Obama signed a proclamation Monday that declares the month of June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride month.
“LGBT Americans have made and continue to make great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society,” Obama said, adding that he is “proud to be the first president to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an administration.”
Even though the LGBT community has made progress in recent years, Obama said in the proclamation “there is more work to be done.”
Obama said he would continue to support measures that would support civil unions and rights for LGBT couples. He also said he would work to put an end to the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and ban discrimination in the workplace as well as ensure adoption rights.
