Getting to the bottom of the Eminem-Bruno incident

We hereby open the first session of The Eminem-Bruno Commission Report. What really happened? Who knew what? We are through the looking glass, people. There may be conspiracy afoot. Or, as some insist, there is no conspiracy and the hilarious fracas we saw Sunday at the MTV Movie Awards between a Detroit rapper and fictional Austrian was as genuine as it appeared.

Or didn't.

These are the facts: Sacha Baron Cohen, resplendent in feathered wings, in character as the flamboyantly gay Bruno, hovered over the audience on a harness. As he reached the section where Eminem sat, he claimed to experience mechanical failure and asked to be lowered. He was lowered--upside down and into the lap of Eminem. Cohen wore only a harness on his buttocks, which brushed close to the face of the famously angry rapper, who protested: "Are you serious!" Eminem then stood and walked out of the award show with his entourage.


The Case Against Orchestration: 1. Eminem's look of disgust. ("8 Mile" was good, but he's not that good of an actor.) 2. Eminem has a storied history of flying off the handle (his mom, his ex-wife, Moby, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog ). 3. Why would a rapper who has been accused many times of being homophobic help stage a prank that would do nothing to dissuade those allegations? 4. He was not wearing a microphone; Cohen was. 5. Eminem knew it was going to happen but didn't know how or that Cohen would be partly naked, and his anger was real. (Consider the Pam Anderson Precedent: She was abducted by Cohen in "Borat" but subsequent investigation revealed she was, at least in part, aware something would happen. That said, the investigation concluded she had no idea it would have gone as far as kidnapping. The investigators? MTV News.)

The Case for Orchestration: 1. E! Online is reporting that Eminem knew Cohen would fall on him, but didn't know about the bare butt. The (unnamed) source of this detail also let slip that the rapper stayed backstage in his trailer for the rest of the show. 2. Eminem sounded as if he was wearing a microphone. 3. Having looked humorless at the Video Music Awards a few years ago after being accosted by Triumph, Eminem was parodying himself. 4. The Los Angeles Times found it fishy that cameramen were in excellent position to record Eminem storming out. 5. We asked MTV to comment. They would not comment--and if it was spontaneous, wouldn't they offer it as a great example of how "anything can happen at the MTV Movie Awards"?

Conclusion: Orchestrated. But Eminem didn't know about the bare-backed nudity and, embarrassed, his anger was genuine.

Still meh. If you watched the show this past Sunday they panned to Eminem several times before SBC was lowered from the wires.

My wife even said "Why do they keep panning to Eminem? Is he about to preform?" and bam it happened.
