My problem is that I don't have much fashion sense for accessories (or much else for that matter). Not usually a problem but I'm currently out of town so no girls to take to get advice and the only gay guy I know is a creepy neighbor.

So I bought this pair of Raybans and was wondering what the sunglass-experts thought. It was between these and the classic Aviators. I leave for vacation Friday so am contemplating exchanging/returning if my fashion sense is way off. So what do yall think? Yay or nay? Keep or exchange?

I vote nay. they're nice but I really don't think they fit your face shape at all. when you're spending that much money on a pair of sunglasses they should look perfect on you.

but that is just me, I'm curious to see what others say.

Thanks, that's the thought I was thinking. I like them but I don't think I like them for $200. I think I'll probably shop around a little more and try to find a pair I value better.

They're ok, they look like well, aviators but I'm not a fan. As far as fitting your face goes, I purchased my glasses based on style and purpose. For instance I purchased a pair of Maui Jim MJ sport polarized glasses for driving and they are big lenses to wrap around my eyes to prevent wind from blowing right into my eyes.

I also recently bought a pair of Oakley custom Glasses that are sport glasses that also wrap around that I use whenever I'm not going out or don't care to be stylish. The reason is they're durable and the frame I got is a Carbon Fibre frame with Orange ear stocks, and with all Oakley sport glasses they have a special padding that as you sweat the glasses tend to grip more. They also have Asian Fitting which allows the frame to sit higher up on your face if you don't like glasses that tend to droop down. At any rate if you don't live or have access to a shop like Solstice or a real sunglasses retailer your best bet is to take a look online and make sure that whatever you buy look good and actually work.

Btw: Both the sunglasses I mentioned were upwards of $150, but they are both polarized lenses for driving purposes.

right... they're ok but is ok really worth $200?

good luck, I've come to the conclusion that sunglasses are the #1 hardest thing to shop for in the world. you can try on hundreds of pairs and still be like "nope... haven't found the right ones yet."

OKkkkk Was at Harrods last weekend to have a look at their sunglass sales.

Guess what I saw flocking around the sunglass counter.

Middle east women in BURKA'S trying on Sunglasses.....

for those that don't know what Burka's are :-

    Can someone tell me why?

So, apparently covering from head to toe in black cloth ala ninja outfit ain't enough, they are starting to cover their eyes too now.

I would guess that the sun gets kind of bright, sometimes.
