Lost Odyssey and other RPG games

So I think I'm done with w/FFXI, especially after the news about FFXIV. This was my 1st and last mmo and I don't really have a want to do another ever. So...I did hear good things about Lost Odyssey. I've been poking around my local stores and ebay/half.com and noticed a seller with it for cheap. But! They say the cover/manual are in spanish but you can play the game just fine in English. I'm not sure if it would be wise to buy this to save $5 or so.

Here is a link to the sale page.

What about any other RPG type games? Currently I'm going back thru FFVIII as it's my favorite and I still need to finish up FFXII but my PS2 controller is busted. Any suggestions for PS/PS2 or Xbox360 are much appreciated!

360 I recommend Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata is pretty good (both have/will have better ports on the PS3 but if you don't have one...)
Mass Effect is RPGish, some people still call it a shooter.
PS2 wise, depending on how japanese you like your games I recommend anything Shin Megami Tensei related, Dark Cloud 1 and 2, Atelier Iris series, Okami (more zeldaish than RPG), and Dragon Quest VIII.

LO is very good if you like old school final fantasy games. It feels exactly like one. Besides the graphics though, it doesn't do anything new. Blue Dragon is made by the same team, and while it isn't as good, is a pretty good RPG for the Xbox.

Lost Odyssey was one of the last games that completely grabbed me all the way through - I tend to get bored in the middle of games and give them up but it was just a really nice storyline. The first boss is like stupidly hard if you hit it at the level you're probably at just from running through the zone though - just don't click through all the dreams cos they're some of the nicest bits of the game.

Definitely get Tales of Vesperia. And Star Ocean 4 is probably worth picking up as well.

I played Lost Odyssey in it's entirety (1000/1100) as well as Tales of Vesperia (1000/1000), and they are both 10/10 would play again. I can't get into Star Ocean 4...

Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean, Tales of Vesperia.

Stay clear of Infinite Undiscovery definately imo, and maybe Last Remnant if you're after a proper RPG where you get to control everything about the characters.

I literally scoured the entire world and I was missing a couple underwater, and a couple of hidden chests in the Forgotten Cave...I was raging for a good two days before I bumped into a fucking tree in Ipsilon Mountains and dinged it, haha. Good luck, it's a beast of an achievement. Not as bad as ToV's Item Nerd, though.

Lost Odyssey's story is decent, but the gameplay bored me a bit. Really quality stuff though, worth the price.

I did like Last Remnant more, but I'm not sure why. I think it's definitely worth a try, even if just for the different battle system.

Thanks for all the replies! I've heard LO is much like old school FF and that is why I figured I should get that. I've pretty much been fully absorbed in FFXI so I don't know anything about the other games listed. I'll check out some reviews and videos. I usually go to gamespot.com for reviews and videos and of course youtube for videos as well.

I heard with Last Remnant a lot of people said they either completely loved it or fully hated it. If I can find that for the right price I might check that out. Speaking of price, has anyone experienced buying a game like listed in the link provided in the OP? IIRC when I bought my 2nd Xbox and it came w/Forza Motorsports, the box and instructions were listed in spanish and had the "not for resale" tag on it but the game played fine. I'm a cheapass so if I can save some bucks I'd rather buy LO on ebay for $13.

Any opinions on Elder Scrolls: Oblivion? Heard that is an awesome game as well that you can just get fully absorbed in.

You like JRPG's or WRPG's or both? If you're a fan of WRPG's it's a mustplay IMO. I didn't like it but I'm not much of a fan of them in the first place..

A little of both. I have enjoyed all of FF series but didn't care for 9 as I felt it was geared towards a more child like base. When looking at RPGs I'm more drawn towards those that are I guess considered adult-like if that makes any sense. Looking at Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, etc really don't appeal to me because it just "looks" like it's for kids. I didn't really enjoy Fable because I felt that way too and that's also why I never tried WoW. I realize that may seem close minded but I guess that's just how I am. It would be so much easier if I could rent games like that to check them out but I'm not paying $8 or w/e at Blockbuster to rent.

Games like Fallout 3 also kind of interest me because it's listed as an action RPG so you get the feel of an RPG just different tools of destruction (guns for swords etc).

I go all over the map for gaming. Currently I switch from FFVIII to NBA live 09 to CoD WaW. Right now though I'm really missing the storyline of games and that's what draws me to RPGs. I think that's also why I fell out of FFXI because after CoP really, at least to me, the story flat out sucks and I spent the last year bouncing thru shit LS's and the game turned into just a gear hunt, which I suppose that's what MMOs ultimately are in the end. I'd even try out a game like Dark Sector or Kane and Lynch if the storyline is great and the game play is good.

LO & Tales of Vesperia are both top notch. Last Remnant is ok, I am currently playing Star Ocean 4, so far it's been ok, not anything compared to Lost Odyssey and Tales though. On PS2 should look at Persona 3 Fez & Persona 4 both were really good.

Oblivion was a bit too "free" for me, I do like going in a straight line more than to be able to freely do whatever I want- gets boring after a while. That's what Oblivion was about, so I rushed through the story and didn't really get much more out of it. Can't say the story was too good either, lacks cutscenes and epicness. So if you're mainly looking for story, I wouldn't suggest it. Fallout had better story (its like Oblivion) but I felt it was too short too.

But tbh Last Remnant's story sucks and only the battles and side content kept me interested, so I'm not sure if that's what youre looking for either.

If you're not going to read the Thousand Years of Dreams, don't bother getting Lost Odyssey. The story is great, but those are freaking amazing storytelling that give the main character so much depth and you really miss out if you skip those.

But I agree with most ppl, Lost Odyssey has a great story with old school FF gameplay, Last Remnant's story was a little different but it has become one of my all time favorite RPGs. I personally loved the story.

Fiance was playing Last Remnant but he seems to have gotten fed up with it - and he normally plays games through to the end (was in a batch of stuff my mum bought for him for Xmas having gone into the game shop and told them he likes RPG stuff - and got the choices pretty much bang on buying blindly). I might pick it up over the summer when I've got time on my hands - looks kinda interesting storylinewise.

Keep meaning to pick up a cheap copy of Blue Dragon but haven't been near the local gamestation in a while now (when I've had cash handy to buy it).

I got a few hours out of Oblivion. I found it to be incredibly dull.
