As pointless as it ultimately is, it speaks volumes about how much they care about the game.

Vintage/Legacy tournament players were the vast minority until recently so not sure how white bordered Mishra comes up enough to matter.
The Mishra Factory was obviously an example...lol. Beta Lord's vs. white border Lord of Atlantis then...or white bordered basic lands vs. Guru lands...it doesn't matter.
All foil Unhinged lands onry!
I actually think it's gone the other way now. Back in 2000 using white bordered made you a noob but a lot of white bordered versions of cards are now much harder to find because of that reason.
Someone using white bordered cards is pretty unique these days.
Unless its a Dual Land or Portal 3 card..you have no excuse for a white bordered card. Even moxes should be beta/alpha only.
Unhinged and those lands from that joke set are awful. Newschool players use them to try and look "cool". I rock Euro, Guru, Arena, and Apac lands. Have a set of each.
My Cawblade deck has 5 Kangaroo plains and 6 Guru Islands <3 <3
Edit: Unglued
Best Lands:
Plains: Australia APAC
Island: Guru
Swamp: Arena
Mountain: Arabian Nights misprint
Forest: Euro (Forgot which country it was that looks the best)
Yeah, Unglued lands look like poop.
I'm not into lands just for their rarity or value (APAC/Arena/Euro) when I'm not an actual fan of the artwork. Guru lands, however, actually have rad art and are different enough looking to matter. I generally choose lands purely for aesthetic (Zendikar/Guru/Unhinged), and not so much for wow-factor. Then again, I'm not often playing with anyone that would be impressed with a full set of Gurus in the first place.
Summer Magic would like to have a word with you.
Judging someone based on the cards they play is stupid. Just because someone has more of a disposable income than another is no reason why they would be a better player than another with the same cards.
I love the way unglued Land look. I got two Foil Unglued Swamps too D:
1. Did Unglued even have foils? Maybe they had another unglued set after I took a long break from the game? I don't believe unglued foils even exist. You are likely mistaking these with unhinged.
2. Judging them based on their card borders is the same as judging a person who isn't using sleeves or is using clear, baseball card sleeves at a PTQ. 9/10 times the person is a lesser player. If they have put more money into the game, there is a very good (not 100%) chance they have also invested time and knowledge into the game. If you sit down across from Matt Sperling playing his all beta dualland and guru land deck versus across a guy using clear sleeves and 4th edition islands, there is most SURELY a reason to make judgements before the first spell is played. You should play accordingly.
3. Forgot about Summer Magic, lawl.
Have you ever played against military players? Lots of disposable income but they tend to play casual decks with their expensive cards.
I don't understand the "play accordingly" part. If you're playing to win, there should be no adjusting as your goal is to win whether they're playing WB or BB cards. For example: If you're playing Team America, are you going to go easier on a person playing a WB Merfolk deck than you would one playing the exact same deck but BB?
The sleeve issue makes more sense though.
By play accordingly, I mean stuff like, "Don't always play around the Force of Will". If they are playing no or clear sleaves + 4th ed island, I am not going to put them on a Force of Will and I'm running out Bob on turn 2.
You really wouldn't do the same?
If my opponent lead with Guru island, I am playing around it.
Foils started print in October of 98 with the Urza Block, Unglued was released in August of 98.
And your ideas of metagame are terrible. I'm the dick that would play white bordered just to troll people like you into oblivion.
I have my foil decks, my euro/guru/TK/promo/AB landsets and I don't value my land or decks over the person across the table dropping hashed cards from 7th.
Ya, I always get the two mixed up. Unhinged is what I meant. 20 bucks a pop for a land. Gotta love it.
This shit is fug.

This shit is delish.

This is the next best thing (visually) if you ask me.

I understand what you mean about the types of lands and the general value of the card versions people play potentially representing their skill level, but you can't rely on that. That's a little too much of a hunch to base your Force of Willing on, if you ask me.
That theory might be flawed considering alliances came out after unlimited so at least in my circle of friends if you had a ton of alliances you also had a ton of white border cards. Not to mention after that there were many white border core sets that came.
I know tons of people including myself who break your mold and many of them not myself including might complete destroy you if you estimate their skill to be subpar because they don't use sleeves or because they play with white border cards. Collectors care about sleeves and white border cards, hardcore players could care less as long as the card gets the job done.
This damn computer kept kicking my ass, so I decided to kick his for a change.

If my opponent leads with any Island, I'm putting them on Force of Will or Storm, usually Force of Will.
