Completed this tonight. Excellent game. Proud it was a release day purchase.

    Spoiler: show
I was genuinely scared during maddison's dream sequence. I was really looking over my back in real life and checking around corners before going to bed. Why did I have to play that scene at about 2am, and in game the scene occurs around that time of the night ! D:

I must have missed a scene but why can maddison call jayden after the apartment explosion. When did they swap numbers?

I got a decent result though, all characters lived except the killer lol, and the kid was saved. I was a bit confused about the apartment ethan and maddison buy at the end, it looks nearly the same as maddisons? Bit disappointed that the ending was so short. Felt like the credits took longer to roll than the cutscenes.

During my playthrough I never suspected the Scott as the origami killer. I first thought Ethan was the killer, then I thought his wife was when she came back to the police station. I thought it might also be gordi. I went back to thinking Ethan was the killer when maddison went to the see the old lady because she abruptly gets up and leaves. Even when jayden gathered all the evidence i thought the cop in question was blake ;-/ I only realised it was scott until the scene where he starts burning everything up ;-/

I dont understand how early in the game scott acts half dead with asthma attacks but later in the game he can storm the mansion solo and also beat the crap out of jayden samurai style. I also dont see how he killed the old guy manifred in the typewriter/antique shop when during the scene its as if he literally only walked round the corner for 2-3 seconds. Also when kramer says he owned the construction site why didnt scott go react. And why were his parents living in a caravan on a construction site anyway.

As an "Adventure Game" it did seem a bit low on dialogue-trees. The final conversation between ethan and scott felt a bit weak for example. Also, the split screen camera stuff seemed way underused compared to indigo prophecy. But overall I found the game gripping and I was so glad they kept a sense of realism with no mystical bullshit like the second half of indigo prophecy. Cant wait for quanticdreams next game!

    Spoiler: show
Lastly, I wish there was a way to reverse Ethans love interest. Even though Maddison is a pretty girl, how many of the gay guys wished Jayden could have taken her place in the motel. I loved his accent! :D :D :D.

I felt sad that the good ending involves jayden just going back to work as normal with a head fucked up by drugs/ari ;-(

Yeah I was pretty shocked the she even had the option to call Jayden, then again I didn't exactly know her entire motive was to do a story on Ethan...

This games ability to suck me in from one intense moment to the next is uncanny and I would figure I am not quite halfway through, only complaint is I really wish some of the technical glitches weren't there, it can be distracting sometimes and just sad how one minute the game looks/feels/plays like you are there then you start twitching for no reason or grabbing at a collar that isn't there.

Allright, finished it. Apart from a couple of frustrations it was a mind blowing experience. I loved Indigo Prophecy too and had no doubt about this one.
It sucks you in HARDCORE. I was intending to play it for an hour or so at 11 pm....ended up going to bed at 7 am.

    Spoiler: show
The scene, or should I say...the use of controller where you were beating that "mad" guy was awesome. I held the controller with my right hand and started swinging it, woohoo take that fucker!

There were ssssoooo many "oh fuck, you've got to be kidding me" moments in the game. I was expecting a surprise ending, but....killer was a real surprise.

The only thing that pissed me off was a control related issue. In my game Madison got fried because she turned 180 degrees around when I was just trying to make her kick the door.

Shelby and Madison(seriosuly, first time I drooled on a fucking VG chick) were my favorite characters in the beginning but towards the end I started to like Jayden more.

    And a Warning:

If you haven't finished the game, AVOID random articles and message boards related to it. Story is its strongest part and you wouldn't want it spoiled(assholes are intentionally doing it, Harry Potter v2).

Fucktards even vandalized its Wikipedia page so...yeah, play safe.

    Perfect Crime clarification:

    Spoiler: show

Have Ethan escape the cops in 'On the Loose'. Let everyone else die as noted in the guide.

Ethan lives at the end but is exonerated. Perfect Crime should pop.

In case you missed it: commentary from http://www.penny-arcade.com/

After trying three shops for the game upon our return, I finally tracked one down with copies to spare. I came home to an empty house, family out for the weekend, with nothing to do but play it. I want to stress the extent to which this is something that never happens. I dumped an entire day into the game. Well, not the whole day. I also got pretty drunk. Like I said, the day possessed an uncommon configuration.

When I came back the next day to continue my progress, I navigated the menu incorrectly and deleted my save. It even came up with a dialogue that was like, are you sure you want to do this? I assumed it was talking about something else, I guess. I couldn't imagine that it would be so easy to destroy your progress, and having done so, why I couldn't just resume from the last chapter I'd reached. I thought I had selected Continue, but I had not. I really don't understand it. I mean, this ain't my first time to the rodeo. I know how to navigate a Goddamned menu. Presumably.

By the time I had resolved myself to rebuild seven hours worth of play, the vast preponderance of the world's PlayStation 3 hardware couldn't play that game anyhow. There's Sunday gone. Monday evening, after satisfying his curiosity re: damselflies, I tucked in my heir and went downstairs to care for my virtual sons.

    An interlude:

(When there was an Olive Garden close enough for us to frequent, Gabriel and I did so with great enthusiasm. We were drawn there by its Tuscan authenticity, and also the fact that you could at that time secure an infinite amount of food for four dollars. That struck us as a solid rate of exchange.

