So I think somehow my 275gtx, i7 920 system runs FFXI even worse than my core2duo 8800gts combo. I pretty much want to slash my wrists right now. No shadows, no weather, have it showing the fewest models possible in the config menu, no spell effects. People just standing around at Bahamut v2, not even a full alliance. 13-19 fps. Running the latest 186.18 drivers for Win7 64bit. I don't really know what to say.

Game runs fine with nobody else around or around 6ish people in view.

I used to be able to fraps out DL runs when I was on XP and have a smooth/high FPS fight. Since I moved to Vista I lag the fuck out lol . . .I'm trying to tweak stuff here and there cuz I shouldn't be running this bad with the upgrade and 5 more gigs of ram. (at least I hope)

I have this feeling if I go back to Windows XP I won't have a single problem with FFXI.

Just got done trying several things. Went through the nvidia control panel to force everything off like antialiasing, though I think FFXI probably doesn't even enable that but wanted to be sure. Still garbage FPS. Tried the 185.85 drivers, garbage. 186.18 drivers, garbage. Default drivers that Windows 7 installs when you uninstall drivers, garbage. Ran FFXI without windower, garbage. It's not like I'm trying to do something impossible here. I'm only running FFXI at 1920x1200 and 2048x2048 background resolution. I don't have any other games installed yet but I downloaded a demo of 3dmark06 and I scored 19kish points, which seemed to be along what everyone with my specs scores at. So I don't think it's a hardware issue. I just really do not know what to say. I'll probably install XP on a different harddrive and see if FFXI runs ok there, but this is stupid beyond words.

edit: Check out this hot ass fps in whitegate.

Hmm maybe try setting your background resolution equal to your foreground resolution? Doubt it'll make much, if any difference though. The only other thing I can think of right now is maybe an obscure BIOS setting is affecting performance somehow.

This might be interesting, tried several background resolutions this morning, ending with 1024x1024. Every resolution seems to have the same fps problem. I'm betting I would still have the same issue at the lowest setting. Everything points to a driver issue with Windows 7 right? I don't understand that though. My friend who I originally referenced earlier is running an identical video card under Vista 64bit and doesn't have a problem. I suppose I can try Vista drivers but I think it should be the same right? Anyways screenshot for a pretty good pc running FFXI worse than a PS2 probably.

edit: Checked and they are packaging Vista and Windows 7 drivers together now, I guess I can try to find an older version but ya.

edit2: If it's relevant I ran FFXIBench3 last night and scored over 10k in High so... I don't really know what to say.

Win7 uses the same drivers as Vista in most cases. You can replace the individual driver files with something older though, I think.

Try setting your background res to the same as your base res (1920x1200) in the registry and see how that runs.

I tried the 1920x1200 background resolution as Solefald had also suggested but I guess I had not posted that I did! Sorry. :X Most currently I have downloaded 182.50 drivers my friend said he was using in Vista 64bit so I am going to load FFXI and see how it goes.

And for the people that keep checking on this thread and others like it I've started, I do really appreciate it.

edit: 182.50 vista 64 drivers yield the same results. >.>

edit2: Maxing characters displayed yields single digit FPS at the moghouse, lol.

Until I can think of another plan of action to take, I'm going to install XP to a spare drive and patch up and see how FFXI acts there. Worst case scenario is I boot into XP to play FFXI. That's pretty fucking dumb though!

Just to be sure, you did a clean install of Windows 7 right? You didn't carry it over from your old computer did you?

And are you running the Vista version of the PlayOnline client?

Well, got XP installed and patched as well as FFXI loaded and it's having the same problems I was having in Windows 7. Though I didn't leave Whitegate so it may actually perform better in other areas, I don't know.

lol pc limitations. In all seriousness though, I don't think it's possible to cap frames in this game, its just designed and coded terribly. Also, maybe your friend has lowered his settings and isn't playing on a 24"? dumb cat

I get single-digit frames in Bastok and my Mog House with my Radeon 9600 Pro ever since WotG launched, and only get a normal frame rate on my PS2. I'm running XP on my PC, have a 3 GHz Pentium 4 HT, and 3 GB of RAM. I've tried even running at the most minimal settings, with 640x480 overlay and 256x256 background with no shadows or special effects at all, and the frame rate doesn't increase. Vista isn't the problem, it's some of the coding of the game, especially since WotG dropped.

I used to get 20-something FPS in most areas with this same hardware setup, but when WotG dropped it all went to crap, and the only fix at all was to downgrade my drivers to a version from 2005. That's all tech support would say when I contacted them.

"SER James: Thank you. Your problem with the PC is the graphics driver. For that ATI RADEON series of cards, we only support up to the Catalyst 5.13 drivers available from ATI. You would need to downgrade to the supported drivers."

Even those drivers didn't do much to increase my frame rate. I just occasionally go above 10 FPS now. I even tried the latest Omega Drivers for my card, which took 4 versions to find one that would actually install successfully, and that hasn't helped much except to make it so my DVI monitor won't stay off if it goes to sleep, since the old driver wouldn't resend the signal after that happened.

Whoever said don't run bittorrent with FFXI is fucking retarded. Just make sure you throttle bittorrent to only use 50-75% of your bandwidth at one time.

Also, network traffic does not decrease frame rate at all. This is like saying having more people in your car causes traffic congestion.

The amount of network data that comes through FFXI, which was devloped to be run on dialup PS2 modems, is negligible at best. The problem is the shitty PS2 code being "emulated" for PC use and not being able to handle too many polygons on screen at one time properly.

You will NEVER see a computer that can do constant 30 FPS at the AH or Besieged because it's not a hardware limitation of the PC. It's a software limitation of the code being made for the hardware limitations of the PS2.

Probably because there's no reason to get single digit FPS in ffxi?

im sure you have already tried this, but just play around with drivers. One driver i tried kept me under 10fps. and the one im out now i rarely go under 25fps. I play full screen and rarely have low fps. Go on that laptop2go website or try some beta drivers off nvidia or something. Frustrating but worth it. im on vista btw.
