The kick started the second his foot left the ground, it's an upwards kick, kinda like the start of an axe kick but with his body twisted so the heel is on the inside, not outside.

Easiest way to avoid getting up tilted when you're being scared into getting hit by it:

Stand near the end of the stage, where snake typically traps you but stand about 4 steps away from the ledge. When snake walks up to you, hold your shield. Don't roll, don't dodge, dont run towards him, dont jump forward. Hold it, if at ANY time you need to drop your shield, you roll or run backward. If you need to jump backward you don't statr with a jump, you start with running away THEN jump. But otherwise you want to hug the ledge, now snake has to back off if he doesnt want to get aethered. If you're not ike this sitll works, just keep in mind that if snake is smart he'll attempt to edgeguard with full hopped nair. Since I'm not smart I'll always pull a nade first to cover any low attacking recovery so you can just jump over that.