Gabriel likes that - when they bring out the check - it is heaped with Andes Mints. He likes to imply, just above the threshold of audible speech, that he will make it "worth their while" if they should bring more than the customary one mint per person. Understand that this is even more ridiculous than it seems: I don't even like Andes Mints. He's already up one mint simply because I'm there.

While he is eating the mint - the first mint at any rate, the first of many - he is folding the tiny foil wrapper into semblance of its previous shape. When it has assumed some facsimile of mintfulness, he will then offer it to you. It's not worth refusing it, it's really not, because the offer will be repeated until you play out your role in his twisted pageant. Unfolding the wrapper, you will discover that no mint is present.

"You dumb fucker," he'll say, unwrapping another mint. "God, you're stupid."

Opening that empty wrapper is what it's like playing through the parts of Heavy Rain you've done before. Virtually drying yourself off with a virtual towel virtually is not an act which endures repetition.)

I put in just enough time to get to the end of the demo, at which point the game hard-locked the system. It's something people often wonder, and now, I've got conclusive proof: A videogame can make you cry.

    (CW)TB out.

    here they come

^That was pretty dull commentary. It was like he was criticizing the psn blackout more than anything. And nothing can excuse his dumbassery for deleting his save file. I don't see his point at all. It felt negative, but certainly not like bad press. And if it was intended as bad press, I hope people can actually read and realize that it really says nothing bad about the game.

Could partially blame the game for highlighting New Game as the first option upon boot-up.

A bit of an oversight on the game dev's parts, especially when we're only allowed one save profile per account on the system.
(makes it harder to experiment long-term results on actions within a chapter since you need to save and continue playing through, but that affects the consistency of your other actions)

Um... there are three separate save slots in the game.

But you need to get him caught the first time? I thought the point of perfect crime is to get him locked in jail on the 2nd time so he gets accused of the crime, and you are talking about the IGN guide, right? But i guess that makes sense since the guide only tells you to get arrested the first time

Getting him arrested the first time will make sure he stays in jail for another ending. It's not necessary for Perfect Crime but it makes it so you don't backtrack as much. Looking at the trophy description, you should get the trophy whether Ethan is locked up or saves Shaun. The key is that Scott gets away with it and everyone else is dead.

so you can get perfect crime if ethan shows up to the wharehouse, madison dies in the fire, and jayden dies fighting shelby at the end? Im doing the perfect crime playthrough now and picking up the last few trophies I don't alrdy have, so that I should platinum at the end. Well I have one more ending after this, but its not far to backtrack after I do perfect crime playthrough.

Just making sure, because I thought u had to get Ethan arrested the 2nd time (since that way he gets stuck in jail).. When he just got arrested on the rooftop (and not in fugitive) you have Jayden help him escape.

Last night I got the Perfect Crime trophy with Ethan saving Shaun.

Just beat the game a little bit ago. I've been trying to get my friends to play it cause this is the type of game everyone should play. Already want to play it again.

Question: For chapter select, if you do one part of the story differently, can you just jump ahead from that point on and continue, or do you basically need to replay all the following chapters for the changes to take effect?

Basically, I redid a scene with Norman and grabbed a clue I didn't notice before, and I jumped forward into the game, and said clue wasn't there. I get the feeling I have to replay an hour's worth of gameplay just to see if said clue makes a difference in the ending. Game doesn't give any indication of which chapters are inconsistent or not when you change the results of another.

A shame there isn't an option to continue the data onto a different save profile, would make my life easier for experimenting. Last thing I want to do are the starting 2-3 hours again which look like they have zero effect on the outcome of the story, although it looks like I have to anyways since the "Interactive Drama" trophy never triggered, which is supposed to ding after the mall near the start.

Anyways, looking forward to playing the game differently the next time through. I first played it the way I would make the decisions IRL, and now I get to do things another way in the name of trophies, as well as seeing how it changes shit.

Also, not sure if it's been discussed, but what is up with...

Ethan's wife/gf/whatever-she-was? My game ending went on as if she never existed, or is that the plothole people were mentioning earlier in the thread that I didn't want to spoiler myself with?

I think the plothole is Ethan blacking out and waking up with the Origami figures. It's never really explained, and I think is used just to make you think he is actually doing it.

It is strange that they don't mention his wife after the beginning of the game and her small time in the police station though.

You will need to replay everything from that point forward for changes to take effect. The game gives you a little notice about "Continuity may not be maintained between chapters" if you jump back into the middle and try to re-save.

Has anyone who pre-ordered gotten The Taxidermist access code e-mailed to them yet? I think today was the day it was supposed to go out.

    As far as endings go...
    Spoiler: show

The one that pops when everyone is alive but you don't find the kid is fucking brutal. As soon as Ethan told Madison he wanted to stay behind at the grave for a minute I knew what was up.

Then again, one of my best friends just shot and killed himself a couple months ago so it resonated a bit more for me.

Answered my own question, I got an e-mail from Amazon.com today with my redemption code. Guess I'm playing more Heavy Rain tonight.
