Do you think I'd be okay on that 97 Katana? It has a crack in the side, but its not too bad I don't think. Its unregistered (not sure what that means) and not inspected. He wants $1900 for it, but I really want to keep it closer to $1500. He sounds desperate to sell too, so I'm not sure. Started up and sounded fine when I went and looked at it.

unregistered is not good imo, usually means stolen does he have a title with his name on it without it being marked salvaged either. 1900 is a lot for that old of a bike without allowing it to be inspected, red flag there too.

there's a lot of things to check on a bike, that can be minor when getting screwed on a car deal, that can be fatal. Hell a nicked up front wheel can lead to a high side.

We looked at his public arrests (guy I work with is weird) and hes been busted a few times for riding unregistered and one was unsafe use of vehicle or something. He says he has clean title though, and the pics he sent me have other bikes in the background.

So anyway, I'm going to keep looking, preferably for a Katana now 'cause I like the way they look. The guy I work with is going to try to bargain the price down for me, but I decided to move on yesterday.

look for an older CBR, they look similar. I like a naked sportbike look, but most people don't.

My friend mentioned that to me this morning, but I said something to the guys I work with and they thought I was lying lol. I actually like the way the plastics look on sports bikes, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

I saw a '99 Ninja zx-6r for $2k today. I sent the guy an email but wouldn't be surprised if it sold already.

totally fair price on that one. It might be a bit for you if it's the older 636.

Okay, so I'm going to look at a '96 Katana 600. The pics look good, but we'll wait to see. Guy is asking $2100, but I'm going to off $1700, and maybe go to $1850 and see.

Also, I was doing quotes on insurance. I went to Progressive and they told me like $113 for $25k coverage, but Geico and Esurance bother were close to $500 for a year, but also covered the bike. I haven't finished the quote because I need the VIN which I don't have, but am I going to have bad insurance with Progressive, or are the other two just too much?

Insurance on sport bikes is insane for young single people. Progressive quoted me $1600 on a brand new 600 when I first bought it. But if you really want to keep your bike in a good condition, and don't want to ride around town with cracked fairings, it is something to look into. I got rear-ended at a red light, into a stalled van in front of me, when the Durango behind me hit the gas when he saw the green light. Broke the rear/front/side fairings, right hand mirror, cracked a weld on the exhaust, and cracked both the rear and front lights. It cost $2000 just to replace all the plastic pieces. Luckily the retard in the Durango was insured, and Geico had me a check two days later.

State Farm and Allstate are my choices for motorcycle insurance. They used to not advertise it, but I believe they are now so it's a bit easier to get than it used to be, heh. Allstate takes ~150 from me every year for everything but collision. My bike was only 5500 when I bought it, Geico and Progessive wanted 1500+++ for collision, Allstate wanted around 800; all with 500 deductibles. That was at 19 or 20, I can't remember which now. I'd get another quote now that I'm a bit older, but the bike is only worth ~3000 now that I've highsided it But it's all back together fine for not a lot more than the deductible I would of had.

Progressive insurance is based off the displacement of the engine. I think my 500 with them was like $40 a month.

Well, I think I'm going to go with the '96 Katana at $2000. The KBB value is a little higher than that, and this guy kept great care of the bike. He also has an extra set of mirrors and brake pads he's going to throw in also, and he wired the bike for LEDs. Only the front has lights, but I thought it looked pretty cool. The tires might need replaced by the end of the summer, but I don't plan on riding too much until I feel ready enough too.

So here's the hard part. He lives in West Virginia and I live in Pennsylvania. I'm not sure how transferring the title and paying taxes will work. I'm going to call a place tomorrow, but I don't want to have to have him come all the way up here to do this. I'll see what I can find out and give this guy a call tomorrow when I'm on lunch.

it's simple he signs and dates the title, you sign and date the title, he writes up a bill of sale and you take those to whatever place in PA where you pay for the license plates and you give it to them they take your money for the taxes and registration and they mail you the title with your name on it in 6-8 weeks.
