    I myself have a 5th gen ipod video (30gb)

When I originally owned it, after about 2 years for some reason it jsut would not turn on anymore and would not be recognized by any computer. It was literally dead. So i dished out the 160 or whatever to mail it to apple to get it repaired (it was a Christmas gift with an inscription on it)

It's been working great for me now.

The only major issue I have with it is I have a hard time finding an FM Transmitter that wants to work reliably with it. My car is a 97' pontiac, and does not have a jack in it to connect a music device to it, so I have to rely on CDs or an FM transmitter to listen to music in my car.

Any body know of any good FM transmitters?

I've been through about four iPods so far in my music-listening career, and none of them have broken or had any problems whatsoever (one was lost, three were stolen). I'm currently using a fifth-generation Classic with 160GB of storage, and I can't recommend it enough. I have multiple seasons of five different TV shows on it, as well as over 7,000 songs (pirated, by the way, which is as others have said is not an issue), and I've barely put a dent in it's HD. Besides that, the interface is great, and the damn thing works. I definitely recommend getting an iPod.

I know it seems like half this thread is just people saying how their Ipods last a while but I'll add another post to it.

I grabbed an ipod when it first came out and to this day I still have it. Just last month I picked up a new ipod touch despite the fact that my old one is still in perfect condition. I dropped that mofo I don't know how many times. The best piece of equipment I've ever owned.

I have an ipod, none of the music or video on it is legit, all pirated, I also don't touch Itunes, I use a program that goes directly into the ipod folder called sharepod, and any computer that can use ipod like a hard drive (which is almost all computers) can access the program as it's on the pod itself, and then continue to drag and drop and also move music both ways (to and from the pod).

Don't bother with a touch, if you're gonna get a touch you may as well just get the phone. The touch is a phoneless iphone and also a waste of money.

Classic video ipod or gtfo. I can't stand macs but I do have an ipod and iphone, iphone was a gift, ipod was a purchase, don't leave home without either one! BTW : Those earbud things that they're handing out now SUCK ASS, look for proper classic earphones.

Also another note : watch your pod, it has a high rate of being stolen

I got a Zune Vision for x-mas a few years ago. Looked nice but I think it was a defect and I never got it to work or update on any computer.

Oh well, my iPod mini is a tank and my nano is perfect for running/working out.

I decided to get a black 120gb iPod Classic today.

I'm reliably informed that the iTouch is a pile of shit (and my impression was also that it looks like an iPhone without a phone), the Nano is far too small for my likings and I've always felt that whoever designed the Shuffle should be shot. The Archos looks pretty fucking impressive but it's way more than I wish to spend on just wanting to play MP3s. I realize that's missing the point of it but I'm not looking for all that just yet. Hell, I don't even really care that the iPod can play videos.

It ended up being a close call with the Creative Zen but the iPod won when it turned out to be only a little more expensive for 88gb more space. That and when an old work mate showed me his four years ago, I remember at least being pretty impressed with the slick visuals and layout.

Wafik, I'll look into that program because I was hoping to completely avoid using iTunes and this seems a pretty good way. Here's hoping it's a well coded piece of software that doesn't take seconds to scroll through vast amounts of music as Sony's Connect did. One thing that appeals to me about the iPod is being able to see the album covers on the unit itself; is this something SharePod can do or is it something I'd need to use iTunes for?

Once again, thanks to everyone for the advice.

When I got mine, there was no 16GB iPhone.

8GB is not enough for the amount of music I like to cart around with me.

    QED...

Replying mainly for anyone else who might be looking for advice in this thread.

I have a first gen iTouch, and I've had zero problems with it. Battery life remains respectable, UI is spectacular, ability to whore wireless is quite amazing (I've actually had my butt saved a couple times in areas with no Edge/3G service for my phone because I could hop on unsecured wireless with my Touch and get directions).

I've not gone hunting around every corner of the internet looking for lists of why the iTouch is a piece of shit, but in a year and a half of regular use I've had no problems whatsoever.

Admittedly, it is pretty much an iPhone minus the phone, and with the strong possibility of a 32GB iPhone on the way it gets even harder to justify, but at least for now it does offer more storage than an iPhone for people who don't really need the phone part (like me - company provides a cell phone and I don't make enough personal use of it for them to get bent out of shape).

I probably wouldn't have bought mine if I'd not gotten employee pricing, but living with one has me totally sold on the UI and features, and I would be stupid enough to spend the premium on another (though I'd also be tempted by a 32GB iPhone, and consider dealing with the hassle of 2 cell phones).

