Anyone ever hooked up a ps3 to a vga port?

Trying to get ghetto macgyver here at work since we're pretty slow atm. I was thinking for some reason there was already a vga port on the ps3 but apparently that was a brain fart. I was planning to hook the audio from the rca outputs to mic/line in on my pc so I could get sound. I think the audio can still work, but I'm now at an impass on the video portion. I did find a cable that takes component y/pr/pb and outputs vga, and from all I can tell the ps3 component cable combines y/pr/pb and y/cr/cb so I think it will work. Any ideas?

what kind of monitor are you trying to use?

LCD? CRT? does it have HDMI ports (and as such, does the monitor have an audio out to run to your soundcard)? does it have an HDCP complient DVI port?

going the component to VGA route should be a last resort

in that case, you have two options

you can buy an HDFury or HDFury2, and run an HDMI cable to the HDFury adapter, and then run the included VGA cable to your monitor

    or

you can buy a VGA box like the X2VGA 2.0 or the new one from datapro, can't remember the name... and buy a set of component cables for your PS3 and run them to the VGA transcoder box, and then run VGA to your monitor

VGA output is supported on PS2 and PS3 via the Multi A/V port that your non-HDMI cables plug into. You have to set component out to RGB color encoding for it to work, and you have to find one of the rare VGA cables. Otherwise, you need a digital DVI compatible monitor and an HDMI to DVI adapter, ot you need a VGA box to convert the signal to VGA from component or S-Video.

Sony only ever sold their VGA cable with the PS2 Linux Kit. Xploder made an HDTV upscaler program that came with a VGA cable, which you may also be able to find.

ONe other option is to get an adapter that has the three RCA plugs on one end and VGA on the other, but VGA uses RGB color encoding, so you have to set your system to output that. I actually have a wire in my room that serves that purpose, except both ends are male.

using the RGB option via component, in the PS3's settings (i believe) limits the video output to 480p (720x480, or 640x480 depending on your aspect ratio)

    kinda shitty

Yeah I was thinking about the resolution it would come out as afterwards and thought it might end up bad on a monitor.
