i like the whole Greek/Roman/Mediterranean theme they've got going. It's pretty cool.

Purphoros is definitely not borderline playable lol. Thassa is pretty sweet, too.
Do you mean Purphoros isn't playable or definitely playable? I think he's sweet as fuck, but I don't know how sweet he is. I feel like turn 4 him into assemble the legion seems kinda cool, but probably magical xmasland.

100% playable. He's pretty busted even if you never turn him into a creature.

Just saw this. I don't typically like or play red/green but holy cow this sure does make me want to. He is reasonably costed, and his 0 ability is great. The +1 ability might be useful though in the past (garruk v.1) ramp on a planeswalker hasn't been the most relevant ability.

Play him on turn 3 and then ramp out a 6-7 drop on turn 4 sounds like a plan.

Can you imagine dropping him on Turn 4, and then using his +1 to drop Domri Rade!?

    Easily disruptable, but sounds fun!

So who is pre-releasing this weekend? I am going to the midnight pre-release tomorrow night. I am kinda nervous, it has been years since I stayed up all night (it runs from 12am - 6pm approx.) It should be fun though the set looks like it will be really cool in a sealed environment.

I'm like you Zoobernut in that I don't really do all nighters well ever since graduating college and working a big boy job for several years now. While I'm usually exhausted the next day, I always try to do the midnight prerelease since it's a lot of fun. I might just end up playing XIV until I pass out and just go tomorrow tho lol.

Haha well I am glad to hear another old fart like me can go to a midnight prerelease Xerlic. I think it will be a blast as long as I can keep busy I won't have time to realize how tired I am. I have a 1 and a half year old son though so even though I am staying up all night to play magic I won't get to sleep the rest of the day.

@Bane the beauty of prereleases is that they are designed to be casual easy going fun tournaments so it doesn't really matter if you get stomped. I have had both experiences of being stomped and doing the stomping and both times were really fun. Though if you are doing the stomping you do walk away with a bigger prize. I just love the chaos and unpredictability of opening fresh packs and building decks with them on the spot.

I went 3-1. I went blue and got Thassa and Master of Waves. My deck was pretty good as far as creatures. I had several fliers and bestow guys in addition to my bombs. All of the emissaries and 2/2 cycle of bestow guys seem really strong. I won all of my games off of suiting up some irrelevant guy with a ton of auras and just smashing. Thassa worked really well in this regard by making my guys unblockable. The only bad side of my deck was no forms of interaction. I would have loved to have one or two Voyage's End.

The only match I lost was against someone running 3 of the green 3/2 guy that becomes unblockable.

Went white and ended up running a white/green deck with a splash of red. Pulled a foil Xenagos I was pretty stoked about that. Ended up going 3-2 and finished 11th out of 32. One of those rounds was a stupid loss and I should have won which makes me mad because I wanted to make top 8. I don't think I did too bad though considering I haven't played magic at all in about 4 months.

Ended up 4-1-1 and got 6th/55 people. 13 packs woohoo!

Picked Blue and played UG, Shipbreaker Kraken is sick nasty good. Played some ramp with Caryatid and Opaline Horses, some nice bounce spells and copied them with the blue human guy. Putting two creatures on top of their library for seven at instant speed isnt bad at all. Only loss i got mill'd out both games by Ashiok and that stupid Centaur with 4 mill. Tied last game to get into top 8. Pulled a Thoughtseize which saved my tourney value, rest of the rares were poo.

I don't remember my score, just that I was 12th out of 18. I won my last game against the owner's little kid, who got dead last. He was trying to run three colors and had a full size deck, but he still gave me a good fight. Only one of our three games was really one sided.

I got some good pulls. I went White, and ran White/Blue, because I got Medomai the Ageless and Daxos of Meletis... neither of which made it onto the battlefield. I got stomped around a few times due to mana, etc, but i managed to put up a good fight at least once a round. I made good use of the Trojan Horse and the Phalanx Leader's Heroic.

We went to a new (to us) game shop a few towns over than usual. The owner was talking with us and he said that no matter what you're always supposed to get two boosters for buying into the prerelease. If that's true I'm not going to be buying from the more local store we went to previous times; some of the people who played didn't get any packs (beyond the prerelease deckbuilding stuff) and most only got 1-2... with fewer people than the new store had. This guy made sure everyone got 3, even though it meant 1st place had to wait a while for their prize box. Everyone agreed that was cool. Also, the new place wasn't as stuffy and had a generally more relaxed, informal atmosphere, even though the owner went through more formality with the rules. He wouldn't allow bags in the store, had us mark down what we pulled, etc. But the people were nicer, more forgiving, more helpful, more social, and more varied. It was more fun. So we're probably going to go back there for any future pre-releases or other events.

So, what do you guys think. My friend was playing against a guy, and my friend was oh so very dead, as long as his opponent didn't bumble something. My friend bestowed his only dude and battled, then passed. His opponent untapped, looked at his board of the kraken promo and a 5/4. He tapped all but 1 mana, monstrositied the kraken, didn't say or make any motion of any kind indicating he was tapping my friends creature down with the trigger. So my friend goes to 2 or something, untaps everything and his opponent was like, that doesn't untap. Now, I can see both sides of the argument both ways. The monstrosity trigger says "up to 4 creatures" meaning that 0-4 creatures. He didn't point, announce or make any visual indication that he was targetting anything. He just tapped, said "monstrous" and swung. What are your guys's thoughts?

I don't think the level of rule enforcment is supposed to be very strict in a pre-release, had it been a more competetive setting, like GP or PTQ that would be a missed trigger for sure.

I think the level of punishment is what changes. In that case I would either rewind the game until you get to the point where the trigger was missed, if the game hasn't progressed too far and had too many things happen. If the game progressed too far to rewind to the missed trigger then you tell the person sorry but you missed your trigger. Don't miss it next time. A prerelease is a casual tournament at a regular REL but it is still a tournament with some decent prizes on the line. I don't expect people to cut me too much slack on the rules in those situations and I don't cut people too much slack.

Before the tournament, they explained missed triggers. If you miss a trigger, then you missed a trigger. I think they enforce the miss trigger rule a little stricter here.

I definitely would've told the person they were SOL. What ended up happening?

Well, my friend was very dead if the opponent had targetted with his ability, but my friends opponent was also dead if he didn't target. So my friend untapped, the conversation happened, and his opponent died. His opponent was upset (I do not blame him 1 bit), and eventually was just like "yeah whatever, I kinda figured you'd be one of 'those' guys with us newer player." PS the guy had been playing for over 3 years, although pretty casual. There was no mizing involved or anything. I've always told my friends, don't concede until your opponent actually kills you. He was hoping for some kind of mistake, and it happened.

This is a strategic card game. There are rules to be followed and you shouldn't have to be carried through a game if you are, for the most part, familiar with the game. If I had missed a trigger, I would not fault my opponent for not letting me have it. I messed up, I should have been paying more attention to my cards.
