Hmm Mentor of the Meek and Hero of Bladehold seem like a pretty awesome deck concept. I might start playing standard again. Hmmmmm, deck building would be nice if I could find people to playtest with

So, I have friends that are playing this and wanting me to give it a shot.

Problem is I don't really know how any of it works other than the basics. Are there any websites anybody can link me to that will explain in depth what the rules are and how exactly the game is played? Friends kept just telling me to go through their cards and make a deck then I could play against them with it and learn from there...but I had no idea what I should be putting into a deck or what half the cards even did.

    halp!

I haven't played magic since I was in middle school back in the day, but as of late I have been craving getting back into the ccg scene, so I figured I might as well start up playing the only ccg that seems like it will never die. The reason I'm posting here today is to ask about what card packs/boxes/etc. should I pick up to give me enough decent cards of one type to throw together a decent deck.

Right now I have been looking at buying a box of 4k commons and uncommons from this site http://www.coolstuffinc.com/ for $50, as well as picking up a box of Innistrad once it is out, which would give me enough basic commons/uncommons for a few decent decks, and the innistrad box would give me some cards to trade with at local card shops, as well as use in decks. Does that seem like a good way to get started in the world of MTG?

    Full spoilers up~

I'm wondering how exactly this works...

"Exchange?" So, that means Tree of Redemption's toughness becomes what your life total was... permanently? Has any other card ever touched upon this type of mechanic? Seems awkward.

I'd imagine that your life total becomes 13. It's toughness doesn't change.

Its toughness becomes what your life total was.. i.e. if you were at 2, you go to 13 and it becomes an 0/2.

All in all, looks like an OK set - not terribly fantastic for constructed, but drafting this set should be awesome!

So 2 instant speed 3mana spells that put 2 1/1s into play and then there's that enchantment that gives tokens you control +1/+1, Mentor of the Meek, Hero of Bladehold, that green enchantment that puts double tokens into play. Hmmm. Must see if this is viable @_@

Its toughness does change permanently until you do it again sure looks fun with Doran. Can't wait to have a 0/20. This set gonna be crazy fun limited~
Calling it now hidden gem of this set is bramblecrush.

So, say I was at 1 life and used Tree of Redemption, I would be at 13 life and it would become 0/1.

What happens if I blinked it in some manner? Would it come back into play as 0/13 again?

I'm just surprised they went with such an un-wordy mechanic for this concept. I would have expected something like "Comes into play with 13 redemption counters. Tap, remove any amount of counters: gain that much life. Tree dies if there are no counters"

Don't you mean turning it into a 0/40 in your Doran commander deck . I am going to have to rebuild my Doran commander deck now. That tree will be fun to play with.

Seems pretty straight forward. Exchange = trade. Not too difficult to get it. I do see it being broken in constructed though.

It's also requiring some alternative method of keeping track of its changing toughness outside of simple counters and X math. Which is usually not so straight-forward.

Well, piling counters for its toughness works but I do get what you're saying. It's a very new concept and very interesting.

Anyone got ideas for some new brews for decks? Deck ideas that leap out at me so far are U/G selfmill, B/R or Grixis Heartless summoning, G/U or U/W hexblade and G/B rock. Obviously people will try tribal decks currently humans look the best and werewolves look the weakest atm.

Spirit tokens sound fun to me at first glance. Casual, of course. Intangible Virtue, Spectral Rider, Doomed Traveler, Midnight Haunting, Orchard Spirit, Demonmail Hauberk, etc. I think some black/white Shadowmoor and Eventide stuff would land in it but I'm too lazy to look. I never quite cared for the Kamigawa spirits though...

I really like the feel of this set. I think I may have to collect the crap out of this block as I skipped Scars of Mirrodin due to lack of interest and no nostalgic ties.

spirit tokens are fun. I had a spirit/soldier token deck that was surprisingly decent for a casual deck. Spectral Procession is sick, and I'm partial to Promise of Bunrei as well as Twilight Drover (which is just short of broken with Ashnod's Altar).
