I lost most of my teeth in Iraq after a RPG explosion knocked me into a conveniently parked car. I had a partial from the army doctor for a few years and then about 3 months ago got two more teeth knocked out during a sparring session. So I decided to get a full top denture and keep my bottom partial. I got the remainder of my teeth pulled about a week ago and went Friday and got a denture made from Affordable Denture. (place where they do same-day dentures) I am just using it to get by until my real dentist gets me a permanent denture. It will be 6 weeks until he'll even fit me for one...so my gums recede and stabilize...then it'll be another 3 weeks until he gets it in. I couldn't go 9 weeks without teeth, so I went to this place just to get a cheap "filler" set.

I don't know anyone with dentures to talk to about this so I'm posting on here in the unlikely hope that one of you has dentures or experience with them. I am not sure if this one I got is just really cheaply made or if they are all this uncomfortable. I was told it would take some getting adjusted to, but this is insane. I still can't really eat with them, they are painful to put in and take out, they feel like they're just overall too big...almost bucktoothed if that makes sense. It is to the point that I'm thinking about trimming them myself to see if I can make them comfortable enough to wear. As it is, I still haven't been able to eat with them without almost choking on my food. So...anyone out there have any advice?

Could always take them out when you eat? But other than that you might be shit out of luck until your real set comes in. My father had dentures and he said that they never felt quite right.

He's getting this tooth implant setup done on his lower jaw at I think around $1500 per tooth. Expensive, painful, and takes months to do but when you only have 7 teeth left and only 32 years old wearing dentures you think of the long term benefits.

Yeah, I'd love to have implants...but i work for a non-profit group and am not exactly wealthy. I can justify paying 2k or so for good dentures, I cannot justify paying 20k or more for it though.

I am taking them out to eat right now, but you'd be surprised how little your food options are when you can't chew due to no upper teeth. I am so sick of mashed potatoes I don't even wanna talk about it. I am in pretty good shape and workout daily, been working on a weight cut to see how I feel at 170 to fight. (I walk around at 210~) Going to have to put the cut on hold and just worry about maintaining weight without being able to keep my protein intake as high as I'd like.

I really hope that these are just shitty dentures and the ones I get from my dentist are much better, because otherwise I'm doomed to putting my food in the blender. lol

Not the same though man...I can drink all the broken down protein in the world, but nothing substitutes real animal protein. I found that if i shredded chicken enough, i can eat it. I really think, after reading some more online, that this place is just shitty and I should have done more homework on it first. I think I'm going to try and alter them a little bit and see what I come up with. (famous last words)

Well, don't take this the wrong way, and obviously you understand since they're just temps, but "1 hour" is more of a bad sign than good when it comes to major medical equipment heh... I dunno if there's a better temporary idea, but I would hope that's the main issue.


Other things... your options are still fairly decent without being able to chew. You can get a cheeseburger or whatever to the point you can drink it through a straw, which should be plenty chewed, just with a good blender. (include the bun, and if it's not enough mix in french fries)


My similar experience was with my jaw wired shut, so I had to get stuff smaller than that. You said you're sick of mashed potatoes, so this may not help, but my "favorite" food during the time was instant mashed potatoes made with milk instead of water, and then a whole bunch of chicken broth to basically make it a liquid. Carried that shit in a thermos everywhere I went lol.

Also, Ensure is pretty good >.>

My gramps used to have dentures. He'd always give us the "evil eye" and pop out the lower set, kinda so it looked like he had a serious underbite.

maybe try some indian food in the meantime? curries are pretty soft and liquid-y with lots 'o flavor. as for meat... hmm, ground beef? not in patties, just in little bits in soup/curry/whatever.

edit: oh, forgot to mention tofu. I know you said something about animal protein, but tofu seems to be about the softest kind of protein you can eat like regular food.

VA paid for the partial...they did their part as far as they are concerned. I think I can eat ground beef, it's broken up small enough...maybe I'll try and mix that in some potatoes today. Oddly enough tofu is something I have access to in a million ways...everyone where I work is vegan except me and my fiance. lol

@ Plow: I figured they weren't the best things ever, but was hoping for something at least wearable since it's the most popular place in the US to get dentures now. I just feel bad now for all the people that can't afford to go anywhere else and are stuck with these things. The instant potatoes and broth sounds good...might try that tonight.

2 weeks ago, got into a good fight at work and last thursday had 4 teeth removed from my left side, and 2 from my right side of my mouth.

Living off mashed potatoes and frappes for the last few days sucks, no idea how you could do it for so long.

As far as instant potatoes go, if you are looking to make them on the cheap, you could use 1 or 2 chicken flavored bullion cubes instead of broth. I've done it a few times, and when you use a little too much milk and butter, those instant 'chicken flavored' potatoes are fantastic. Works equally well with white rice too, if you cook it long enough. That should also be soft enough for you to chew as well.

Yeah, we tend to get carried away sparring. I do like to train hard, and I'm just starting to come back from a couple injuries that had me sidelined for a little over a year so I really should be taking it easier. I went for a shot from too far away and he saw it and was going to just bring up his knee to catch me...I ended up getting kneed in the face and then a right cross that finished the job. He was concerned, I told him not to worry about it, shit happens. Teach me to shoot from that far again. lol

By the way, thanks for serving noble. I would also take into consideration the possible issues if you cut the teeth yourself. As much as they suck, they were made by professionals. If you try to alter them you could end up causing more damage than intended. You could even give yourself a snaggletooth! On the plus side, you said it was only going to be six weeks until your dentist comes up with the permanent replacement? You may just be stuck dealing with it for now but I would probably trust the dentist's work more than Affordable Denture. Hope it gets better for you dood.

I was more thinking about trimming the edges of the teeth where they meet the gum line, since that is where it's hurting. You are correct though, I am a little scared to mess with them for fear that I mess 'em up and am SOL for 6 weeks or so...not that they're doing me much good atm anyway. One of the reasons I got them was because we're visiting my fiance's family in PA this month and it's the first time they've seen me in person, so I'd like to not be toothless. lol

Yeah I remember sparring people that no control. Sometimes shit happends like with what happend to Noble too. I broke my teacher's nose cause he dodged into a roundhouse.

I always wear my mouthpiece, but those are more for concussion reasons than protecting your teeth. Mine came out when I took my mouthpiece out...just kinda fell out. lol

I am sitting here looking at them atm and trying to see what I'm going to alter and plan it out, so I have less chances of fucking it up. If it is FUBAR when I'm done I'll post fail-pics.

Call your dentist to see if the pain will subside or if there are other options. DIY stuff like that never ends well.

btw, I'd chip in a couple hundred on a BG donation for some new bling for your gums. Sucks you're dealing with that right now.
