Damn, I guess Canadians have it somewhat easy. I've been to 3 different high schools in my time and not once have I seen a gun being brought to either high schools.

Depending where you are, in Southern Ontario, it's very likely to see weapons in the highschool, whether they're being sold or there to cause harm is a very different story.

I went to high school with 4 buses of kids off the local native reserves in the area, and I know city kids, black, white, or otherwise were pretty much ganged up on in a mob mentality, to the point that in my first month there was a situation where a black kid got in a fight with a native, and all the natives circled him while he fought with the other, shoving him back in, one with a pitbull harassing him.

Everyone else had to step up and put a stop to it, so we had a bit of a race riot and a lock down to classrooms. Though outside media labeled it simply gang violence, it was a very contrasted skintone on one side.

We had to keep friends from the reserve so that nobody messed with us, and of these people, it might not have been handguns, but they could bring anything they wanted in off the buses.

Hunting Knives $10, Machete, $15, Ammunition $10 for shotguns and rifles, I never saw anyone bring in an actual gun, however it still was retardedly dangerous that these were being sold from lockers in the high school literally throwing distance from my front door in a rather calm residential neighbourhood.

Last year, my best friend's 15 year old brother had his face rearranged by 2 kids with brass knuckles for no reason except walking home from school and being white, there isn't much "Black vs. White" Violence here, but Lebanese & Native Reserves seem to harbor hate on anybody otherwise walking alone.

I was lucky to only ever have minor encounters with aggressive shit because of who I hung out with, but there were a couple close encounters where I was cornered by race against larger numbered groups, and got out with friends showing up at the right time to avoid conflict.

my HS here in NC didn't have a gun issue really. No our problem was more a idiots dealing drugs in the middle of class when the teachers had their backs turned. I remember seeing cops coming into class and searching students book bags they suspected of having drugs (i never had them search me cause i kept my nose clean). Had a student once in my math class that i thought just had a book bag full of books for classes. The students had a book bag full of weed he was dealing to the students on campus. Had another guy arrested in the middle of class by the FBI for importing and selling X from England. Now that shit was funny after we heard how he was doing it. Guy was having it hidden inside jars of jelly.

Had a person once too busted by the FBI for using the copiers in the computer lab for counterfeiting a crapload of 100 dollar bills.

The one thing these idiots all had in common-They were all rich white kids that had no need to do any of this. You never really saw any of the regular or poor students in the HS doing that kinda shit.

I can see why. I go to school in a very ghetto town.. I mean like Detroit ghetto. Just this last semester black students caused more problems than I can list in this single post. Most notably was Philosophy when God was brought up. It ended with someone throwing a chair (no bullshit.) and storming out of the room with his home boys.

There was also a really fat black girl who knew magic. As soon as every class would start that bitch would make a HUGE ruckus getting out of the room and some how make one of those really fucking big bags of Lays appear out of thin air. They are not sold on campus and the nearest store that I can think of that has them is about 2 miles off campus. how the fuck did she get those?!

The point is, she would get up EVERY CLASS about 10 minutes in and everyone would have to stop until she came back and sat down because the noise she would make. It got to the point where on the last day me and 3 others called her out.

There are other examples, but honestly I've never seen a white student where I live do this shit. Maybe I don't notice it as much... I'm not really sure. The majority of people in my school are pretty well off white kids but there are a few bad apples. I'm pretty sure some of the kids there are with the rehabilitation shit and are out of jail on the biases they go to school, but I'm not really sure.

I don't blame the teachers at all.

I just finished working on a pilot presentation for a reality tv series, where a "motivational speaker" is bringing suburban whites and inner-city blacks (in St. Louis) together to air their grievances about race. Interesting times.

One of the white ladies was a teacher who taught at a 98% black inner-city school. One of her tearful testimonies was that she had parent-teacher conferences for her 120 students.

3 parents showed up.

Other awesome quotes included "I think it's bullshit that food stamps don't buy toothpaste - some of my students, their breath is so bad I can't even talk to them, I just can't take it."

Kinda brutal to watch actually - and that's just hearing her talk about it secondhand. I can only imagine what it's like to be there.

My high school was pretty "nationally representative" as far as races go (a little short on hispanics but otherwise close) - and we had a 6'4 black principal named Milton McPike Milton McPike - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia who was a former San Francisco 49er.

Basically, from my point of view, his only job was to keep the 10-ish% of the black kids in our school "in line", and he did a -decent- job of that. He knew all their names and was on their asses as best he could, but if he was some little white lady who couldn't gain the respect of the black kids, they would've ran roughshod over our majority-white high school.

It's just...crazy.

I'm studying to be a teacher, and from what I've seen, these "miracle" teaching movies where some white teacher comes into a black school and motivates all these minority students who don't give a shit to suddenly care and give an effort that would beat the pants off the suck up kids in a good school, they don't happen in real life. By high school, most of the students are set in the mindset towards their education that they will maintain for their last 4 years (and any potential post-HS education), barring something extreme like the death of a loved one either motivating them to succeed or killing their energy/drive for anything. I think its something in the culture, where the parents don't pass on to their kids the message of how important education is. Its gotta be hammered home at a young age, cause by 15, if they don't care, they're probably not ever going to care. The 3/120 parents showing up for parent-teacher confrences or open house is very believable for an inner city and/or poorer community, even in good upper-middle class neighborhoods attendance at 50% for one of those at the high school would be considered good.
