    video card dead?

before i call my bro to look over my pc, i figured i might as well ask them tech gurus at bg

the day before yesterday, i got off work and was hella ready to pimp up my char with blm af hat. turned on pc, went to wash my face/hands and came back with my screen fucked up. you could see the desktop but there were 4 lines visable on the screen disoriented with lil pink pixels dancin around. soon after, the screen turned black... although my moniter was still on. wondering wtf, i rebooted and it did the same thing after about 3 minutes.

i'm thinking either the video card is fubar'd or somethin's wrong with the LCD... but can't really tell. the PC turns on fine but starts fucking up after about 3 minutes once windowsXP loads.

ive tried unplugging the LCD and replugging/booting up PC but does the same shit again.

so... what u make of this my bros? do i need to get a new gfxcard?

holy shit, im so fucked lol
so... if i were to buy a new vcard, would i have to check my case/other components to make sure its compatable or something? it was a nvidia geforce FX 5900, and im thinking of getting a nvidia 9600 or something similar... it'd be no problem just switching it out, right?

Sounds like the cooling fan on the card is shot and needs to be replaced, if that card has a fan on it.

But in any case, the FX5900 is an old card and you might as well go for something a bit newer at this point. Assuming it's an AGP 8x card here's a prospective replacement:

    Newegg.com - Open Box: SAPPHIRE 100228L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card

(Note that this is an open box - I picked it 'cuz it'll save you some money, about $35 off the top. The new item is here for $105 and has free shipping. There's also a $10 mail-in rebate.)

AGP is pretty much chisel and rock. If you have compatible hardware, just get a cheap motherboard with PCI-E support. I'm sure you can find a card+motherboard combo for under $120.
