The whole things reminds me of Final Fantasy II. You had a skill level for each weapon and spell, which leveled up instead of the character. The character's stats increased based on what you used in battle.

In Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced, you learned spells and abilities from the weapons and armour you had equipped, just like in Final Fantasy IX.

from IGN: E3 2009: Final Fantasy XIV - What We KnowDoes it have a direct connection to Final Fantasy XI?
In some ways, yes it does. Not only does it share the same development team as the FF11, but the game will also allow players to create a character that is similar to their current Final Fantasy XI. Square Enix has also revealed to IGN that it is currently finding a solution that will let you transfer your character's names from FFXI to FFXIV .
What modern day MMOs have influenced the design and direction of FFXIV?
In addition to the team's original work on Final Fantasy XI, World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online have been three recent games that have had some pull, but the FFXI community's feedback has been the most important factor in its design.
When is it coming out and when is the beta?
The game will come out in 2010, and after Final Fantasy XIII which is scheduled for spring of the same year. Beta plans are still being finalized, but that the plan is to have a longer beta period than that of FFXI (which had a beta of about 3-4 months).
I don't know, I'm always in favor of more customization options. If the weapons were all level one, or if they were based on what abilities you already knew instead of job level, that could be really fun. Like, we're both black mages, but my guy casts strong single-target fire spells while yours does slightly weaker AOE lightning.
More info!
The world will be called Hadeln, Eorzea is just the name of the continent.
They will add in some Science Fiction element like those in FF10 and FF13 on this game.
No selling in-game item planned.
There will be High Level job system. (?) Monk>Master? lol
Battle system will be focusing more on real time. Timing will be a very important factor.
Many Vs Many.. = Mob will be party to fight the player too. More cooperative mobs like the sin hunter sisters?
That's all so far.. taken and translated from a jp site http://www.4gamer.net/games/092/G009287/20090604058/
I am so sold on this game. Just finding out there might not be experience points makes me feel all tingly inside.
(The MMO vs game, player entitlement vs criticism debate should be done in another thread - which I eagerly await if anyone dares to make it.)
(And to Sonomaa about the question to the mods thread/ffxiv advanced section - you should know I am always the coolest motherfucker in the room, I ain't mad.)
hoping for some better pvp action :/ which is going to suck if they dont have regional servers.
Also hoping that certain achievements get moved over in some way not directly (ie maat's cap, relics, mythics, event based stuff) like as no benefit items just trophies.
Reading so much of this makes me just dont wanna play the new FF game at all, considering how stupid the players (many of you all) really are.
