Lost Odyssey and other RPG games

Star Ocean 4, play with subtitles and the mute button on, just throw some music on.

It's really fun, the story is so-so and the voice acting is horrible, but it's really fun.

Oblivion is pretty fun, I'm getting into it. It's a bit more different from other games in that (as mentioned) it's extremely open, there's really no set way you can play the game and it's unlikely you'd even be able to reproduce the same game file twice things are so different. I also just got Sacred 2 and haven't really cracked into that enough yet, I'm going to play it with the roommate some (I hear it's great multiplayer, and pretty bad solo).

edit: if you've played Fable II, Oblivion is somewhat similar but a lot less linear, and you don't get quite the same amount of changes being made to everything based on your actions, or at least not to the scale that Fable II does it.

Ended up ordering LO on ebay today for $12.86 (that's with shipping). Screw paying gamestop $27 for used! lol got a PS2 controller also for $6.75 so I can finish FFXII. I really want to finish that up. I honestly can't remember why I quit playing it. I think it's when I came back to the ffxi.

Checked out some videos on youtube for persona. Those games look like a trip. I think it was 4 where they shoot themselves in the head to make some thing help them in battle? Trippy....lol.

Good choice picking up LO, and at that price it's a steal, Persona 3 is the one were they shoot themselves in the head to call there persona's. You probably stopped playing XII cause of how the story & characters sucked (Except Balthier) <.< I put 120 hours into that game and never once had that feeling you normally get when you play a FF game, that "Oshit its 3a.m. I have work in 3 hours I have to go to sleep..... Fuck it I gotta get to the next part and see what happens!" I really, really enjoyed the gameplay and all of the Hunt club and side quests but was lulled by the dull story and characters.

Only 'rpg' type games that I enjoyed for this gen are Valkria Chronicles, Folklore, Oblivion, and Fallout. Not sure if the first two are on the 360 though as I only played em on PS3. I think Folklore is on the 360 and while its not "OMG" great, it is for some reason memorable for me although I cannot place my finger on why.

When I had my 360, I put easily over 100 hours into LO. I enjoyed playing it very much. Eternal Sonata was also really amazing. Great idea for a game. The battle system was my favorite part. Blue Dragon was also another well done game. I put a lot of time into that as well. Can't believe how quickly games go down in price. Glad I don't have my 360 anymore because I always buy the good games when they are $60.

Everyone keeps saying how LO is so much like old school FF and it makes me really happy I ordered it. Not to turn this into a "let's complain about ffxi", but when playing "normal" RPG's I feel like every time I fire up a game, I can actually get something accomplished. And also, it's all on me, not depending on if people show up to events or help out, etc.

Yeah I won't pay a monthly fee for it again I think. I can get my "online action" from CoD and NBA live.

It's not to say I don't really enjoy FFXI, in fact, I think it's the most fun I have ever had playing a game. But after doing ZM, CoP, and the other I guess important storylines, I've grown bitter from wasting time in LS's that fail, unreliable "friends", and of course the weeks of Limbus/Einherjar/ZNM, etc with no reward at the end either from items I'd be up for not dropping or LS leaders deciding their friends deserve items more then the workhorses. Yes I understand there truly are great LS's out there and everyone gets a piece of the pie, I just haven't been that fortunate and for me I'd rather have the pause button!

Lost Odyssey is the closest game i've every played to a final fantasy game that wasn't final fantasy.

Lost Odyssey and Fallout 3 are both incredible games, Fallout 3 being one of my all time favorites, now.

Lost Odyssey reunited the original FF design team, I think it's the people that all bailed after 7, but they did at least 1 through 6 for sure. It definitely shows why the early FF games are still the best even today.

Speaking of teh earlier ones, was debating getting FF Anthologies. Never played those ones. And...so many great reviews about Fallout 3 but a lot saying content gets stale after awhile. Bored players? Bad players? Who knows. If the game is getting tons of 9/10 ratings it's gotta be pretty damn good.

Fallout 3 is very good, I just would not recommend it for PC. I installed it once and absolutely loved it. Reformatted my computer about 2 months later and ever since I cannot install it without getting weird errors that nobody I know can fix - not even the comp sci majors at my university.

I don't think its the disc, but I haven't had this problem with any other game.

The story was pretty good, the gameplay was awesome with the slow mo style or the FPS style, whichever you prefered. My only real complaint was that I was almost constantly low on ammo throughout the whole first 20 levels. Content can get stale after a while, but the game is very much like oblivion in that you can mod the game to hell and back making it always interesting. The recent expansion would also be interesting to check out.

Lost Odyssey is very much like the old FF style - but its much more mature looking. The battle system reminds me a lot of FF8, but it is still different in its own way. I was a little dissapointed with it, especially because for a large amount of story depth you have to read these long stories that just seemed boring to me. As a result I put the game down after I hit the 3rd disc and picked up Tales of Vesperia about 2 weeks after. Don't get me wrong, LO is very well done, but it just wasn't for me.

I'm sort of working through Lost Oddysey on and off at the moment (no spoilers please!) and am at the Black Cave thingy but the random encounters are so frequent and repetitive and take ages (meaning 5mins~ per battle), REALLY putting me off the game.

Am I underlevelled or doing something wrong or does it get better later? I'm really enjoying the story and the emotional depth in the Thousand Years of Dreams is intense but the sheer wall of encounters I have to face is REALLY offputting.

FF6 is hands-down my favorite FF; incredible story and cast of characters. I only played through FF5 once and that was ages ago (so I don't remember much), but it's a favorite of a friend of mines so it can't be half-bad.

It's been awhile but if your talking about the cave with the "poison" then there is a lot of encounters in there I seem to remember, might be a level thing as well. Overall LO paced encounters fairly well so don't let that area put you off.

If you're willing to dip into the past generation, I'd highly suggest Bioware's KOTOR and Jade Empire games for Xbox or PC. They are a very good middle ground between the Oblivion do whatever you want and Final Fantasy's do whatever we want you to do. They have great plots whose main failing is that they're too similar to each other. If you want to get into a deep, deep PC WRPG that's from 2000, I'd also highly suggest Baldur's Gate II. It's aged well once you adjust your eyes for the graphics and, despite being as open as Oblivion, it always gives you a path to follow. You can divert into the larger world, but it has focus that Bethesda games generally lack.

LO is a fucking beast of a game. I have like 96? hours in it, all characters at 100, everyone has learned all their skills, backyard fights, secret bosses etc etc done. Its the only RPG this gen that has completely suckered me in like old school RPGs used to do for me.

As for anything else, I really hate WRPGs, I hate the blandness of them and I hate how they play. But Fallout 3 was amazing. Go ahead and get that, you won't regret it.

As for any other JRPGs, Tales of Vesperia was good, Last Remnant was decent, Infinite Undiscovery was pure shit, and I can't think of anything else at the moment.

EDIT: I completely forgot! If you have a PS3 OP, do yourself a huge favor and get yourself Valkyria Chronicles. THE BEST game on ps3 hands down, and 2nd best RPG only to LO really.
