Doesn't matter if the DCI/Hasbro supports pro tour play or not - starcitygames.com invitational and open series is already taking over the competitive tournament scene. other companies will follow suit, or they will team up to have a pro tour style season still in place. It reminds me of a PTQ/PT style environment all bundled up in the same weekend.

It is pretty freaking stupid to drop the World Championships though.

DUELS OF THE PLANESWALKERS, Y U HAVE SUCH WEAK DECKS VS FIRST THREE ENEMIES?

Winning should not be predicated solely on getting better draws.

    Fuck.

Also, I want Graveborn but can't find anyplace that still has a copy locally Q_Q

Quick question, I am running out to look at a lot of cards to purchase. The guy says that he has close to 100,000 cards. I have no idea if this is true or not. What do you guys think a reasonable price for that collection is? If you don't know what would you expect to pay per box of 10,000 random cards? I don't know condition or what sets they are from, the guy selling has no idea anything about magic cards at all.

Obviously if the set contains any of the power 9 that is a whole different ball park but ignoring that unlikely case is what I am hoping to get some help on.

Is he letting you look through the cards? I'd ballpark it at .05-.10 a card if he doesn't let you look through the lot.

MTG sites that buy bulk pay like $3-4 per 1000 of commons/uncommons. If its all unsorted and as-is depending on range of sets offer $4-8 per 1000. If a lot of them aren't M/NM you can definitely lower the price. At Played and worse, unless its P9-tier, not even bulk buyers will touch them. And look at the variety of cards. Seeing a 1000 card box contain 100 Touch of Death will suggest overall poor lot quality. Unless you're really into Ice Age crap.

    Cape Fear Bulk Rates:
    Rares for $0.10
    Commons/Uncommons, $3.00/1,000 ($4.00/1,000 if shipped in)
    Foil rares $0.25
Foil common, uncommon and lands $0.04
All bulk items must be arranged facing the same way and in "row"ed card boxes. No sloppy shoe boxes.

^ Has a more detailed pricing layout, but you can gather they are about the same.

Went, looked, not nearly 100k cards more like 10k cards (most of what he thought were magic cards were WoW, Naruto, Pokemon, Yugio etc cards) and in the end there was absolutely nothing in the cards. He wanted $500 for them and there was only one binder of rares and the only good cards in it were a guilded lotus, sliver legion, and 3 primeval titans, and I think I saw one chandra in there. Most of the boxes were just commons/uncommons so I passed on that deal. On the bright side though I met up with another kid who had a small stack of about 100 cards he wanted to sell sold them to me for $10 when I got home I found 3 entomb in the stack.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the suggestions on pricing them out too it is good to see what others expect to pay for lots of cards.

Not sure if any of you guys have been following the continuing drama regarding Alex Bertoncini. Earlier in the year he won a SCG Open Tourney ($2000 prize) and this past weekend he won the StarCityGames Invitational ($10,000) as well as the SCG Player of the Year (a NM/N Power Nine set). However he has been caught on video several times breaking the game rules (drawing extra cards from Brainstorm, playing extra lands, putting cards into his hand instead of the graveyard) and there are many other reports of 'cheating', including from friends of his in the playing community, that aren't on video.

Many players have expressed outrage that SCG didn't refuse his entry into the Invitiational, and that they didn't place extra judging staff at his play tables during the Invitational, and are even more angry at the fact that he won the thing when he shouldn't have been allowed to play in their eyes. SCG has deferred responsibility to DCI in regards to any penalties, since DCI is the official sanctioning body for Magic tournaments and judges. According to a post today on SCG, there is an open investigation into Alex' actions that will be concluded soon and any appropriate actions will be taken.

The question, unfortunately, is will this decision be too late to prevent a habitual rule-breaker from getting away with one of the biggest prizes in professional-play MTG.

From what I understand, Alex is originally from the county where I currently live so there are a couple people at my LGS that know him personally and even they were saying that what he's doing is pretty messed up. As solely a casual player, I'm pretty neutral on the issue since I don't ever see myself playing Magic for big money. But, I would think that if you know this guy is suspected for being a cheater, the TOs at SCG would be mindful of the games that he's playing and watch him better. If he's willing to cheat in feature matches where he knows that he's being videoed, who knows what he does in games where he's off camera.

Damn Zoobernut, how do you keep walking into good deals like that? Didn't you pick up a bunch of cards on CL that had a playset of forces not too long ago?

As an aside, do you guys have certain preferences for basic lands? I'm just curious since a lot of the guys I play with try to run Zendikar lands for basics and try to use all of the same type. I thought it was kind of dumb at first, since I pretty much just use a stack of random foil basics from Urza's to Mercadian for my lands, but the idea of pimping out lands is starting to rub off on me.

Xerlic I spend a lot of time looking on craigslist and I jump on postings as soon as they are up. I also spend a lot of time looking and finding crap cards that people want big money for.

As for basic lands personally I like to stick to full art lands which are mostly zendikar lands though I like to have a balance of all 4 different arts if I can but lately I have been picking up unglued and unhinged lands when I can too so I can mix it up a bit. I have a decent amount of unglued lands now but the unhinged lands are super hard to get.

SCG could just put all of his matches in the feature match tables till he starts losing a lot of them. That way they can review the video and hand out punishment appropriately if he keeps it up. I've seen viewers of the streams tweet SCG during matches and tell them that something just happened that shouldn't have.

In my honest opinion though, he should get the lifetime ban like Mike Long did from DCI - and I don't think Mike Long had that many documented instances of purposely cheating but it's been years and I probably don't remember it properly.

I thought Mike Long's lifetime ban was for unsportsmanlike conduct (verbal abuse, threatening players and judges with physical violence, etc.).. He's essentially the Ty Cobb of MTG players and was well known for his shitty attitude.

Looks like Edgar Flores is now under scrutiny for drawing extra cards on the play. This was tweeted by Drew Levin http://twitter.com/#!/drew_levin/sta...41298945589248.

in his defense, he was probably better at Magic than Ty Cobb was at baseball. Long.dec might be the best and most consistent deck ever made in the history of magic.

of course, that sort of conduct is why competitive magic isn't fun sometimes...but I'd rather play against an honest asshole than someone who intentionally cheats the game.

Mike Long made the single greatest play in Magic history; I don't give a damn if he cheated before or after. The man sideboarded OUT his only win condition knowing he could make his opponent concede, in the World Championship finals!
