Making gifs and editing videos

So I dl'd virtualdub and deleted boring parts of a video and then tried to save it with all the changes and the size of the file was huge, it was like 1gb and only 2 mins long. How do I make them not omghuge.

I think I chose the save as avi option if that matters. I just saw that the projected size of the video would be 8gb.

Video > Compression. I use Xvid MPEG 4 codec.

Might wanna play with the settings a bit too to get it to however low you want without raping the quality.

I chose that file type and then went to configure. DO you know what the profile @ level (simple, advanced simple) or encoding type (single pass etc), or target quantizer does specifically? If the file was already compressed will the quality still drop if all I did was delete scenes.
