Awesome!
It's official that L4D1 has been forgotten.
Official: No new content in the making for L4D1 - Steam Users' Forums
Make sure you read the post and articles before going "hurrr dat not ofishul".
While it certainly does make it appear that way it does not actually say it.
EDIT: To clarify, while the fact that, despite the outrage over lack of content, the only thing they mention is SDK etc is certainly not looking good, there is a difference between not announcing DLC, and announcing there will be no DLC.
Here's my main issue. And probably the main reason why I will not buy the sequel, at least not for a long time. I just plunked down sixty dollars and bought L4D when it first came out. Valve said they would treat L4D like they did with TF. Now they are releasing a sequel, which let's be honest, means L4D is going to be left out in the cold. My main issue is that they didn't just decide to up and make the sequel. They probably immediately began work on it after L4D hit the shelves. I have a very hard time believing that Valve was going to follow through with what they said. Maybe I'm just being an idiot. Maybe I'm right. Regardless I will probably not be picking up the sequel for a long time.
I understand that point, however am I the only one who thought L4D was worth is price even without updates? i easily have played 100 hoursish, and to me that is a great bargain compared to most games these days where even rpgs are 25 hours or so
Oh I won't disagree. L4D was well worth the money spent. My whole train of thought is that I kind of feel like as a consumer I was lied to. Ongoing support for L4D with content was promised by Valve. One small update/content package and now I've read several articles claiming no other content being added since they are focusing on L4D2. Now what or won't happen, I don't know.
What happens when I buy L4D2 after they promise support and additional content being added? Will they be following through on what they have promised? Or is it going to be one and done so they can work on L4D3?
It's just disappointing because the primary reasons I got L4D was the fact that it's an online zombie game that had the potential to get the same amount of TLC that Team Fortress does. Now it's up in the air if there will be anything else added.
Like I said I understand that as a consumer feeling lied to is a bitch, but I don't see the point in raising a stink about it and not buying the sequel. No offense but if any other company than Valve had done this no one would care. I mean I would rather have a new iteration of L4D each year than a new madden/guitar hero/what have you. but not nearly as many people care about those 'sequels' even though they are just as quick and imo offer less new content. My thinking is, dissappointed in their lack of updates or not, I don't want to miss out on the fun of a new game, due to being butthurt.
I understand the pov from people who feel they were lied to about the additional content, but I will be picking this up on day 1. As a consumer there wasn't a better value for my dollar then L4D, I played countless hours both in versus and online campaign and had a blast doing it. I am not going to sit here and argue and say wait til Valve actually confirms there will be no additional content added for L4D because I understand the probability of them making any more content is very low with L4D2 coming out this year, but that is ok with me. We got 1 free dlc, with an additional 2 vs campaigns and a new survival mode, granted I believe the 2 vs levels should have came with the game originally but it is nice to finally have them, and they didn't cost anything so no harm no foul really. How much additional content for L4D1 would be enough to justify the making of a sequel? An additonal campaign & versus level? Additional weapons/modes/Infected? I would rather have a sequel to L4D this year with 5 completely new campaigns, new characters, new AI director, new weapons & zombies, then having them focus on putting out little bits of content every 4-6 months and delaying further the timeframe of a sequel even coming out. They are a business and on that front they made the smart decision. How many times do people on this forum rage because a sequel to a new franchise or an existing one takes 2-5 years before it comes out? myself included. I understand being pissed because they felt lied to but if you can get over the butthurt from that and compare the amount of play time you got for your dollar on L4D in comparison to the games you have played recently and are anxiously awaiting there sequel, objectively can you say you shouldn't or don't want to purchase L4D2? Overall you get a brand new game with everything you wanted + more from the additional content and hundreds of hours of gameplay for $60, I don't see anyone losing out on that deal, esp. when I know a lot of people who purchased L4D for half price. It's nice to get free stuff but noone here purchased L4D and loved it based on the fact they were going to get free additions to it, you bought and enjoyed it because of what the game was and still will be.
