this is the start of the answer, th elong and short of it is american versus european attitudes

in europe you will literally see a topless woman, if not completely nude, advertising for a washing machine (sex sells)

I was in Germany about 7 summers ago and the movies were still dubbed over in german, as well as being censored for violence. I don't know if they simply bring over the english versions now due to spread in english-speaking around the world or not but ultimately, we're desensitized to violence and they are desensitized to sex and seem to censor it accordingly.

I don't know why - but it bugs me. I was in a school today, very very prim and proper, high standards, delightful kids - but one of them got caught in the family jewels like happens to boys occasionally at break and was sprawling on the yard... so I went up to them to hear him loudly exclaiming to his friends "I'll never be able to have children noooow"... I just asked him if he was ok and got a "you heard that didn't you Miss" from him and he got up and walked off. I was cracking up laughing at it because it was very funny how it happened (sure it wasn't for the lad who got smacked in the nuts but still), and was telling one of the staff about it - she was utterly horrified that "he shouldn't know about things like that!" The kid was about 11 - they've already HAD the very basic plumbing talk by then - it seriously was no big deal that he knows that his knob has something to do with babies - but zomg moral outcry!

Sex is more personal and the fetishes and taboos are much more alienating than seeing a person's head implode.

Anyone here take sociology? Remember the part where there's a comparison between countries' 'safe personal distances'? Like how close someone will get to you to shake your hand or whatever or how they greet you?

Think of Borat meeting those Southern cultured people and kissing everyone. They obliged because they were being respectful but imagine greeting everyday people like that.

I can't speak for all of Europe, but my wife is from Spain, and it's heavily catholic. She said she didn't know a thing about sex or reproduction until she was like, 14.

In seriousness, Wafik hit it on the head, but 200+ years of having one of the more fucked up cultures on the planet doesn't help either.

If you see an asshole at school giving you a hard time, it's ok to let him know you aren't going to put up with his shit by punching him in front of everyone right then and there.

If you see a hottie at school giving you a sexy look, it's not ok to let her know you're interested by fucking her in front of everyone right then and there.

Eh, not really. Christianity is pretty much dying/dead here. Sex isn't very much themed here but treated as 'normal' (within boundaries). It's not being overly banhammered by parents, which is probably why 11-year-olds giving blowjobs as being goodbye kisses (see other topic) isn't much of a phenomenom here.

Germany's a pretty terrible example, it's probably the most censor-happy country in the world after North Korea. The rest of Europe doesn't censor nearly as much (way less than America, actually).

Sex is more of an instinct thing I think, any sort of emphasis (a sex scene or a naked girl) could drive the curiosity and the urge to try it. Even as adults; you see a sex scene it can make you wanna do things, lol. (legally......)

I don't think violence has the same effects. Violence has a high chance in scaring kids. I mean sure, a couple of kids can go out trying to harm people cus they saw it on TV.
But just relating this to what mizango said: his daughter knows where babies come from and she knows why people kiss. Then this could also be done with violence no? educate your children that violence is wrong, and evil.
Like i read GTA getting banned in Australia cus 2-3 kids committed crimes that were related to GTA's influence...2-3 kids only isn't really a big deal..I think the problem falls with their parents and not the game..other kids in the world are fine with it. but sex; i think has a greater impact on people.

I'm just relating this to my childhood.
I watched evil dead in Sweden when i was a kid when i went there (it was banned in the UAE) and I'm not joking but, for 3 years every time i go to the bathroom ; I'd let my little brother stand outside and speaks to me.

I once watched a sex scene; just one...and it led me to play "doctor" with the neighbor's daughter.

I think both should be considered harmful for children - If/when i get children i'm planning on not letting my kid watch too much T.V; whatever happened to sports and physical activities? if he does watch T.V its going to be supervised (no violence and no sex)
and again, it all depends on the parents how they portray what the kid is watching.

Dude, I don't know how it is over there, but in America the guys in sports clubs and athletics in general get 10 times the tail growing up than the kids who stayed at home and watched TV.

vs getting Gwen Stefani to sing about wanting to have your baby

I think the winner here is clear.
