A defense rating has been in every RPG game, ever.
A form of magical, elemental damage has been in every Final Fantasy game.

You don't want an RPG, you want hack n slash with pretty models, FF13vs is over there ====>
For anyone keeping score at home, forms of both haste and utsu have been in since the original FF (not FF2 as the poster suggests).

Haste was called 'Fast' in the original FF and was broken as hell. It doubled the # of hits on each attack. Using this spell, a properly leveled Master (read: Monk) could one-shot the end boss.

Utsusemi was also in the game as a spell called 'Ruse'. Rather than absorbing hits, Ruse increased the caster's evasion. The broken aspect of Ruse was that it stacked with itself. By repeatedly casting Ruse, you could get to a point where the enemy would miss almost 100% of the time.

tl:dr version: Utsu and haste have been a part of FF from the original Final Fantasy, not FF2.

Even though speed would be better if there is a regional server (not that it will happen for Australia anyway), I still prefer one big server with everyone on it.

Even though I am in Australia my working hours don't allow me to play with Australian players. I end up playing mostly with JP players. So I'd rather have the flexibility of playing with people from different countries so that I can actually do something during the quiet Australian hours.

I don't recall "Fast" or "Ruse" from the original FF, simply because I was 8 when I played it on my NES.

IIRC the NA game was substantially different from the the JP, you may be referring to the re-port to ps1/ps2 of these games. Thank you for the clarification.

I don't want regional servers but I'd deal with language servers. So many of my XI friends are or have been international, it's one of the things I like the most. Sure, I want to kill someone when Maintenance is on, as it's invariably in EU primetime but I'd rather miss a few hours than miss out on some of the really nice peeps I've met.

Playing on an EU server would be easier for events but I'd miss the diversity.

I think on the remade versions they were called Haste and Invisible. Invisible rose your evasion and by casting it alot it made stuff miss all the time.

So the beta plans are being finalized? I don't know about anybody else, but to me finalized means the second and third drafts have been made and the final copy is being proofread for the tenth time.

It has me all giddy inside. Would be awesome if we can get hands on the beta for XIV before XIII is released in Japan.

Its really dumb that I can't post this in advanced where there seems to be a little more discussion happening, but oh well. Based on the JP interview, I have noticed a few things (I'm was a Japanese Major btw).

They are not sure if the same classes will all be in FFXIV. Tanaka said that they felt that the current Job system in FFXI is too big, and that they wanted to focus it a bit. When asked if classes like WAR and PLD would reappear, SE was dodgey.

The origonal idea they wanted to incorporate was that you could enter your mog house in FFXI, and exit to FFXIV if you wanted. So the FFXI community could seamlessly go between the two games, linkshells running events on both FFXI and FFXIV if they wanted. However, they said it was too hard to implement ^^; (ps3 limitations anyone? j/k)

They didn't go too far into the battle system, but they said that they wanted a much more real-time type of play, that focuses on timing more (skill chains and MB?) They also mentioned that they wanted solo play to be much more possible, but wanted to make it so everyone will still want to party.

The last bit about the beta test I had a hard time understanding, and can't be bothered to translate it here at work, but it did say that the system requirements for the game are going to be higher than FFXI (duh) and hope that it will be competetive graphically five years in the furture. (Really didn't get much from that, maybe elmer can help us out lol)

The interviewer wanted to know how many worlds (servers) are planned for FFXIV and the guy basically said that they wanted to complete the Beta, and see how FFXI is doing before they decide.

They repeatedly said throughout the interview that they would love to see FFXI continue seperately from FFXIV, and that people concerned about not wanting to go to FFXIV should stay in FFXI, and if they feel they want something new, go on over to FFXIV.

Sorry in advance if anyone calls me out for my translation! Better than google translate or whatever people use I hope at least lol

I wasn't trying to call you out or say 'omg lolthisguy it was ff not ff2lulz'
I merely wanted to inform those that were unaware in order to aid in the proliferation of accurate info.

My post was referring to the original 8-bit Final Fantasy for the NES (US version). I am not as familiar with the remakes.

If I get stuck with Dutch/Belgian/French/German/Spanish/Italian players I might just have to kill myself.

I'm dying for more information on this game. I was already looking forward to SW:TOR but now with this.... this is just too much for me to handle lol.

Really hope SE doesn't delay in feeding us information; the speculation in the advanced thread is starting to rot my mind.

The original Japanese text said Blink and Haste. because you can fit those in four characters in Japanese text. The names were different in the NA release because they were still limited to four text characters on the screen. That's why we didn't shift over to the Japanese spell naming system until Final Fantasy VIII, because they didn't want to recode the games as much as would be needed to fit the full names on the screen, or they couldn't actually do it with the limitations of the amount of memory the consoles had, plus localization in those days wasn't done as well as it is now. The Japanese spell names have always been consistent.

Blink/Image in Final Fantasy V is when it started absorbing a set number of physical hits, ala shadows.
