The version you find on torrent sites changes your phone into a demo version with 3.0 OS. Once that's installed, it's stuck like that for good. Can NOT upgrade from that.

13" MBP is hot.. I didn't buy my iPhone 3G at the subsidized price so here's hoping I can upgrade without paying the full price..
lol, gizmodo is pretty much saying "hey, download this from torrents using these terms!"
Gizmodo - Torrent iPhone OS 3.0 Naming Guide for iPhone 2G, 3G, and iPod Touch - iPhone OS 3.0
I'm still using my first gen iPhone, so I'm definitely excited about the 3GS. I bought mine unlocked off eBay for CAD$600 before it was even released here (firmware 1.1.2, now running 2.2), so that was worth it. Looks like I'm going to have to update my current phone to 3.0 and sell it off for $100-150 and fork out another $600 for an unlocked 3GS. Thing is, I'm going to have to wait for it to be unlocked before I can get one... took the 3G forever. =(
Seriously. I'm really dissapointed they didn't announce a tablet PC. It was the only reason I read the liveblogs.
I believe the 3G's are being cut to 99 dollars...not a bad deal if you wanna use it as a replacement for an iTouch + skype.
17" for $2500....fucking lol....
All things considered, I owned a 15" unibody Macbook Pro up until 3 months ago, where I opted to sell it on Craigslist and buy a Gateway FX series laptop. It had 4 GB compared to the 2 GB default of the unibody, a nVidia 9800M GTS 1 GB video card, 600 GB hard drive, and a nice processor, and that was for about half the price the 17" MBP is/was going for.
Of course, the unibody MBP was free for me. I received it as a replacement for a older generation MBP that I took in for repairs about 6 times, and let me tell you, the Apple store absolutely refused to give me a replacement computer, they just kept shipping it in for repair! It would be gone for a week at a time, so I was without a laptop for 6 weeks in 2007. Does that seem okay to any of you? I had to scream at AppleCare over the phone for an hour until they would even replace it themselves. To make matters worse, the unibody's screen backlight was bleeding through, and I believe due to the laptop staying out in below zero for several hours, the screen bent a little, as I could never get it to shut all the way. There was NO WAY I was going to go through with sending it in for repair too.
Jesus. 2.5k for a laptop with the same specs I got for 1.1k, it's ridiculous. I wouldn't pay 1.4k for the logo and OS X operating system. It was ridiculous that I spent 2k on a 15" MBP over 2 years ago. Fuck Apple.
No offense, guys.
The company I work for approached Apple when the iPhone was first firming up, curious about its application as a corporate phone. Apple straight up told us to wait for the 3rd gen.
Miraculously, it looks like the iPhone finally incorporates the rather critical bits that were missing to make it genuinely useful.
Amazing how they knew that two years in advance.
Oh, and I read an article at AnandTech making some guesses at the new hardware. If those guesses are accurate, new phone should be significantly quicker than the old ones, which is just tits.
600MHz w/256MB RAM vs. 412MHz w/128MB RAM
is what i'm seeing
Their phones are amazing and well priced for what you get.
Their laptops....you have to seriously have something wrong with your head to pay some of those prices for the specs / performance you get based on what you COULD get for that price tag....
Bit the bullet and reserved a 32G Iphone 3G S today...couldn't wait till september. excited for next friday!
