    I need a new router

I'm tired of my POS Linksys choking every time I try to do something intensive, what's good out now?

I was looking at Buffalo's site and they're selling in the US again (I guess that lawsuit they had got dropped?), anyone used their recent products?

Or, I'm not opposed to doing dd-wrt either if someone can recommend a model that works well with it and is fairly easy to set up.

DD-WRT on Linksys routers is pretty amazing, a huge step over the normal firmware. I went from having a WRT54G that wasn't reliable at all to one that's been rock solid for years now.

If you want a N-device though, you may not want Linksys

Don't really care about N. And while I know dd-wrt has worked well in the past, Linksys has also taken strides to keep people from using it; regardless of how well it works on a previous generation, I kind of need to know if it works on a current model that's on the market.

And dd-wrt's supported device list only basically says "yeah, you can install it". Doesn't mean it works well or properly, I've heard of some of them melting down the router after installing cause it wasn't built with proper cooling or stuff.

Which router do you have? I have WRT54Gv5, WRT54GL, and a WAP54G all running good. I've got a WRT610N that's got beta-level quality, but that's cause the release is beta

I have a WUSB54GS (basically the laptop version of the WRT54GS).. do you happen to know if DD-WRT will work on it?

Amazon says that that model is this

DD-WRT is for the WRT series Broadcom based routers, that's an adapter, sadly.

Mine is one of the last oldschool WRT54Gs before they went stupid and freaked the hell out at everything (v2 I believe). It's generally been ok but recently just has gotten to be an irritation with some of its issues.

This router supports DD-WRT. I would give it a shot before you buy a new one.

might look scary, but who cares if you break it, since you were planning on buying a new router.

    personally, for this part:

    - download latest
    -- for v1: RC5 mini or RC5 nokaid
    -- for v2 and v2.1: RC5 micro
i would use this instead (its said to run best on this router):

Personally, I use an ASUS WL-500G with a version of Tomato modded to support the USB port. The default firmware is complete trash, but the router itself gives Tomato a lot of breathing room in terms of memory. I previously used a WRT54G with DD-WRT, and I'd have to say that Tomato is the nicer firmware if you get a router that supports it, definitely check it out.
