From a graveyard = the card is currently in the graveyard. You are casting from the graveyard, instead of from your hand.

You have to target a creature card.

You can't target a creature on the field, because the field is neither the graveyard nor your hand.

You still have to have the mana to cast it though, so it's not like you can run around hijacking someone's red or white bomb in your blue/black deck.

I didn't mean it in that way.

I was thinking the effect of the Lich's ability would persist on the creature regardless of whether it was in the graveyard or in play; once it could be cast from the graveyard, it would always be able to be cast from the graveyard (for the rest of that turn).

But that makes less sense the more I think about it. I'm guessing if you used Giant Growth on a Bear and the Bear still died, you couldn't reanimate it with its +3/+3 boost.

As soon as a card changes zones effects on that card go away and the card is "reset" to its default state. Unless of course the card text says otherwise (there are a couple of cards that keep counters on them through various zones). This is why if you reanimate a clone from the graveyard it comes back as a clone and you have to choose something for it to copy again. It won't remember what it used to be before it ended up in the graveyard. This is a totally nontechnical way of explaining it but I think it makes sense.

Yeah, that's what I figured. For some reason casting 'target creature card from a graveyard' rather than 'target creature card in a graveyard' made me think that the parameters for what made it a legal target were somehow different.

Interestingly enough this is why if you imprint an animated non-creature card onto a mimic vat each turn when you make a copy of it with the vat it is no longer a creature even though the vat only allows you to imprint creatures. For example a Gideon Jura that is animated to a 6/6 creature, if it then dies you can imprint it onto a mimic vat but then if you make a copy of it the next turn you get a regular non-creature Gideon with loyalty counters and all.

The cage is fucking beautiful.
And iirc unlike that deck search/shuffle killer, it's not on a body, so a bit harder to kill. R&D CAN LEARN!

Deadly Allure is also nice, wonderful combination.
Hellstrider should be good for it's price. Not overpowered, but a decent playable threat. Feed the Pack on the other hand, way to costly, and slow; it's only for vintage decks with the right fatpants critters to make it work.

The cage reminds me of oldschool sideboard cards from Tempest/Saga, I love it.

That thing is really good in legacy too.

I think Trinket Mage is going to be a strong card in a control deck 2 months from now. There are too many hosers you can get with it and give yourself a blocker against white.

That Hellrider card seems pretty good to me too, but red is weak.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best way to jump back into magic with over a decade out? I can spend about $300 to start. Would you guys recommend online or actual cards? I do have a store that does FNM about twenty minutes away.

I got back into it after a decade as well about a year and a half ago.

Online magic is NOT the way to go. Spend the $300 on a type 2 deck and play in drafts after that to get more cards.

Yar, if you want to try online magic, do NOT spend money on it (at least, not hundreds of dollars).
There are a couple tradebots that will give you 64 commons a month, gratis. If you wait a bit after release, you can also get a full playset of a sets commons for a few dollars on the secondhand market tradebots. You can then leverage that to play the pauper format.

You should only buy packs to draft with, and you should only draft if you a) know you're hot shit, or b) know you suck and can afford the price of practice.