I always sat back and said iPods were overpriced and paying for the brand name - then I finally gave in and bought an 80gig classic (I fail to see the point of paying what you do for the Nanos with naff all storage on them). Shoved all my collected music and vids on there and it's had almost daily use since - usually in the car with an FM transmitter (I use the iTrip one cos my old one got nicked when my car was broken into) and at the gym. Yes it's a bit bulky for the gym (got one of those armband things to slot it into) and the back of it gets fingerprints easily - but it's an awesome piece of kit.

Long term I might get a shuffle just for the gym but I love my iPod. Only issue I've had is finding a case for it that meets my needs and still lets me put it in the speaker dock I've got on my desk that I use for charging it and playing music while at the computer. I think I've bought about 5 cases over time and a gym armband for it and still not found one I'm 100% happy with as most of the cases available are for Nanos.

Maybe it's just me, but the battery life on my 4th generation ipod nano seems to be much less than my original ipod nano. I mean, I can understand it running out faster when I'm watching movies, but it seems like it runs out fast even when I'm just listening to songs too. I guess I could just buy a docking station for when I'm at work or something.

My older brother has a different ipod and his batteries never freakin run out, like ever. I swear he has a hidden solar panel or found a loophole in the law of conservation of energy.

    2 words.

    Cowon iAudio

I've had this 60 gig motherfucker for 5 years now and it's still going strong. I've dropped it, water has gotten on (and i'm pretty sure in) it. I use it at least 4 hours almost every day and the battery still holds a 10 hour charge. Built in FM radio. It does video. You just drag and drop files/folders whatever. It plays file formats that I've never even heard of, has a microphone for recording. You can save and view text files on it, and all for under 250 (when I got it, I think they've gone up since then).

THE BEST purchase I've ever made with anything.

But please enjoy your lolpod :/

Just wanna throw in some good words about iTouch.

It might be an phoneless iPhone but one of the best things about iTouch/iPhone is the TONS of great games it has. This being a gamer forum I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy them. I've been thinking about getting one just for the games. The iPhone is just too damn expensive with all the monthly fees etc. so I'd rather just get the iTouch so I can play music and games.

Has anybody else suggested the new Sony "wearable" Walkman yet (pic related)?

    http://www.haggul.com/ProdImage/189%5C4460486.jpg

I've had it for a month or so (mine is gold and purple) and couldn't be any more satisfied with my investment (the only downside being the extremely low storage capacity which is just 2 Gb, more than enough for me though): it's unbelievably comfortable and light, sturdier than it looks, the interface is really versatile and as intuitive as it gets, the battery life acceptable and finally no more fucking headphones cables laying around/getting stuck underneath my clothes or stuff falling off of my pockets while I'm running/moving/whatever.

I ended up giving the ipod to my fiancée the day I purchased it and haven't looked back since.

EDIT: the "software" also allows you to drag and drop stuff as you see fit with no limitation whatsoever (you could actually bypass it entirely but it adds some useful indicization to the tracks for the "Zappin" search feature which helps to scroll through the tracks and select them quickly).

I don't really see how anyone has a problem with an iPod, I had my first one (a 2nd gen) for four years before it finally died, and I abused it like there was no tomorrow with my constantly dropping it onto hard surfaces all the time. I bought a 5th gen video ipod after that and loved it, still going after 3 or 4 years. It's not used anymore since I was given an iphone last year, but the battery life on the 5th gen ipods was pretty ridiculous, 8 hours of just music and you could watch at least 2 or 3 movies before the battery finally died.

Personally I don't really like itunes, but there's a way around that just like there is a way around everything. Whoever told you that you can only put itunes purchases music on an ipod is just a retard though, I pirate pretty much all the music I have and itunes doesn't care where it comes from.

Rio or bust. This baby still works after around 10 years of being treated like shit.

In all seriousness...I'm currently using a Zen XFi 32GB after having an iRiver 20GB for probably 4~5 years. Had some issues early on, but fixed them with a reformat and haven't had a problem since. Gave the woman a 16GB iPod Touch I won at a raffle and she loves it. Wish my Zen had a touchscreen, but I'll live.

    Yes and No

I find it kind of ironic, 95% of my music is pirated, and it works great on itunes. The music that I actually buy in the stores, and I get a CD, I usually rip it with Windows Media Player, which default rips to .wma format. Which Itunes will not play, it insists on converting it to .aac which is what I find ironic, it plays pirated music, but not purchased music.
