    uhhmm... I think it depends.

I know when I lived in mesa which is highly mormon, all the non-mormons would make fun of them like crazy.

I think mabye because they believe in something more "plausible" I know mormonism was extremely unknown until word came about that they didn't let black people in.

Would anyone have ever given a shit about this if some rednecks were crying about being banned from Wiki for deleting everything about the Crusades?

2 reasons: Mormonism isn't a blatant pyramid scheme, 2nd, 1 guy, 8 wives, you do the math.

It's not surprising to see that any situation where someone attacks the structure of another persons religion, particularly from some knowledgeable background, that the person being attacked gets made a fool of.

That's one of Dawkin's key points, it's not ok to question someones faith... because it's just... not cool?

People have this feeling that their faith is not something which can be questioned, so they aren't often in a situation to defend it.

I imagine I could show the guys in those youtube videos that their personal beliefs are just as retarded as the ones they were attacking, as could any educated person I would hope.

We just don't do it because it's considered unfair or some shit, fuck that.

I see two guys literally *identical* to those two bikers every so often in my town. They wear the same clothes, same helmets and same backpacks. They were always together and for some reason they just stood out in my mind (partly for being gaijin). I assumed they worked at the same company or something... but always together like that? Never knew, lol

Yeah, they walked into an ambush. What's sad is that I think their faith requires them to leave home for a specified period of time and ride around giving out copies of the Book of Mormon. Many come to Japan and I have NO idea why. Do beware though, trouble far worse than mormons tends to come in two's in Japan also >.>

Jehova's Witnesses are the same way for the most part. They all dress the same and typically walks around town. A rare one was when an entire family of them were driving around and parked outside my house, my car was here and I was listening to music so I was obviously home. But I didn't answer the door when they knocked, they sat outside of our house for 2 hours before they left.

I remember seeing a documentary on how crazy the mormons are at Utah. If you're not in the club then you're pretty much a pariah, even to your family members.

I don't know entirely about the accuracy for this and other related stories, but it's gotten some legit-seeming press lately. Anyways, fucked up shit happens in utah.

As an aside, just kinda thinking out loud about all the scientology things coming up lately. I sincerely don't think the problem rests specifically on the shoulders of religion, I think the broader issue is the tendency for human beings to suspend rational thought and susceptibility to psuedoscience when it presents itself in a way that is appealing.

Honestly, wouldn't you desperately want to believe that you could live decades longer by supplementing your diet with bottles and bottles of herbal supplement pills? It's a billion + dollar market now. I count those sorts of things, along with various spiritual tendencies, belief in ghosts, etc. all under the same banner as the scientology belief system. Scientologists create their own problems by being obscenely financially oriented combined with rather orwellian intimidation tactics (and this is NOT unique to scientology), but there is nothing about the ability of humans to buy into their belief system that surprises me.

Is this something fundamental to humans that as a society we must simply deal with? How does one go about teaching critical thinking and sceptical thought? Can it be learned at a young age without inflaming the sensibilities of the wildly religious? Do we even teach these things in school? Will it make the world a better place?

    I dunno

I bet a lot of them that go to BYU pick Japan for their 2 year mission, though if they can pick places like that it makes it seem like one guy I went to HS with got the sharp end of the stick. He went off to BYU like a good mormon and got shipped off to the Phillipines for 2 years. I haven't heard from him since he first got over there. The whole required to go somewhere foreign for two years as part of the college just screams bullshit to me though.

my ex is a mormon, and we actually talked about dudes on bikes yesterday. they basically have to go out on bikes when they're 19 lol. sux. they can use cars and stuff now though, but a lot of them take bikes. they also have to dress nicely and stuff all the time. they dont get paid at all, and they all go places in groups to where theyre assigned, and yes, they did get assigned to your rinky-dink town. because they aren't paid, they usually are just fed by other mormons in the city that theyre in and stuff. its pretty intense.

theres like a billion rules for them too but i dont know any other than they cant be alone with a woman at her home. s'it

I live in SLC, Utah. I'm not Mormon (I've thrown them out of my house before), but you guys are wrong about them. I don't agree with all of their values, but they're generally pretty nice, reasonable, and tolerant. The bad rap comes mostly from the FLDS church or the random crazies.

My issue with the mormons isn't the people, I agree they're probably the most polite you'll ever meet. The issue is the fact that they try to convert others by traveling around like salesmen, polygamy, the way they exploit women, and my major beef with them is their thoughts towards black people. Recently, there's a passage that's gone public that says black people were made from the bones of demons and the skin of monkeys and the only way for them to go to heaven is as slaves.

It is unfortunate that they've practically ruined poly-type relationships in the eyes of many, including those which don't end in -gamy.
