I just got back from my first FNM in a long ass time and it was Innistrad Draft. I was pretty pleased to go 3-0 and ended up going WG humans and werewolves. I later found out that the guy sitting to my right played straight green and the guy to my left played BW, so I was kind of surprised I ended up with some decent stuff. Ulvenwald Mystics (5/5 with G: Regenerate) worked out really well as long as I was able to keep it on the werewolf side. Orchard's Spirit with Inquisitor's Flail was definitely my win condition in several games. Rally the Peasants also worked really well for me. My biggest problem was no removal. I had Bonds of Faith and Prey Upon and that was it, pretty much. I will say that Trepanation Blade or Butcher's Cleaver on something that is difficult to block or unblockable is pretty scary.

How strict are people usually with adhering to rules at these types of things? I passed my turn and realized that I forgot to flip Thraben Sentry, but my opponent wouldn't let me because I missed the opportunity. I said sure since he was right. Then 2 turns later, he forgot to untap Tree of Redemption during his untap phase, drew a card and played a card before realizing it should be untapped. I said he missed it during his untap phase since he had already drawn and had entered the main phase. So, he called a judge over who allowed it saying something like untapping happens automatically. I didn't really pursue it further since it's not like this wasn't PT nor did I want to cause shit since everyone there seemed to know each other and I was new.

Thraben Sentry is a may trigger and can be ignored/forgotten. The untap step is mandatory. Forgetting a may trigger means you move on and learn, forgetting an untap generally results in a game rewind.

Funny, I didn't drop a game with GW humans with a few werewolves too. Then again only like 1 other competent player was at the table.

went 4-1 at the sealed release party last night. Built a black/white deck with a mix of zombies, vampires, humans no real tribal anything going on but my deck had a lot of synergy and fast creatures. Was super fun. Can't wait till the next draft. I didn't get any mythics or any good money cards in my 6 packs to build from, made the top 8 and we all split the prize so each of the top 8 walked away with 12 prize boosters. Ended up with a grim grin and a past in flames. Oh well was really fun.

Skipped the release event this time to finish up things around the house. Showed up around round 3 and traded for a Snapcaster Mage, Jace, and other fixings for Solar Flare. I do really like this set right now.

Started work on my new standard, tryin to build a version of Solar Flare that plans to substitute Heartless Summoning for a 3rd and 4th Lilliana. Essentially plays like an esper control deck, that has the threat of a turn4 Unburrial rites if you tapped out against me.

Heartless summoning would be really bad. You should reconsider and use removal instead. What decklist are you doing by exactly?

Summoning is there in place of 2 lilianas to act as a way of dealing with things like Titans and Preators that end up in my hand without a way to pitch them to the yard. It's not optimal, but its saving me 100$ that I don't need to spend before this weeks FNM where I can test it.

After drafting a bit, I decided to build a birthing pod deck. I probably should have waited until the meta settled before dropping money on a bunch of singles, but the deck seems pretty fun to play.

Actually you probably made the right move in this case.. Stromkirk Nobles went from a buck to like $25 each after SCG Indianapolis. Lilianas are approaching the $60 mark now - I knew they'd end up highly valued but I didn't think they'd make a run at JTMS.

Forgive the noob question, but why is that card good? The fact that you can get it out on turn 1 and there's not a lot that can counter it before it gets up to 3 or 4 hits on the player and makes a mess of things? I'm trying to better educate myself on card/mechanics strengths and weaknesses, particularly the nonobvious ones.

Its just the replacement for Goblin Guide in red decks before people sideboard against them. The price will fall because mono red sucks, lol.

Probably the biggest factor for its price increase is mono-red (Red Deck Wins?) placed first and second place at the latest SCG tournament in Indy this past weekend and both decks ran 4 nobles.

The combination of the standard rotation (which introduced new card that will initially be in short supply) and upcoming State & Provincial championships. People are basing the decks they plan to play at States on what makes it through the two SCG grinders in Indy and Nashville (this weekend) plus anything that might pop up in MTGO, which determines what cards they will buy. The price increase is trading speculators taking full advantage of this.