Oh I'm sure I'll buy it. But I will definitely not be buying new, or anytime soon after it comes out. Part of the reason is three of my friends picked it up as well so we could all play together(we all love zombies long story short.) Which the concept of them constantly maintaining/upgrading the game, we were all sold on it. I disagree with what you're saying but I understand your point.
The difference between another company doing something like this is that none of them(with the exception of Bethesda) announce they will continue to upgrade their games via downloadable content. It's actually kind of surprising but there are very few companies that will announce upon release that they will offer extensive downloadable content.
In the end I will get it. But I will not be getting it until it takes a drastic price drop from being out for so long.
arch sums up my thoughts pretty well
I see your point, I probably should have said, I purchased this game at launch with no expectations of additional content the same as a bunch of the people I play with, after playing it and loving it so much we of course hoped for DL content. I also think from Valve's pov they really didn't kow L4D would be this big, a lot of zombie/horror games fail horribly. They look fun but usually end up being meh, I don't think they could forsee L4D being this popular and as such they want to not only capitalize on it financially but at the same time give the players the amount of content that they want. I don't know many people who have played L4D and didn't love it and put 100+ online into it, for me that justifies my $60 anything else they gave us for free is just icing on the cake.
I am going to wait and see if the original content from L4D will be included in L4D2 if they do another orange box type deal where they are packaged together in one box for the same $50 and you can access all of the original L4D content from the L4D2 disk then it will be really worthwhile and done right. There is no reason to have the old campaigns and characters separate from the new campaigns and characters.
I will say that despite my reservations about L4D2, it's awesome to see so many zombie games coming out in the future.
^ First link is good news and definatly worth reading, They want to include being able to play all of the original L4D stuff in the sequel and are working out a way to do so, also there vision for the series to come together at the end sounds awesome, nay-sayers should read what they had to say.
I haven't played Valve games on PC for years, and subsequently, I guess I don't understand the audacity of the people so willing to hate on Valve for the decision of L4D2. I do know it's odd, and I'm aware enough of this developer and the industry in general that I did find the L4D2 announcement a bit surprising to say the least. Two games of the same franchise being released within a year of one another... is obviously not a common trend for Valve, but why the hate?
While I did find it odd, and yes it is easy to give Valve shit if it has another franchise that one may want to see again before another L4D game, I'm going to put my trust in the developer, especially this one. I don't see how it's so hard for fans to realize that Valve liked L4D enough (and liked fans' reactions to the game) to give it a more thorough effort now; that's all L4D2 is. L4D1 was a CS mod, a really fun mod, and one Valve tuned for years in development, but it was undoubtedly flawed in multiple ways, and I don't think they really knew what they had until it was released. (I suppose the fact it's a mod backs up the importance/value of further toying with a title for years after its release, which is part of the idiots' complaints, I know.) L4D1 is a great concept and superb, quality multiplayer fun, but now Valve wants to refine this concept? Fine by me.. I'll reserve any serious hating until I actually play L4D2.
I guess Valve has too many cheap fans who have been spoiled with PC freeness for a solid part of 2 decades. I'm not wealthy, but money is just money.. L4D2 may or may not be worth yours, but it will be well worth $60. L4D1 was worth $60. An eighth of quality pot is worth $60, and that lasts 10 days; it took me 3 months to 100% L4D1. But I'm a console faggot willing to pay well for games, and yes DLC too. PC for Diablo/FF MMOs only. >_>;
I'll buy this mostly on the premise that they're breaking up camping tactics. When I first bought the game and everyone was new, tactics were new and people didn't know the best camping corners for every horde or crescendo event. Valve said they were going to try and break that up. It was thrilling on panic events at first, now they're just an annoyance even with melee fatigue.
I know fully well that given the people I typically play with and my own playstyle we'll have the maps memorized and expert tactics for whatever path the director decides to give us, but still... breaking up the "okay, crescendo, get in the corner or rush to that closet" will make the experience more fun and replayable.
