I would say sorry that your stores only see you as a cash cow, but I know that the store I go to is the exception to the rule when it comes to this stuff. The staff is excellent and they don't put up with gamers being ass hats, so its really chill. They also help out people with kickstarter stuff, and are willing to promote lesser known games. The name of Tue store is Dragon's Den if you live in or are visiting Richmond area I would recommended checking them out.
So I planned to get more then one box of MM but my LGS decided last minute to limit regulars to one box at the agreed cost then charge $250 for each additional box so I ended up getting just one which is more then most people so I should be thankful for just the one.
Spoiler: show
I did 2 drafts so far. First was R/B goblins that I went 1-2 due to massive misplays. I massively derped and forgot that you didn't actually have to suspend cards. IE they have a hard casting cost too! Fail.
Draft 2 was an easy 3-0 on the back of triple Moldervine Cloak and Bonesplitter. Oh and a Sword of Fire and Ice. I heard this card is pretty good. My final opponent drafted a UR deck also. I bet that helped the odds as well. Just a bit.
How would you rate some of the archtypes you played against Xerlic? U/B fae and U/R arcane seem like a traps to me unless you get one the big bombs in them. White seems like the most solid color to me with 3 of the most powerful limited uncommons(Path, Cloudgoat, Helix), good commons with evasion (Avian Changeling, Amrou Seekers).
So, 7 Goyfs were pulled at my LGS today in our Modern Masters Sealed(24 people) and 1 draft with two pods of 8.
At my lgs one of the guys I was drafting with pulled a foil Goyf from his box. Many curses were lobbed.
My buddy sitting next to me pulled 2 goyfs in his 6 pack sealed pool for the GPT today. He promptly dropped before having to pass the pool. I was pissed. I ended up with an Elspeth and a pact of negation in my pool so it wasn't terrible considering I paid $45 for the tournament.
Went 2-1 today with Junk rebels with a single mountain for sunbursting. Won every game except for affinity. Blightspeeker is pretty crazy in limited guy did on average 9 dmg a game and can search for things most common target was Avian Changeling. Cracked goyf, Elspeth, gifts ungiven and figure of destiny in prize packs.
LGS had 6 MM boxes at $300 each. Haha fuck that.
Here's what I thought from what I saw:
G/W Thallids is pretty strong. Especially if you get a Doubling Season. I didn't think too much about this archetype, but that's from Fallen Empires bias. Once the deck gets going, it's really hard to get through the horde of 1/1s without something like echoing truth and if you don't have fliers, racing becomes pretty impossible. Tromp the Domains is pretty much overrun for this deck.
R/W Giants seems to be an archetype that nobody wants to touch. I'm assuming it's cos there are pretty much no chase rares in this archetype so there's no initial first pick that puts someone into this deck? I saw one guy draft this deck and he won all of his games on the back of double thundercloud shaman.
I haven't seen U/B faeries, but I'd imagine this archetype would do pretty well especially if you get a scion or Oona herself (though she'll just outright win you the game if you get to untap with her regardless of the rest of your deck). I'd be taking Bonesplitters very highly if I was in this deck, but then again I'd take Bonesplitter highly either way lol. Card is really good.
A friend of mine pulled of the U/R arcane deck and almost 3-0'd his draft. He managed to get 4 Dampen Thoughts, 4 Glacial Rays, 2 Desperate Rituals, and a bunch of Reach Through Mists. In the games he won, they were over by turn 6 consistently. He lost in the finals due to bad draws. This type of deck doesn't mulligan very well obviously. You need to read the signals if you want to go into this archetype since I don't see a pod being able to support 2 of this deck.
G/B Dredge just seems like a pile of durdle. Someone tried to do the Worm Harvest + Tromp the Domains deck and he single handedly held up every single round. The games that he did win were decisive, but it looked like he did a whole lot of nothing in the games that he lost. We didn't have a timer going since our drafts were just casual among friends, but I think I played more EDH than draft matches during this particular draft.
U/G suspend/evoke is my favorite archetype. Other than Horobi's Whisper, Torrent of Stone and obv Path to Exile, most removal in this format seems to only deal with creatures with 2-3 toughness. A turn 3 Imperiosaur off of Search for Tomorrow is so hard to deal. Once you survive the early game and Giant Dustwasp, Errant Ephemeron and Riftwing Cloudskate (I love that this can bounce lands) come in, you pull so far ahead.
It isn't much of an archetype but I played B/W tokens and the deck was doing really well. I was throwing out tokens left and right with Marsh Flitter and that giant that makes kithkin soldiers and some other token generators. I also had a couple Avian Changlings to add to the mix.
Anyone here going to the Modern Masters Tourney in Vegas next weekend? So many people from my city are flying out. We're hitting it up on Monday, spending the week having a blast then finishing with the GP.
I bombed in my LGS' MM Draft. First pack I opened a Keiga, so I took that since he seems like a good bomb. I then tried to go into UR Storm due to the cards I was seeing but then they dried up. I should have changed in pack 2, but I didn't even think about it, especially since green was wide open in our table. The other 2 rares I opened were Squee and Greater Gargadon. The guy next to me pulled a foil Academy Ruins. I ended up going 1-2 drop with my 1 win being my round 1 Bye since our table had 7 players. I got foils of Empty the Warrens and Grapeshot though, so it wasn't a complete loss, but still more of a loss than I would have liked.
But I made up for it in Legacy. Decided to play Omniclash and went 4-0 without dropping a single game the entire night. My rounds were all over within 10-15mins.
Word on the official MTG forums is that Mutavault is in M14 core set at rare. Good to see it being reprinted so fast since it's omission from MMS was definitely a sad thing to see. It will be interesting for it to be standard legal again.
They're also saying Thoughtseize is in M14 now.
I got it from a thread on Salvation. It got moved to Speculation, so there's no real confirmation.
