certainly possible, and could segue into astor and cody having mini dark passengers next season, but with how Deb is now idk if she would accept Dexter

Don't the kids in the books already have a Dark Passenger? If they do, it could be a decent possibility for a sub/main plot in a later season. (I've never actually read the books, but every Sunday my mom talks about it while we watch the show)

yeah they do, but my point is if Rita is killed (especially in front of the kids) then I can see it being a plot reason for season 5 being about them discovering their dark passengers, and Daddy Dexter teaching them and whatnot. Could be done without her dying, but if she did it would make more sense plot wise, since they haven't shown much sign of it before.

I meant Deb. From a plot point, with her character I can't see Deb just being cool with Dexter, and I can't see her NOT finding out. Something will have to happen to her.

From the interview with an exec producer, they said they don't really use much of the book. The guy hasn't even read any of them, other than the first. Not saying that they won't ever pull ideas from the books, but I wouldn't expect them to either.
